Permanent Collection
: Asian Art Asian art has long had a place among the Carlos Museum's collections, but the pace of this collecting activity has accelerated greatly in recent years, highlighted in the gallery's first installation, The Arts of India and the Himalayas: Recent Acquisitions . A schedule of long-term, rotating exhibitions is planned for the new gallery. Aided principally by the Nathan Rubin-Ida Ladd Family Foundation, the Museum has acquired works of Asian art with a special interest in South Asia, the focus of the gallery's inaugural installation. Featured works include a majestic late 1st-early 2nd century seated Buddha from Mathura in India, one of the most important such works in an American museum, and an 11th-12th century high relief sculpture of a rare, cosmic form of eighteen-armed Vishnu with numerous swaying attendants, a stunning example of the elegance and sophistication of Indian medieval sculpture. Some of the finest bronze sculptures ever created were produced by artisans working under the Chola Dynasty of South India between the ninth and thirteenth centuries; such as a sophisticated dancing Krishna from late in this period. Asian art Artist unknown Japan, Kamakura period Prince Shotoku praying to the Buddha c.1300 Works of Asian art in the national collection range from Neolithic and early Metal Age ceramics from Iran, Japan, Thailand and China, to installations created in the 1990s by Thailand's Montien Boonma and Yukinori Yanagi from Japan.
One of the strengths of the collection is Hindu and Buddhist sculpture, which includes Japanese lacquered wooden and plaster images, stone works from south Asia, and lost-wax cast bronzes of India and Southeast Asia. Significant Hindu sculpture is also a feature and includes the great stone Vishnu from the Pala dynasty of Bangladesh, the charming bronze elephant-headed god, Ganesha, and the dynamic dancing figure of the god Shiva from the great bronze artists of the southern Indian Chola dynasty. Other features of the Asian art collection are: a spectacular array of Southeast Asian textiles; a range of miniature paintings from India originally intended as illustrations for albums and manuscripts; a significant collection of ukiyo-e prints from the Edo and early Meiji periods of Japan; and a rare collection of 20th century Chinese woodcuts. The great interest aroused in things "Oriental" by the displays at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876 led to some of the first purchases for the newly established Museum: lacquerware, furniture, ceramics and other decorative arts from the Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Moroccan, and Persian exhibitors. The Centennial also provided a second group of Japanese ceramics through a later bequest of General Hector Tyndale, one of the jurors at the exhibition and a manufacturer of porcelain in Philadelphia. These early holdings of Asian art were supplemented by important Chinese ceramics given by Mrs. Bloomfield Moore in the late nineteenth century.

Featuring the Haku Maki Gala. Perhaps the largest selection of original Haku Maki prints available online. Introduction Festive Wine Available Works Ichiban Antiques started as an obsessive collection of Japanese woodblock prints and Japanese Festival dolls some nine years ago. Like so many dealers, our collection continued to grow in number and volume until such time as we were faced with buying a larger home or parting with some of our beloved treasures. Thus, in 1992, Ichiban was born and we have been both buying and selling ever since. Since then we have moved away from dolls – but have greatly expanded our range of Asian antiques to many centuries and most Asian countries. All items are described as honestly and fully as we know how from our research and experience. If there is any item shown for which you would like another photo, please give us a call or drop an e-mail and we can take a digital photo and send it to you. Normally, this can be done quite quickly. Of course, if we are out of town on a buying trip it will take a bit longer. If you do not have the capability of reading jpg

The most extraordinary collection of Tibetan art in the Western Hemisphere is on view in eight permanent galleries, the centerpiece of which is a Buddhist Altar consecrated in 1990 by His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. The Newark Museum's collection of Tibetan art has its origins in a remarkable group of items brought from the Sino-Tibetan borderland in 1911 by Dr. Albert L. Shelton, a medical missionary, with additional objects collected between 1914 and 1920. The Museum also acquired three other missionary collections from northeastern Tibet, significantly enriching its holdings in ethnographic and ceremonial art. Paintings, sculpture, ritual objects, dance masks, tents, saddles, headdress and weapons are among the featured objects.
