    Dear Friends,
These days, the Museum is embarking on a project that will become the next milestone in its history: the expansion of its Asian galleries. On April 30, a groundbreaking ceremony formally announced the Museum’s plans to renovate and expand the Asian art galleries. Museum Trustees, including Kenny Wilson, Emory Hamilton, and Dr. Ronald Calgaard, joined the energetic leaders of the project, Curator of Asian Art Martha Blackwelder and Peggy P. Mays, Museum Trustee and Chair of the Asian Wing Expansion Project, in presenting the expansion plans to members of the community and the media. The event also provided the opportunity to announce, for the very first time, the name of the new Asian galleries: the Lenora and Walter F. Brown Asian Art Wing.
Lenora and Walter Brown have been loyal and generous supporters of the San Antonio Museum of Art for many years. Whether providing their time and leadership as Trustees (Lenora is also a past Chairman of the Museum’s Board of Trustees) or sharing their love of Asian art (both are enthusiastic collectors), the Browns have long been committed to the Museum. Indeed, the Asian art works generously donated by the Browns through the years form the core of the Museum’s Asian art collection. Their recent commitment to donate additional works was a major impetus to move ahead with plans to expand the existing Asian art galleries.
The Museum has raised more than $6 million and is now in the final phase of fundraising for the Lenora and Walter F. Brown Asian Art Wing. We are encouraged by the support we are receiving from the community. As additional donations of Asian art continue to come in from patrons and collectors, the Museum is closer to establishing itself on a new, more prestigious level among U.S. museums. When the Lenora and Walter F. Brown Asian Art Wing opens, the Museum will be one of the largest centers for Asian art in the Southwest.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION: True definition of Asian art may be long in the making
By EDAN CORKILL, Special to The Asahi Shimbun Think about ``Asian art'' and what comes to mind? Traditional handcrafts? Ink paintings on scrolls? Or perhaps the more contemporary, chaotic free-for-all installations of Surasi Kusolwong? Ready for a surprise? Well, whatever it is that constitutes ``Asian art'' for you, chances are it can be traced back to the West. In fact, most of the things we know about Asian art, we know because a Western curator, critic or historian decided at some point in time that we ought to know about it. Recent phenomena like Kusolwong are no exception. However, over the last five to 10 years there has been a push throughout the region for Asians to take back control of their artistic destinies. In Japan, institutions such as Fukuoka's Asian Art Museum and the Japan Foundation's Asia Center have been at the forefront of this movement, not only organizing exhibitions, but educating a generation of Asian scholars to curate the art of their own region.
