Preface
This volume contains the papers presented at the third annual conference on Astronomical Data Analysis Software and Systems (ADASS III) which was held at the Victoria Conference Centre in Victoria, British Columbia, from the 13th to the 15th of October 1993. There were 217 registered participants at the meeting with 52 people representing 16 countries outside the United State and Canada. The number of participants from outside North America emphasizes the fact that ADASS is the world's premier meeting on astronomical software. The special topics for ADASS III were Surveys and Catalogs, Multiwavelength Analysis, Networking and Distributed Computing, and Image and Spectral Analysis. This volume is organized into sections and subsections which reflect these categories as well as sections on Visualization and User Interfaces, Real-time Software, and Systems Software for which there many contributed papers. This year's conference also included a number of BOF (Birds of a Feather) sessions on special topics including IDL, Electronic Publishing, IRAF Site Management, and Radio-astronomical Databases. In addition there was an IRAF-STSDAS-PROS-EUVE status report and IRAF panel discussion on the last day of the meeting. There were 13 computer demonstrations which were available during the meeting. The meeting had a notable start with the opening reception which was held in the First People's Gallery of the Royal British Columbia Museum, located next to the Conference Centre on Victoria's Inner Harbour.

    Astronomy
Astronomical Observatories The science of astronomy has a long tradition at the University of Vienna in Austria. Records show that astronomy has been persued since the middle ages. However, for most of the time the work of the Austrian astronomers was hampered by the lack of suitable telescopes. The largest telescope of the old Vienna Observatory, until the middle of the 19th century located on the roof of the old building of the University near the center of Vienna, had a diameter of only 6 inches. As a consequence astronomers in Vienna turned to other areas of interest; they became specialists in calculating orbits of planets and comets. During the 19th century Austria was a seafaring nation. To support the navigation of her ships at sea, Austria had, as all seafaring nations had to have, a naval observatory. The Austro-Hungarian Imperial Naval Observatory in Pola, Istria Photograph courtesy of Österreichisches Staatsarchiv Pola The oldest astronomical observatory in present-day Croatia was established in Pula in 1871 as part of the Hydrographical Institute of the Imperial and Royal Navy. Pola was the "Kriegshafen" (literally: war harbour) of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at that time.
