Mersenne Prime

A Mersenne number which is prime is called a Mersenne prime. In order for the Mersenne number , defined by
to be prime n must itself be prime . This is true since for composite n with factors r and s n = rs . Therefore, can be written as , which is a binomial number and can be factored. Every Mersenne prime gives rise to a perfect number . The first few Mersenne primes are 3, 7, 31, 127, 8191, 131071, 524287, 2147483647, ... (Sloane's ) corresponding to n = 2, 3, 5, 7, 13, 17, 19, 31, 61, 89, ... (Sloane's If is a prime , then divides iff is prime . It is also true that prime divisors of must have the form where k is a positive integer and simultaneously of either the form or (Uspensky and Heaslet 1939). A prime factor p of a Mersenne number is a Wieferich prime iff . Therefore, Mersenne primes are not Wieferich primes . All known Mersenne numbers with p prime are squarefree . However, Guy (1994) believes that there are which are not squarefree Trial division is often used to establish the compositeness of a potential Mersenne prime. This test immediately shows

Abstract
We present measurements of absorption by the 21 cm hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen toward radio sources at substantial look-back times. These data are used in combination with observations of rotational transitions of common interstellar molecules to set limits on the evolution of the fine structure constant: (alpha) over dot/alpha < 3.5 X 10-(15) yr(-1), to a look-back time of 4.8 Gyr. In the context of string theory, the limit on the secular evolution of the scale factor of the compact dimensions, R, is (R) over dot/R

    Information Handling in Astronomy:
    Beyond Technologies and Methodologies
    Abstract
A few comments are offered in the light of about thirty years of activities linked to the information flow in astronomy and of about two decades of blossoming of electronic networks and tools including the World-Wide Web. Some points are emphasized (such as the changing sociology of data centres) and wrong expectations are pointed out (such as the all-electronic era).
Introduction Let's face it: astronomy is largely a virtual science. With the exception of experiments carried out in situ by solar-system spacecraft, our knowledge of the universe is totally derived from photons reaching us from outer space. And because of the finite speed of light, we do not observe the objects the way they are, but the way they were when the photons we are collecting actually left them. As a result of the huge amount of data accumulated, but also by necessity for their extensive international collaborations, astronomers have been pioneering often in parallel with the high-energy physicists the development of distributed resources, electronic communications and networks coupled to advanced methodologies and technologies frequently much before they become of common world-wide usage. But exactly because of this kind of paradox (immense philosophical impact versus inability to interact with the observed subjects), astronomers have to be specially careful not only of the way data are handled and archived for their own professional usage and for the scientific memory of the future, but also of the way astronomy information in the broad sense is conveyed to society at large.
