Academic Program:
Undergraduate Minor in Asian American Studies
The UIUC Asian American Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary minor. This minor will provide an excellent opportunity for interested students to acquire a multicultural understanding of the U.S. and provide a context for students who want to continue their studies in a professional school graduate program, work in the fields of education, politics, or community relations or broaden their horizons beyond a specific discipline for personal enhancement and development. The minor will offer students an opportunity to study a coherent multidisciplinary program in Asian American Studies. Minor Requirements:
The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will certify that a student has completed the program for the Minor upon recommendation by the Director of the Asian American Studies Program. An advisor will approve a student's course program and monitor the student's progress in meeting course requirements. A student’s plan of courses for the minor must be approved by the Asian American Studies Program. A minimum grade point average of 2.75 is required for completion of courses taken in this program. The minor requires 21 hours of courses selected from each of the following categories. No course may be used to satisfy more that one requirement. Only two courses at the 100-level may be credited for the minor.

For Asian American Students, Science Success Bears A Cost
By Myrna E. Watanabe Editor's Note: This is the first of a two-part series on Asian Americans in academic science. It addresses issues concerning Asian American students. The second part, to appear in the May 29 issue, will examine the representation of Asian Americans on academic faculties and in university administration. A growing number of government and private programs throughout the United States are aimed at increasing the ranks of underrepresented minorities in university science classrooms. But one minority groupthose of Asian ancestry- -is commonly perceived to be disproportionately represented in academia compared to the general population.
MAKING IT BIG: Founder Chang Yi Want, center, talks with United Biomedical staff. Statistics from the National Science Foundation and other governmental and professional organizations seem to confirm this perception. Anecdotal evidence obtained by The Scientist through interviews and correspondence over the Internet also point toward a substantial Asian representation in the academic student body. For Asian Americans, this heightened presence can be a double-edged sword. While Asians on campus may be ubiquitous, Asian Americans and others report, they are far from completely accepted. In academia, they say, the slights, slurs, and discriminatory practices tend to be more subtle, but are there just the same.

Asian American IU Alumnus Returns to Head COAS
by Julia Goh            When Indiana University offered Kumble R. Subbaswamy the job of heading its College of Arts and Sciences, he literally jumped at the proposal.   This IU alumnus believes that his appointment as COAS dean is a chance to “pay back” to the school where he earned his doctorate in physics in 1976.            “IU is a special place for me as I got all my breaks here,” explains Subbaswamy, who left Bangalore in southern India in 1971 to join the university on a graduate fellowship.   Undoubtedly, this father of two young children, a girl, 11, and a boy, 5, views his return to Bloomington as both a professional and a personal boon.  “I had a great experience, a great education, and it’s a beautiful campus. This is a labor of love for me.”            Not surprisingly, Subbaswamy has had a busy induction.   With 5,800 undergraduate majors and 3,000 graduate students, COAS offers more than 50 baccalaureate majors and nearly 40 doctoral programs.   In fact, “never a dull moment” is how he describes his initial campus experience.

Students taking course work in Asian American Studies can expect to gain an appreciation for the diversity and complexities of this segment of American society and can be expected to be able to apply their knowledge to issues in the social sciences, humanities, education, business, and other related fields. Many Asian American Studies courses are approved for G.E. credit. THE MINOR The Asian American Studies minor is a multidisciplinary program designed to provide students with a basic analysis of the literary, artistic, economic, social, political, and historical experience of Asians in America. This 24-unit minor is designed to provide students with a focused study of the fastest growing ethnic community in America. This minor is particularly relevant to students interested in education, health and human services, leisure studies, marketing, personnel management, international business, journalism, public administration, linguistics, the humanities, and the social and behavioral sciences. The Asian American Studies minor will be an important academic adjunct to those interested in working and interacting with communities and cultures from the Pacific Rim.

February 2
After many attempts in previous years to bring an Asian American advisor to NU, the Asian American Advisory Board - for the first time - submits a proposal for an Asian American Studies program, asking for five professors and one director to be hired. February 14
University President Henry Bienen rejects all points of the proposal. February 23
Then-Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Lawrence B. Dumas, refuses to commit to hiring new faculty for Asian American Studies, but acknowledges the students' need for action, saying: "Your proposal makes clear that there is a demand." March 29
The AAAB goes public with its protest, holding a press conference in which members express their dissatisfaction with the University's rejection of the proposal. April 7
The AAAB compromises with the NU administration, asking for just two new professors and one director for an Asian American Studies program.
