Hate Crimes as a Result of September 11th
As many of us begin to recoup from the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, we are forced to deal with an array of emotions:
confusion, fear, frustration and anger. And as we seek different sources to help us cope with these emotions and tragedy, unfortunately, there are some who resort to physical aggression and violence.
While much of this violence has been targeted towards Arab Americans, there have been incidents that have involved Indian Americans. While many of these incidents go unreported, to date, the
following incidents have been forwarded to the Indian American Center for Political Awareness (IACPA) or have appeared in news reports:
Amrik Singh Chawla, a Sikh American was chased four blocks by three white males yelling "terrorist" near Broadway and 52nd Street, New York City. (9/11/01)
Rippy Singh was stopped by 4 white males in a car who accused him of being a terrorist and said, "we will bomb you" in Washington, DC.

India Profile, 2001-2002 for LCCAP The following tables detail the subject areas of materials and languages which the Library of Congress collects in South Asia. If the Column(s) to the right of the subject has an x in the box, this means Penn will be acquiring materials this year in that subject. The column CRS stands for Comprehensive, Representative, or Selective and represent subjects which are then further broken down by the amount of material which we have decided to acquire from LC.
  • Selective: Includes most authoritative and scholarly books on all subjects, published by the major commercial and institutional publishers, or by the most important authors in the different literatures.
  • Representative: The next layer down the scale of scholarship. Books that are less than basic but still needed to support academic research.
  • Comprehensive: Includes books which are too specialized or narrowly focused to be of interest to other than the major academic collections. Includes books with less than impressive scholarly apparatus, books by lesser known authors, or by minor publishers.

It actually, among other things, gives us a night-time picture of Asia, showing which parts are well-lit and which are not. There are two reasons for darkness in the landmass. Either you have the absence of people, as in the Baloch and Afghan deserts and the Tibetan plateau. Or you have poverty—no power, no lights. The difference between South Korea’s dazzling lights (next to even more dazzling Japan) and, up across the 38th parallel, the abject darkness of North Korea, is an indication of the misery of people in that dark nation. The same holds true for Burma. And Nepal, where other than the dot that shows Kathmandu, there is precious little to show for its 23 million people.

A rejuvenated museum of Asian Art
THE Guimet Museum, the largest and most important repository of Asian art in France, was not always considered a pleasure to visit. Renowned for the finest collection of Cambodian (Khmer) art in the West, it was dimly lit and overcrowded with pieces. Barring the specialist and avid museumgoer, visitors rarely left satisfied. This, surprisingly, for a country where museums of all kinds, shapes and periods abound - museums devoted to art movements, painters and sculptors; archaeological, naval or historical museums; museums for toys and small trains, combs, cutlery, harnesses and shoes, not to speak of bread, egg, chocolate and even museums of the pear and the apple. Museology is a highly developed field in France and the public has been trained from a young age to visit museums, pay expensive entrance charges and learn to appreciate works of art. The State and the regional councils systematically subsidise the museums of their areas. It was, therefore, ironical that the Guimet Museum, that prides itself on being if not as rich as the British Museum, then certainly the most balanced when it comes to Asian Art, remained neglected for so long. It was only five years back that the Guimet was closed down and given a compete overhaul. The renovated Museum opened its doors again a few weeks ago and the results of this overhaul are there for all to see. The interiors have been completely remodelled, new galleries added, exhibits well lit and the various collections housed more logically. Visitors just don't seem to stop pouring in. Almost 3000 visitors a day with a high of 5000 and lines of over 200 people - tourists and ordinary Parisians alike - waiting to enter the premises at virtually all hours of the day. Naturally, the extensive press coverage, by and large laudatory, has also helped. But the public has undergone a transformation. No more the traveller, collector or connoisseur of yesteryear but a public more difficult to classify, the general public.
