What am I up to?
I am currently a student at the University of Surrey , writing up my PhD thesis titled "Network Performance Management Using Mobile Agents". Most of the work towards this thesis was done during the 4 years (1998-2002) I had been employed as a research fellow in the Networks group of the Centre for Communication Systems Research
About Me
I was born in Athens, Greece, in January 1975. I have moved around a lot since and re-located numerous times in Chania/Crete, Nicosia/Cyprus, Cardiff/Wales and Guildford/England. I have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a Master's degree in Telematics (Telecommunications and Computer Engineering). Astronomy is one of my main interests. I currently use a 4.5 inches (reflector) telescope for mostly planetary and sometimes deep space observations. I also enjoy playing classic guitar, having completed 6 years of classic guitar studies.

X-ray and Observational Astronomy Group
News 2003 February: Two Astrogrid Java Developer positions avaliable, details at http://www.astrogrid.org The XRA Group has a distinguished record in high-energy astrophysics, having played a leading role in X-ray observatories such as Ariel-V, Exosat, Ginga and Rosat, now continued with Chandra and XMM-Newton. Although an emphasis on X-ray astronomy remains, the research programme now makes use of the full range of ground-based and space-based facilities for multi-wavelength astronomy. Active research interests include: the study of white and brown dwarf stars; stellar coronae; cataclysmic variables; supernova remnants; normal, starburst and active galaxies; clusters of galaxies; deep X-ray surveys; and the cosmic X-ray background radiation. A wealth of X-ray data is now arriving from the XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories. The Group also provides access to many important data archives via LEDAS and is now participating in the Astrogrid Project, leading towards the "virtual observatory".

Science Fair Projects and Suggestions
One of the most common questions asked at the POETRY site is to provide suggestions for Science Fair topics that students can attempt. Here are some on-going projects and a list of suggestions. Follow the links to pages where students have recorded their successes and where we report our progress in getting students to use these ideas! You can also skip to the section where we answer some common questions about finding a topic. Search for Infrared Cosmic Radiation Using real data from the NASA COBE satellite to search for and identify infrared sources in the sky. You will also use this data to search for traces of the infrared light left over from the Big Bang. This project has been selected by 12 students so beginning with the 1996-1997 school year. Student Progress Reports and newsletters. Modeling the Infrared Sky Using real data from the NASA COBE satellite, students will construct several mathematical models of the minimum sky intensity in specific patches of the sky. They will examine these models to find the ones that give the best predictions for the actual sky brightness based on extrapolations from low- latitude sky data. They will then compare their predictions against the actual sky brightness near the north and south poles of the Milky Way, and estimate the level of the cosmic infrared sky background left over from the Big Bang. Projects
You will do two projects during the semester. Astronomy is based on observations, and these projects will provide you the opportunity to make your own observations and do some real astronomy. Since things happen slowly in the sky, the observations will be made over a month or more. You should try to evenly space your observations over this time. Observations must be separated by at least a day. The projects are due Fri, March 21.
Project 1: Location of sunrise/sunset
You will record the location on the horizon of the sun at sunrise or sunset over at least a month. You must have at least 8 observations. No more than 3 observations in any one week. You may choose to observe either sunset or sunrise, but all of your observations must be of the same event. You need to come up with a way to record the position of the sun. I suggest you draw the horizon and sketch in the sun's position for each observation (use the same piece of paper to record all your observations). Alternatively, you might use a compass to get the direction, or use your fist held at arm's length to make an angular measurement from a fixed object. You also need to record the date and time of your observation. You should try to make your observation as close to sunrise/sunset as possible. The

Special Projects
Special projects are two or three credit courses (vs six credits for a regular course) which can last a half or a whole term. A student doing a special project is allowed to work "independently" under a professor on a project of the professor's choosing. The professor and student usually meet once a week to discuss how the project is progressing. These web pages detail student's efforts in astronomy special projects.
