A showcase of beautiful deep space astronomical photographs and articles to help you discover the Category Science Astronomy astrophotography and CCD Imaging Images......A Showcase of Beautiful Deep Space Astronomical Photographs Discoverthe Secrets of astrophotography. Thank you for visiting..

T hank you for visiting..
Please spend a few minutes sharing my photographic adventure. How nice it would be if we could walk out on a starry night and simply see the splendours of the cosmos. But the distances within our macrocosm are so vast that much of it can only be seen by means of long exposure photographs. This is the reason for the photographs presented here. To us on earth all of this seems far away, but in astronomical terms most of the objects presented on these pages are close neighbours. Our neighbourhood in space is our natural heritage - the earth and all of its life forms evolved from the same elements that gave light to these photographs. Since we are children of the cosmos, it is unavoidably important to our future. I had a good trip to southern France in early June with five nights when good results could be obtained. I took a combination of film and CCD images of which I have so far added all of the CCD images - M17, M16, M20, and M27 - please see the New Images section immediately below. Please visit again soon to see more results! Also please check the

    Guiding Techniques for Astrophotography
by Philip Perkins
This is a description the techniques that I use to guide my LX200 10" f/10 for long exposure astrophotography. It is organised into the following sections:
    1. Introduction
    2. Guiding Concepts (for the new user)
    3. Guiding Systems (for the new user)
    4. Guiding Equipment
    5. Viewfinder Composition and Guide Star Acquisition
    6. Autoguider Setup and Focusing
    7. ST-4 Tips / Anomalies
Sections 2 and 3 discuss guiding generally and are aimed at the new user. Sections 4 through 7 describe the techniques that I specifically use. This is explained in more detail in the Introduction, below. For those readers in a hurry, the real substance of the article is contained in Sections 5 and 6. References:
To supplement to this article readers are encouraged to refer to the following further articles:

Welcome aboard! Please click on the thumbnail to see a larger sized image of the Deep Sky object. The images have been kept to a modest size in the hope that they will download quicker (the smaller size also serves to show up less "gaffs" in the image than would otherwise be noticeable!!). There is also a brief description of each object, its visual appearance through my telescope as seen from the city and details of the equipment used to take the photo. In my view, the images look better on the monitor when viewed in a darkened room at night (however I may just be weird!). Do feel free to sign my guestbook (see bottom of page) after viewing or, alternatively, send me an

Introduction
The following elements brought me to this project.
  • I am an amateur astronomer and like the WWW, see:
  • I have:
    • a 10x50 binocular,
    • a 4.5 inch (F/8) Newton telescope,
    • a standard Nikon 35mm reflex camera (Nikormat), with a standard Nikon 50 mm (F 2.0) lens,
    • a Connectix QuickCam,
    • a Pentium 120 computer running Windows 95;
  • I read and / or viewed: The previous list may seem to be a nice collection of "things". But how are these "things" connected? Recently there was a message on the Connectix discussion list that explained how to calculate the exposure time for the QuickCam. I realized that CCD integration times of more than 1 second could be used. See the posting in the archives of the same discussion list. I also read a message that stated that

    http://homepages.tesco.net/~nik.szymanek/havering.htm
Formed in 1994, the Havering Astronomical Society is based in Upminster, Essex and contains about 60 members. The HAS was formed by members of an astronomy evening class (taught by Konrad Malin-Smith of the Croydon Astronomical Society). When the course finished it was decided to create a new astronomical society to allow the members to continue meetings on a regular basis. Meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at Cranham Community Centre, Marlborough Gardens, Cranham, Essex. 7.30 pm
Meetings The HAS meets every third Wednesday of the month. During the course of a year there are many activities available, such as outings to places of astronomical interest like the trip to Herstmonceux Science Centre and the Jodrell Bank radio telescope facility, and many "star-party" meetings at a dark-sky site in nearby Stapleford Abbots. A monthly newsletter is distributed to members at every meeting (the newsletter is sent by post to those unable to attend the meeting). In June 1998, 17 members of the HAS travelled to the Jodrell Bank radio telescope facility in Cheshire. An superb guide was provided, in the person of Professor Ian Morison, and members were shown all aspects of the Jodrell Bank facility. Excellent lectures and slide shows were also given. Recent trips this year have included a visit to the Mullard Radio Telescope facility at Cambridge.
