MODULE DESCRIPTIONS 2002-2003 Teaching Staff Recent Visitors AS3213 American Law Modules Offered Web Resources Semester 1 Dr Chng Huang Hoon Preclusions: FAQs Modular Credit: This module introduces students to an aspect of American law that concentrates on the issue of sex/gender discrimination. Through a discussion of various contemporary issues, from the point of view of judicial decisions and opinions (in other words, court decisions), it is hoped that students will gain an understanding of the complex interaction between language, gender issues, law’s power, American socio-cultural assumptions and politics as well as ideology. Issues to be discussed include abortion rights, pornography, gay rights and sexual harassment, among others.
Top AS3230 American Business: From Industrial Revolution to the Web Semester 1 A/P Ian Gordon Preclusions: Modular Credit: This module examines the place of business and technology in American culture. Beginning with the transformation of the American economy during the Civil War (1861-1865) students will examine changes in manufacturing systems, the development of corporations and big businesses, the growth of the national and international markets, the invention and marketing of new products, brand names, and advertising. The module asks students to consider whether companies such as Coca-Cola and Microsoft encapsulate American values, or whether they are transnational, and untypical of U.S. values

    Asian American Studies
The Asian American Studies major provides students with the opportunity to explore, discover, and discuss findings, interpretations, and actual life experiences. Issues studied include identity, immigration, diaspora, transnational relations, psychology, inter-ethnic relations, literature and popular culture.
    Undergraduate research and special studies
The Asian American Studies major program is also connected to the Center for Asian Pacific America. The center is intended to provide an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Asian and Pacific American issues. The University Honors Program offers lower-division courses taught by distinguished faculty and introduces undergraduates to the challenges and rewards of scholarship and research from the beginning of their undergraduate careers. In the upper division, the program invites outstanding students to design and produce honors theses and projects under individual faculty supervision. Through the departmental Honors Program, highly qualified students are invited to conduct a research thesis of their own initiative and design in collaboration with a faculty member. Participation in the Honors Program is the capstone of an excellent education.

African American Studies takes an interdisciplinary approach to the historical, social and political behavior, as well as the economic experience of Afro-Americans and people of African descent throughout the world. The program teaches the history of Afro-Americans and Africans with respect to similarities, distinctions and interaction between peoples of European and of African descent in America. Through a commitment to the functions of teaching, research, and community service, the program serves to prepare the student for career opportunities in the social and behavioral sciences as well as in the arts and humanities.
