Roughing it... The U.S. Space Camp at the in Huntsville, Alabama was inspired by Wernher von Braun's suggestion that there should be summer camps to promote science just as there are for sports. Begun in 1982, the yearly attendance has grown from several hundred to over 12000. The main technique is to immerse students into a space training experience. The students use simulators to train just as astronauts do. The simulators include physical trainers to simulate low gravity for example. Mission simulations include shuttle cabin and mission control simulators. As they carry out a space mission with various crisis and emergencies, the students not only learn the technical aspects of shuttle missions, but also how to work in a group to solve problems. ANNOUNCEMENT: MIR 2002 Zero Gravity Campaign for Art and Science Projects, Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre, Star City, Russia. Call for Proposals - DEADLINE CLOSED
March 18th 2001. The fragments of the MIR station splashed down in the South Pacific Ocean. March 19th 2001. A small group of international specialists in art, science and media decided in a meeting in Paris to found the MIR network, an intercultural initiative to explore space in the 21st century. The MIR founder members are: The Arts Catalyst (UK)
Leonardo/Olats (France/USA)
Projekt Atol (Slovenia)
V2 (Netherlands) Art and Space "The human race will not stay on Earth for ever, but in pursuit of light and space, will first tentatively break out of the Earth's atmosphere and will then conquer the entire solar system".
- Konstantin Tsyolkovsky When Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth in 1961, he became a hero of the Soviet nation. The space programme for the Soviet people was underpinned by the philosophical and artistic ideals of Russian cosmism expressed by Tsyolkovsky and Fyodorov, Khlebnikov and Malevich. The first landing of a man on the moon was engineered by the Americans in response to the Soviet's success, which came as a great shock to the West, and was broadcast to the world. The moon landing was seen as a singular moment in modern human history, marking the influence of mass media in modern life and the adjustment of Western utopian theories towards life in space. The MIR initiative would like to open up space facilities by matching artistic processes and scientific research to give a new impulse to space art and space research.

Gravity Zero: A Dancer in Weightlessness
All events, except 15 March: Lilian Baylis Theatre, Sadlers Wells, Rosebery Avenue, London EC1
15 March only: Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London W1 "From a physics point of view, weightlessness is exactly the same feeling as the beginning of a fall. In the space station, we start to "fall" as soon as the engine stops and we enter orbit, and we continue to fall until landing. Imagine you've jumped from a plane and before opening your parachute and hitting the ground, you have to do your job, sleep and get accustomed to these conditions."
- Sergei Krikalev, Russian cosmonaut
One of the most fascinating aspects of manned space flight is the state of zero gravity or weightlessness. This extraordinary 'by-product' of the space programme has long been recognised as a rich scientific resource, with a multitude of experiments queuing up for the space agencies' parabolic flight programmes and the International Space Station. But the art of zero gravity has barely been explored, in part due to the exclusiveness of this environment, accessible only to scientists and astronauts. In recent years a small handful of artists have been able to access this new space, to experiment with dance and art in weightlessness. The Arts Catalyst presents projects from this emerging genre from zero gravity flights it has organised for artists and scientists with the Russian and European space agencies.

    Main Simulating Facilities
    More than two dozens of integrated and specialized simulators and trainers are used presently at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Center for training cosmonauts within the framework of "Soyuz-TM" utilization program and International Space Station.
    The main simulators and trainers are:
  • TDK-7ST N1 and N2 integrated simulators used for training cosmonauts on "Soyuz-TM" space vehicle, its systems and hardware control in the course of the space mission program implementation in standard, off-nominal and emergency situations at all stages of the flight, as well as for mastering skills, how to follow and to handle the flight procedures;
  • "Don - 732" specialized simulator, which is used for a crew training on manual-mode control of the "Soyuz-TM" space vehicle and its systems in the course of approach and docking to the orbital station;
  • "Teleoperator" specialized simulator for mastering the approach remote-control skills, which main task is to train crews on manual control of the "Progress" cargo vehicle while doing approach, berthing and fly-around, docking to and undocking from the orbital station in the remote controlling mode in case of emergency and off-nominal situations;
  • Specialized simulator for training cosmonauts on the"Soyuz-TM" transport vehicle approach and docking to the long-term orbital station and for maintaining the crew skills on manual control of the transport space vehicle and its systems in the course of approach, rendezvous, fly-around, docking to/ undocking from the space complex, foreseen by the program of the flight;

    http://old.atlasaerospace.net/eng/tren.html
    NEW VERSION OF SITE >>> document.write(""); The "ATLAS Aerospace" company invites all the volunteers to pass a course of space training in the simulators of the Yuri Gagarin Russian State Scientific-Research and Test Center of Cosmonaut Training. You will acquire actual skills on a space vehicle control by means of unique hardware and facilities and learn a lot about the space vehicle's docking process. You also will be given fundamentals of space navigation.
    Depending on an amount of skills to be trained and on the amount of the simulated systems the simulators are classified as specialized and integrated ones.
    The specialized simulators are used for acquiring skills on carrying out single particular operations, such as approach and docking with other manned space vehicles, run of experiments and research, preparation for air-locking and exit from the manned space vehicle etc. Therefore, specialized simulators simulate operation of single independent systems and informational sources, which are used by cosmonauts for carrying out specific particular tasks.
    The integrated simulators are used for acquiring skills on carrying out the mission plan as a whole. All skills and knowledge, which have been previously mastered by means of specialized simulators and trainers, are integrated here. Integrated simulators enable to simulate and to train the whole program of the forthcoming mission and run of all systems, starting from the procedure of pre-launch preparation of the manned space vehicle and ending up with crew actions after touchdown. The staff of the Mission Control Center regularly participates in such training, thus enabling to improve its interaction with the crew. Therefore, integrated simulators have the greatest entirety of simulated systems of control.

    As the thirst for space exploration has evolved from shuttle flights to space stations, the opportunities seem endless for future endeavors. And Kyle Fairchild’s involvement and excitement of a new international space station could perhaps motivate others to feel the same. “Instead of weeks aboard a space shuttle, now we’re living there – four months at a time,” said Fairchild, a 1973 graduate of Princeton High School. “A space station is a destination, a home. Humankind will always be in space in the foreseeable future.” Fairchild has been living almost two years in Star City, Russia, where he’s been serving as deputy director of operations and member of the United States Diplomatic Corp. for the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. Since his stay, he’s been training three cosmonauts, Bill Shepherd of the U.S. and Russians Sergey Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko, who shuttled up for a four-month visit to the new international space station, known as Alpha, on Oct. 31.

    Space Shuttle Mission STS-84 aboard Atlantis will be the sixth of nine planned dockings of the Shuttle with the Russian Space Station Mir. It will include the transfer of the fifth U.S. astronaut to live and work on the Russian orbiting outpost. STS-84 Mission Specialist C. Michael Foale will join Mir 23 cosmonaut crew members, Commander Vasily Tsibliev and Flight Engineer Alexander Lazutkin, by replacing STS-81 mission specialist and Mir 23 crew member Jerry M. Linenger on Mir. Linenger has been on the Russian outpost since Jan. 15, shortly after Atlantis last docked with Mir during the STS-81 mission. Foale is scheduled to remain on Mir for slightly more than four months when he will be picked up by Atlantis in late September and returned to Earth. The primary objectives of STS-84 are the docking and exchange of U.S. astronaut crew members; the transfer of science equipment, Russian logistics and other supplies; and performance of joint experiments, including Risk Mitigation Experiments in support of Phase 1 of the International Space Station. The 84th Space Shuttle launch and 19th flight of Atlantis (OV-104) will begin with liftoff from Pad A, Launch Complex 39. Atlantis will ascend at a 51.6-degree inclination to the equator for direct insertion to a 184-statute-mile (160-nautical-mile/296-kilometer) orbit. Atlantis is expected to rendezvous and dock with Mir at an altitude of 213 nautical miles on Flight Day 3, and remain docked for five days.
