When Earth is next hit by an asteroid, the impact may well be a double whammy, which might in turn be blamed on Earth itself.
Doppler radar images of binary asteroid 2000 DP107 show the smaller object's position on several days as it orbits the larger rock. CREDIT: J. L. Margot/Caltech/Arecibo A new study estimates that 16 percent of asteroids that roam the region of space shared by Earth's orbit are actually double asteroids, called binaries. And researchers say these pairs may have been created by the rending effect of Earth's gravity, thought to tear asteroids apart when they make close approaches to the planet. Other evidence shows that impacts on Earth sometimes involve a pair of craters. In research published today in the online version of the journal Science , astronomers say binary asteroids larger than 219 yards (200 meters) appear to be formed extremely close to Earth, within a few times the planet's radius. Five such systems have been spotted by radar telescopes. Asteroids this close to the planet are dubbed Near Earth Asteroids, or NEAs, and are watched closely by astronomers who fear they may one day hit Earth. The findings are based on radar observations made at NASA's 77-yard (70-meter) Goldstone tracking telescope in California and at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

The Asteroid Belt So far, the largest asteroid found in the asteroid belt is as big as the state of Texas. It has been named Ceres. An asteroid is a bit of rock. It can be thought of as what was "left over" after the Sun and all the planets were formed. Most of the asteroids in our solar system can be found orbiting the Sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. This area is sometimes called the "asteroid belt". Think about it this way: the asteroid belt is a big highway in a circle around the Sun. Think about the asteroids as cars on the highway. Sometimes, the asteroid cars run into one another. When this happens, the asteroids may break up into smaller asteroids. Scientists think that most asteroids are the result of collisions between larger rocky space bodies. Asteroids can be a few feet to several hundred miles wide. The belt probably contains at least 40,000 asteroids that are more than 0.5 miles across. If an asteroid is captured by the gravitational pull of a planet, the asteroid can be pulled out of the belt and go into orbit as a moon around the planet that pulled on it.

This game is as addictive as you remember it from the 80's... Give the applet a moment to load. Especially if this is your first time playing. (It will load faster once cached). Follow the on-screen directions. Destroy as many asteroids as you can while avoiding collision with them. Also watch for the flying saucers armed with guided missles. If you warp into hyperspace, your ship will momentarily disappear then reappear on another part of the screen, gradually fading in. During this time the ship is invunerable.

"DEEP IMPACT"
CAN IT REALLY HAPPEN?
BY JANE HOYT
INTRODUCTION
You are member of a group of consulting scientists appointed to evaluate the probability of an global catastrophe resulting from an asteroid impact on planet earth. To accomplish this evaluation you collect information and data.
YOUR MISSION
You will investigate the following:
  • What is an asteroid? Why does the moon look like swiss cheese?

  • Does the earth surface also resemble swiss cheese?
  • What protects the Earth from becoming like the moon? How do asteroids get pushed from their 'normal' orbits into Earth-crossing ones? Has there been any small or large asteroid collisions on Earth? When? Where? How does an asteroid collision affect the earth?
    What do the experts report?
Create a powerpoint presentation resulting from your investigation. Presentation must be at least 10 slides with text and images.
