    Several centers and institutes established with definite research goals are closely associated with the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Their directors and members belong to our faculty and their work is conducted in or around the department.
    Consortium of the Americas for Interdisciplinary Science
    The Consortium of the Americas for Interdisciplinary Science is a Category I Center of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of New Mexico (UNM) , established to encourage collaborations between Latin America and UNM in interdisciplinary science. The Consortium has the strong participation of scientists and administrators from several Latin American institutions of research and higher learning and from the National Laboratories in New Mexico. The focus of research investigations in in three specific directions which are timely and of crucial importance to advances in science and technology: nanoscience computationally complex systems , and novel materials . External sponsors of the Consortium currently include the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the Mexico-USA Foundation. Various departments and centers within UNM have lent the Consortium financial and other support from its very conception. Consortium activities involve five Departments of the
