Click on any image to see a full-size version along with information about the object and details about the image. Links are provided to additional sources of information for many of the images. Images will be added as they are obtained and the most recent images are identified with These images are best viewed by adjusting the brightness control on your monitor to properly show all grayscales. The Cookbook Camera is a CCD camera which I built following the directions supplied in "The CCD Camera Cookbook" by Richard Berry Veikko Kanto and John Munger. More information about this camera can be found at Richard Berry's Cookbook Camera Page Color images on this page have been produced using one of two methods. Most of the color images were obtained using cyan magenta , and yellow filters following a method created by Al Kelly Richard Berry Chuck Shaw , and Ed Grafton . This method, abbreviated as WCMY imaging, combines a series of exposures through each of the colored filters with a white (no-filter) image. The second method employed was LRGB, which combines a white (no-filter) luminance image with a series of exposures through

Pinhole Astrophotography Now you're probably wondering ... at a time when, the bigger the optic - the better the observing (otherwise known as aperture fever) where is this guy coming from. Well ... some years ago (ca. 1990-91) I wanted to know what the limits of observing with the minimum of optics might be. I wondered if sunspots could be visible through a pinhole camera. It turned into a physics project that I eventually published in TPO Magazine titled: " PINHOLE SUNSPOTS - Or, Could the Ancient Egyptians Have Observed Sunspots? ". Anyway, this is about that project as well as some links to other pinhole sites, including one that uses a CCD camera and pinholes to observe stars. - BDM.
PINHOLE SUNSPOTS
or, Could the Ancient Egyptians Have Observed Sunspots?

Could the early Egyptians have viewed sunspots? Or, for that matter, is it even possible that any early peoples could have observed these solar blemishes before the discovery of the telescope and its application to astronomy by Galileo? Non-telescopic observations are not limited to just ‘naked-eye’ observing on a hazy day as one might surmise. There is one optical device for which the technology has been available for thousands of years if some curious individuals were only around to serendipitously stumble upon it. This technology is that of the pinhole camera, an optical instrument consisting of only a small circular hole and a screen upon which to project an image. Pinhole observation of sunspots? Hum-bug, you say? Well, maybe not.

A telescope is a significant investment for most of us. Before I purchased a Schmidt-Cassegrain (SCT) telescope (the Celestron Ultima 2000, or U2K) I did a lot of investigating on the Web, in books, and in other literature. I created this site to share my experience in finding information and in using this great telescope. Athough a few parts of this site are oriented towards the U2K, in general the information here is applicable to using any telescope, particularly catadioptric (either Celestron or Meade Schmidt - or Maksutof - Cassegrain) scopes including Celestron C-8s and larger, or Meade LX scopes. Note: if you are one of the many frequent visitors to this site, you may need to use the Reload button on your browser on any given page - the revisions to these pages may not appear unless you do this, to prevent your browser from loading the previously-cached page. Contents: INTRODUCTION This article is mainly for those who have only a small telescope, and is intended to show you just what can be done with such an instrument. Even if you also have a larger instrument it is good to know what your old observing buddy can do since its portability will likely allow you to take it along when you travel. Besides, using a small telescope is just plain fun! All photos shown here were taken with a 4" aperture or smaller instrument. We will cover the full spectrum of available subjects, from terrestrial and lunar to planets and deep-sky objects. As will be seen, small telescopes are capable of producing good photos of deep-sky objects, even at relatively large image scales, with today's fast color films. Since finances may be a factor for many, a minimum of accessory equipment will be stressed for each application.

I am a member of the old school, regular off the shelf film and a 35mm SLR camera. The first section below deals with Piggyback photography, a camera mounted on top of my Celstar C8 telescope. The scope is motor driven at the same speed as the stars move across the sky allowing long exposures with no streaks as you would have with a fixed tripod. The second section has images taken with the same camera mounted directly to the scope. This arrangement is referred to as Prime Focus. My equipement for piggyback is a Pentax SP 500 SLR camera. It has a 50mm f/1.9 lens but rather than use it wide open I step down one stop to f/2.8. For widefield star images this helps to decrease viginetting or out of focus stars near the edge of the frame. It is not dependent on batteries for extended exposures and I use a cable release to trip the shutter to avoid any shaking to eliminate blurred images. The piggyback images are Widefield, that is they are of a large section of the sky. I tried to capture constellations in each shot but in some cases the larger constellations were too big for the 50mm lens. For those a 35mm or 28mm wideangle lens would have been better. If I ever become satisfied with my results I will have to purchase a wideangle lens. There are numerous websites that describe the basic methods I use. Do a web search for astrophotography to get some tips. There are many types of images you can make with just a camera and a regular tripod.
