DEFENSE AGAINST INFECTION; A CONSTANT TASK.
INFLUENZA-TYPE INFECTIONS IN WINTER.
The various symptoms which occur in winter have an adverse effect on our daily lives. Whether at work, at play or in school, a runny nose and irritating cough will diminish our activities. In a study of 232 participants carried out in a large Swiss company over six months (October to March), the BIO-STRATH liquid and BIO-STRATH tablet groups did significantly better than the "control group" and the "flu vaccination" group. Improvements were observed in the fields of general health, concentration, fatigue, vitality and stress.
STRESS AT SCHOOL.
Current changes in enviroment, floods of stimuli and the hectic pace of life mean that children and young adults are subject to greater demands than ever before. Stress at school and during free time, coupled with a diet which is often inadequate (ie. "fast food"), may reduce the body's natural resources, resulting in nervousness, fatigue and poor concentration. To demonstrate the positive actions of BIO-STRATH on children, the liquid supplement was subjected to biometric analysis in 1992 by Prof. Dr. R.B. Pelka of Munich, using data from 390 case reports of children aged between 1 and 14 years. The results of these studies, which show the benefits of BIO-STRATH food supplements on a range of conditions, are shown inFigure 3. They are ideal supplements for children (in any deliveryform) because the products are prepared without any artificial substances, preservatives and colorings.

Synopsis
Ben is a senior research engineer in the Assessment Technology Branch at the NASA Langley Research Center. formal methods team since December 1989. Applying formal methods to fault-tolerant computing and flight-critical avionics is the focus of Ben's work. Currently, he is investigating the partitioning problem for integrated modular avionics (IMA) as well as methods for automating certain classes of proofs, such as those involving real-valued arithmetic and properties of state machine models. Earlier, he completed some pilot studies for the space applications demonstration projects, and helped author the NASA formal methods guidebooks. He was also a major contributor to the Reliable Computing Platform project. Ben has interests and research experience within the general area of high integrity computing, especially as it pertains to embedded systems. Supporting areas of interest include formal methods, fault tolerance, software engineering, information security and trusted systems, networks and distributed systems, and computational logic.
Education
Ben holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin (1982). His dissertation was titled

Cyprus
When the first astronauts circled the Earth in their tiny craft, millions of listeners heard them describe the beauty of this planet, "like a blue pearl in space" and where caught up in a moment of extraordinary human revelation. Since then, much has been written about "Spaceship Earth" on whose finite resources we all depend. However, the rape of the Earth has been central to the past progress of western industrialisation: the plunder and waste of irreplaceable resources, the poisoning or destruction of fragile ecosystems, the belief that man can mould nature with no need to take account of nature's reactions to such violation. Too often, projects have been implemented without adequate regard for their ecological consequences, for the health of local residents and workers and for the socio-cultural well-being of the community. The adverse consequences of the development projects often occur because they have not been anticipated in the planning and design facets. Most ecological problems are still caused by ignorance, poverty, wrong interactions with the natural environment and by the wrong attempts to "modernise" stagnating economies and societies.
