A threat to our early ancestors?
By BBC News Online science editor Dr David Whitehouse Impacts by asteroids may have affected the course of human evolution, according to two researchers studying how often the Earth has been struck in the past. They say that rather than gradual and uninterrupted human evolution, the ascent of mankind could have been influenced by frequent cosmic catastrophes.
It is sobering to realise that we are alive due to cosmic luck rather than our genetic make-up
Dr Benny Peiser, John Moores University, UK Their work, they say, explains one of the biggest problems that has puzzled researchers for generations: why almost all human-like creatures or hominids, have become extinct during the past five million years. According to traditional theories of evolution, our early ancestors were slowly and gradually replaced because they failed to compete with other human species that had superior "fitness". But according to Dr Benny Peiser, a social anthropologist at John Moores University in Liverpool, UK, and Michael Paine, an impact researcher from the Planetary Society in Australia, the most likely cause of hominid extinctions may be more than 20 globally devastating catastrophes that occurred over the last five million years.

Asteroids are rocky fragments left over from the formation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. Most of these fragments of ancient space rubble - sometimes referred to by scientists as minor planets - can be found orbiting the Sun in a belt between Mars and Jupiter . This region in our solar system, called the Asteroid Belt or Main Belt, probably contains millions of asteroids ranging widely in size from Ceres, which at 940 km in diameter is about one-quarter the diameter of our Moon, to bodies that are less than 1 km across. There are more than 20,000 numbered asteroids. As asteroids revolve around the Sun in elliptical orbits, giant Jupiter’s gravity and occasional close encounters with Mars or with another asteroid change the asteroids’ orbits, knocking them out of the Main Belt and hurling them into space across the orbits of the planets. For example, Mars’ moons Phobos and Deimos may be captured asteroids. Scientists believe that stray asteroids or fragments of asteroids have slammed into Earth in the past, playing a major role both in altering the geological history of our planet and in the evolution of life on it. The extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago has been linked to a devastating impact near the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.

This website addresses the physics of Asteroids, Comets and Meteoroids as well as their unique characteristics and impact on society. Historically, space has fascinated scientists throughout the centuries. In 1923, scientists realized that millions of other galaxies made up the universe and that the universe covered a vast area larger than previously thought. Overtime, technological advances have enabled astronomers, scientists and researchers to uncover the hidden depths and structures that make up space. The following links to the left are intended to help students learn how physics applies to asteroids, comets and meteoroids. 4 NOV 1998 Credit the blasted-from-space movies Deep Impact and Armageddon. Or blame the one-day scare from March, 1998, when headlines warned that a beefy asteroid could zoom within 30,000 kilometers of Earth or even sledgehammer our tender green planet in 2028. Within a day, egg-bespattered astronomers used 1990 data to issue a revised estimate. It's safe to say that the asteroid will miss us by a good 600,000 kilometers about twice the distance of the moon. Still, the confluence of events has put The Why Files in an asteroidal frame of mind. Nobody knows the destruction that would result from a collision with one of these sub-planetary objects, but the evidence points to sudden, catastrophic and global damage. You could say it's pretty amazing that 1998 turned out to be a boom year for asteroids. Unlike planets, these misshapen agglomerations of rock and debris are not named for ancient gods. Instead they must answer to clunky handles like "1997 YF11" or "1998 ML14"). Asteroids are also far punier than planets: Ceres, the largest, is about 1,000 kilometers in diameter, but most are under a kilometer across. Most asteroids orbit between Mars and Jupiter, crashing into each other in a silent version of 3-D bumper cars that slowly grinds them to bits.

Backyard Astronomy Welcome To The Night Sky A Site For Backyard Astronomers formerly Barbara's Backyard Astronomy Page It's time to gear up for Mars exploration! There is an excellent article in the March issue of Astronomy Magazine. You owe it to yourself to get it. It tells all about the different phenomenon that you can see on the surface as well as what colored filters are likely to help you see what features. Mars will be closer this summer than it has for a long time or will be again. Begin getting to know the Red Planet now and you will be well versed when it comes close enough to really see. Mars is a morning object for now, rising after 2:30 am and setting by mid day. It is in the constellation Sagittarius very near the bright globular cluster M22. It will be low in the south for those of us north of the equator, more so the farther north you are. At brighter than magnitude one it should be the brightest thing in the area. Look for a very bright 'star' with a ruddy hue, but don't confuse it with Antares. Which will be dimmer and farther to the west in Scorpius. There is a chance for us amateurs to do some real science here. If you are really into observing Mars check out the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers at

Introduction
On a clear dark evening, if you look up at the stars and are patient, you may be lucky enough to see a brief trail of light dart across the sky - a "shooting star". These objects are the cause of much confusion amongst the casual observer; are they comets like the famous one discovered by Halley ? Are they meteors , popular subject of old disaster movies ? Or are they asteroids , bodies still more mysterious ? In fact, whilst all three have similar origins, they are very different objects. Comets, Asteroids and Meteorites are all examples of "space debris". They are remnants of the material left over from that period of time which saw the formation of the solar system.
Identifying space debris in the night sky
Before we look at these objects in more detail, it may be useful to describe the appearance of comets, asteroids and meteorites in the night sky, so that the visual difference is clearly understood and the observer will be in no doubt as to what they have seen !
Comets appear in our skies from time to time. They vary considerably in their brightness or

Introduction
In the early 1600's, the astronomer Johannes Kepler formulated laws which described the shape and size of the planetary orbits. However, these laws still did not describe why the planets in our solar system were found at precisely the distances from the Sun that we observe. However, in the latter half of the eighteenth century, the German astronomer Titius discovered a curious mathematical pattern: take a sequence of numbers 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, and so on, each number being twice the previous. Then add four to every number, and finally divide each by ten. The result is another series of numbers: 0.4, 0.7, 1.0, 1.6, 2.8, 5.2, and so on. This is a remarkable series, because these numbers correspond very closely with the distances of the planets from the Sun in astronomical units. Apart, that is, from the number 2.8. There was apparently a gap in between Mars and Jupiter where the series predicted there should be a planet, but where astronomers found none. Understandably, a search was begun for this "missing" planet, but to no avail. Then, on January 1st 1801 the Sicilian astronomer Guiseppe Piazzi discovered a "star" which moved from night to night - a clue that the object was not in fact a star, but belonged to the solar system. After studying its motion, it was found that this new object, named

Large asteroid impacts have nasty side effects, as any dinosaur could have told you were she not obliterated by one of these calamity combos 65 million years ago. The ground shakes. Fire arcs across the sky and beyond the horizon. Clouds of debris race around the planet and blot the Sun out for months. At least that's what theory tells us. Since the scenario has never played out in modern times, scientists don't really know exactly what will happen when the next space rock slams into Earth. One long-supposed incendiary side-effect is enhanced volcanic activity, which can make life pretty miserable for survivors who find themselves on or near the flanks of a newborn plume of molten rock. Some scientists suspect the Hawaiian Islands were born of an asteroid impact SCIENCE TUESDAY Visit SPACE.com to explore a new science feature each Tuesday. >>Go to Science Tuesday archive page

This fruit, considered to be the quince by Gnostics is the key to unraveling the secrets of the monuments of Mars: its scientific name is Pyrus Cydonia. Pyrus is the root for the word pyramid, pyre, pear, Paris, Peru, Persia, and Perseus. The original Hebrew text of the story of the fruit of knowledge calls it a pur. The name used by the Greeks for the planet Mars was Pirois. Cydonia is the name of the land of Sidon, a name that means, to lie in wait, to strike. It is spelled in Hebrew with a letter that symbolized a snake. Together the words pyrus and Cydonia represent two of the three figures of the first recorded transfer of knowledge of the mystery schools. The 3rd figure is Eve, the isha (Hebrew for wife) of Adam. In Greek Isa has the meaning "I know" according to Plutarch, and is the origin of the feminine deity of knowledge worshipped by members of the mystery schools the world over, Isis. In Egypt Isis's symbol was the five-pointed star, the shape of the greatest monument of Cydonia Mars. The remaining symbols found in the story of the fall of man and the transfer of secret knowledge can be found both on Cydonia Mars and the earth, the cherub, twins and the altar. The Cherub was set by God in Eden as guardian of the tree of eternal life. Its face is seen on Cydonia.
