The Game
This is a spicy clone of the good old Asteroids. This one is on anabolic steroids though. It's not just a simple hack. The whole application is designed by strictly applying object-oriented methods. This is in fact a testing ground for a very versatile, simple abstract core which can be used in any 2D vector graphics game or application. Asteroids96 will choke your machine if you don't run on a P-75 or higher. On a P-133 you should get about 20 frames per second when the screen starts getting busy. Instructions
Shoot everything you see and grab the supply boxes that fly around. You can press several keys at once but the game will only react every 1/10 of a second. The status bars at the bottom of the screen indicates how much of each resource your ship has left. Last notice
This game has almost two years on it's neck but it still stands up against new fresh Java games. Due to the (surprisingly) overwhelming popularity of Asteroids96 we have decided to dust off the old code and update it. We have added sound effects which add to the downloading time. There is now also a high score server running. Compete against other webbers and get immortalized in the hall of fame! 23. SpaceGame - A Simple, Networked Multiplayer Game
A simple, networked multiplayer game for Java similar to asteroids.

SpaceGame
A Simple, Networked Multiplayer Game
Game Description
This game is primarily written to be run as a Java application. You may, however, also run it as an applet. If my server is currently running, you may play the applet version with a couple of friends right now. This is a simple game for multiple players. It reminds a bit about the good, old Asteroids arcade game, but there are no asteroids here. Instead, there are other space ships, controlled by other players. This game is useless for you if you either a) don't have any friends, or b) don't have access to a computer network (modems may be too slow). You may be able to find additional reasons for it's uselessness. In your window, you see only a part of the world. Your ship stays centered in the view all the time. In the lower right corner is a radar display showing the entire world. A gray rectangle marks the area of the world you currently have in your window. Enemy ships appear in the radar as green dots, while weapons left by dying enemies are shown as red dots. You ship's status is shown in the lower left corner. A ship damage meter shows how far you are from being blown completely away. If this meter goes high, you should bail out of any battle you attend to, and spend some time on you own. The ship will then slowly repair itself. There is also a bomb count in the lower left corner, along with a phaser temperature meter.

24. 1) What Are Comets And Asteroids ?
1998 Feb 24. Back to NEAT home page. 1) What are comets and asteroids ? 2)What do we know of comets and asteroids impacting Earth in the past ?
http://neat.jpl.nasa.gov/neofaq.html
Questions and Answers regarding Near-Earth Asteroids. David Rabinowitz,on behalf of the JPL Near Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) team. 1998 Feb 24 Back to NEAT home page
1) What are comets and asteroids ?
Comets and asteroids are small planets, ranging in size from baseball-sized meteors to 1/3 the size of the moon. They are the rocky and icy bodies left over from the formation of the solar system. Originally, the population was much larger. With time, however, most of these bodies have either collided together to form the major planets, were ejected from the inner solar system into the Oort cloud, or were ejected out of the solar system altogether. The comets and asteroids we see today are the residual population.
2) What do we know of comets and asteroids impacting Earth in the past ?
The Earth, and all the other planets in the solar system, have been continuously pelted by asteroids and comets ever since their formation. Just look at the moon through a small telescope or a good pair of binoculars. The surface is covered by craters that were created by impacting asteroids and comets. Similar craters have been observed on the surface of the Earth. One of the most spectacular is a ~1/2-mile- wide crater near Flagstaff, Arizona. If it weren't for the effects of erosion, and the cover of the oceans, the surface of the Earth would look much like the Moon or Mars. It is now known that an asteroid impact caused at least one mass extinction of life on Earth the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. The remnant of the resulting crater lies off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, mostly buried by ocean sediments.

Flashteroids Version 1.2
. This is the second fully featured release, complete with "arcade" mode and an online hall of fame. Once in the game, you'll find a feedback page, so please send any comments or ideas you have for future versions.
Inspiration - Many thanks to James Shaughnessy, creator of Gravitation (Playstation) for the inspiration behind this game.
How to play
You control your ship using the arrow keys on your keyboard. Use up or down to thrust, left to rotate anti-clockwise and right to rotate clockwise. Press control to fire. The objective of each level is to hit seven targets that appear in sequence, without colliding with any of the scenery, in as little time possible. The hard levels feature anti-aircraft guns and missile launchers just to make it a bit more taxing. If you run low on fuel, you can land back at your base to re-fuel. Whilst on the base you have a shield to protect you from any incoming fire.
System Requirements and Troubleshooting
To play Flashteroids , you need macromedia flash player (version 5 or later) installed in your web browser. This comes pre-installed on many computers so it's likely that you already have it. Flashteroids will tell you if you don't. If you need to install flash player

(has many faces)
Chiron is a major key to understanding, not only our solar system (in astronomy), but healing and wholemaking (in astrology.) It was discovered in 1977, and was so different from anything else ever found that a whole new category had to be invented for it. When Chiron was discovered to have company, in the early 1990's, this new category was given a name: The Centaurs. And these other bodies, too, are proving of major significance. First to be discovered was the body they named PHOLUS, next came NESSUS, ASBOLUS, CHARIKLO and HYLONOME. There are several more that have not as yet been named. I do not think that we can get a complete picture of who we are, or how to heal, unless we include these bodies as well. My name is Zane B. Stein, and I began studying Chiron only weeks after its discovery. These are my pages dedicated to Chiron and Friends. I hope that they open doors for you, the way Chiron has for me. SARS may spread by air

from: Robert Bast ... Sunday, March 30, 2003 "Fears of a global health nightmare intensified yesterday amid concerns expressed by U.S. officials that the deadly new SARS contagion may be airborne. Dr. Julie Gerberding, head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, said the major mode of transmission still is through droplets, which spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes. "But we are concerned about the possibility of airborne transmission across broader areas and also the possibility that objects that become contaminated in the environment could serve as modes of spread," Gerberding said. " It is thought to be a relative of the common cold, and therefore there is no cure. More at the

WHAT IS A PHA? P otentially H azardous A steroids (PHAs) are currently defined based on parameters that measure the asteroid's potential to make threatening close approaches to the Earth. Specifically, all asteroids with an Earth M inimum O rbit I ntersection D istance ( MOID ) of 0.05 AU or less and an absolute magnitude (H) of 22.0 or less are considered PHAs. In other words, asteroids that can't get any closer to the Earth ( i.e. MOID) than 0.05 AU (roughly 7,480,000 km or 4,650,000 mi) or are smaller than about 150 m (500 ft) in diameter ( i.e. H = 22.0 with assumed albedo of 13%) are not considered PHAs. There are currently 501 known PHAs. This ``potential'' to make close Earth approaches does not mean a PHA will impact the Earth. It only means there is a possibility for such a threat. By monitoring these PHAs and updating their orbits as new observations become available, we can better predict the close-approach statistics and thus their Earth-impact threat.
