Who and What is the ADIL?
The purpose of the Astronomy Digital Image Library (ADIL) is to collect astronomical, research-quality images and make them available to the astronomical community and the general public. Patrons access the Library through the World Wide Web to search for and browse images. Once images are located in the Library, users may download them to their local machines in FITS format for further analysis. The Library provides a number of benefits not only to those looking for images, but also to those who add images to the Library's growing collection. For more on what the ADIL is all about, check the introduction to the ADIL User's Guide The Library is being developed and maintained by the Radio Astronomy Imaging Group at the National Center for Supercomputing Application (NCSA) on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) . Skip Astronomy Home Directory Research ... Online UCSC is one of the world's leading centers for both observational and theoretical research in astronomy and astrophysics. The department includes twenty-two faculty members, whose research interests range from the Solar System and the Milky Way to the most distant galaxies in the Universe and the most fundamental questions of cosmology. There are typically over a dozen postdoctoral researchers in residence, as well as a dedicated and skilled technical staff and a steady stream of visiting scientists. The UCSC department was recently ranked first in the country in research impact, based on citation studies. UCSC is also a leader in astrophysics education. The department currently enrolls about twenty-five students working towards the Ph.D. degree. Graduate students benefit from the low student-faculty ratio in the department and extensive research opportunities, as well as course offerings that cover both theoretical and observational aspects of astronomy. UCSC alumni hold positions at leading universities and research institutes around the world. The department offers an undergraduate minor in Astrophysics, and collaborates with the Physics department to offer an undergraduate major in Astrophysics. The department is involved in several major interdisciplinary research projects. The Center for Adaptive Optics is an NSF Science and Technology Center that is studying new optical correction techniques with applications in both astronomy and vision science. It is based at UCSC, but involves researchers from nearly two dozen academic, governmental, and industrial partners. The Center for the Origin, Dynamics and Evolution of Planets is part of UCSC's branch of the Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics. It brings together members of the Astronomy, Earth Sciences, and Physics departments to study planets in our Solar System and around other stars. Members of the Astronomy department interested in cosmology and high energy astrophysics also interact frequently with colleagues in the Physics department and the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics.

Socorro, New Mexico
Socorro, New Mexico, is the home of NRAO operations in New Mexico. Located on the campus of New Mexico Tech , the Array Operations Center houses scientific, engineering, technical, computer and support staff for both the Very Large Array and the Very Long Baseline Array. It includes the control center and correlator for VLBA observations and provides space for the Atacama Large Millimeter Array project. The Very Large Array (VLA) , one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin 80 km (50 miles) miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (426.5 feet) in diameter.

In our second year we have to carry out a project about a subject in astronomy. This year we chose for black holes . Now we had to think of a main question, which has become:
Do black holes exist in our Universe?
To answer this question we divided the question into subquestions. My subquestion is:
How can stars evolve into black holes?
This question is very important to answer the main question, because the current theories say that IF black holes are created there are three different sizes:
  • very low mass black holes: about 10 to 10 M sun
  • low mass black holes: about 10 to 10 M sun
  • heavy mass black holes: about 10 to 10 M sun
If there should be low mass black holes you should think that they have a progenitor of the massrange of a star. Of which kind of an object do you think of when you have an object in the massrange of a star? On the ground of the mass of a black hole you can assume that stars can evolve into low mass black holes.
The other two categories will be explained by colleagues of mine. They think that very low mass black holes originate from primordial black holes. About high mass black holes, which will be in the center of galaxies, they have different theories.
The subquestion is subsequently devided into four subquestions.
