The rich textile tradition of Central Asia encompasses several; distinctive groups of silk embroideries. Best known are the large-scale ceremonial hangings and covers worked in the urban centers of Uzbekistan and Tadjikistan, with their derivative floral repertoire. In a more rural context, however, the women of the Uzbek Lakai and Kungrat tribes have, for at least a century, embroidered small non-functional bags and hangings which, with their archaic "animal Style" imagery, carry an echo of Inner Asia's long shamanistic past.

My dad studied around the world, learned ten languages and could speak in any of those languages without an accent." Huvishka reminisces, "He was always a very classy dresser, a ladies man. Even in Italy, he always had the nicest suits, every single day he had the button-down shirt and slacks. Just a classy guy with a sense of humor. He always had these stories. He would tell me about putting spiders in the underwear drawers in the girl's dorms." Dr. Mustamandy was far more than a classy renaissance man. He was the pre-eminent Afghan archaeologist who spearheaded a decades long series of excavations that shed light on a vast range of Central Asian culture and history.

Photos courtesy of Huvishka Mustamandy "A museum's archaeological artifacts," he says, "aren't just a repository for scholars and specialists. Museums are storehouses of a people's cultural heritage. They give its people a sense of dignity, and express that its history and traditions are valued. Obviously, Afghanistan needs humanitarian aid...food, medicine, and rebuilding of the infrastructure. But alongside material aid, a museum preserving their cultural heritage provides humanitarian aid in the sense of helping to restore the human dignity of a war-torn people. " I asked if Afghanistan deserved to reclaim its lost heritage.

SELF-ARCHAEOLOGY I sometimes wonder if I'm a total narcissist. After all, don't I write on a website and by some delusion of grandeur someone actually visits and I get that little thrill from checking my traffic stats. Vanity, thy name is Min Jung. I remember reading the diary of Anne Frank when I was nine or so, finding it fascinating and curious that a young girl's diary should become so widely read, so carefully written, and so poignant in it's clear, simple honesty. And then I started my own foolish diary, with hopes that should I by some accident become famous, it might prove interesting as a dissertation on my life, thoughts, and silliness. Perhaps I'd be posthumously researched and someone would find my first diaries in purple spiral notebooks, scraps of paper, and scribbles. For this I thought I might bother to improve my otherwise deplorable penmanship. I won't bore you with excerpts from the older entries, but I find it fascinating digging through those old memories, carefully, or carelessly scrawled in over a dozen notebooks now. The most regular rants started to occur after I discovered my fascination with boys. Previous entries involve fighting with my brother, petty school details and stress, and how many little things there were that my mother did to either infuriate me, or break my heart.
