HOW TO ADAPT A GRAYSCALE QUICKCAM FOR ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY ?
In order to adapt a (Connectix) Logitech grayscale QuickCam for astrophotography it is adviseable to disassemble the camera-head, carefully removing the objective lens and the IR-blocking filter. Then, just mount the remaining components (basically a printed circuit that contains the CCD chip) so that the modified camera can be easily adapted to the prime focus of a given telescope (for instance, through a 1-1/4" eyepiece adaptor) . An excellent page with detailed instructions for disassembling a grayscale QuickCam was found here , but apparently it is no longer available. One of the best places to get all the information needed is now perhaps the Astrocam web-page (in French) . Also take a look at this link for a list of sites describing QuickCams adapted for astronomy. See also Pedro Ré's web page, another Portuguese amateur that uses QuickCams.

Welcome to my collection of (very) amateur astrophotography. Although I was a professional photographer for many years, I find the techniques of astrophotography a great challenge. My camera equipment consists of Nikon FM2, FM10and Nikkormat EL 35mm Cameras, 35mm, 50mm, 200mm and 500mm lenses, and a Hasselblad 500c with 80mm lens. I use my Vixen SP R150S Newtonian and Meade ETX 90mm Maksutov telescopes mainly from my light polluted back yard in surburban Sydney, Australia. I have recently aquired a Phillips Vesta webcam, and plan on eventually using this for CCD imaging of the brighter celestial objects.

My interest in astronomy was rekindled in 1997 (after a 25 year dormancy) with the appearance of Hale-Bopp. I dragged out my Nikon FG (early 80's vintage) and had it repaired (stuck shutter), bought a shutter cable, and took my tripod out for several nights. Four rolls of film later I had several decent photos to remember this great comet with, and I had ignited a passion for astrophotography. I started going to Raleigh Astronomy Club meetings and researching mounts, telescopes and cameras in May 1997. I didn't want to spend alot of time building things from scratch I wanted to start taking pictures. By December 1997, I had the main pieces needed to get started taking photographs of deep sky objects:
  • Losmandy HGM-200 Mount (Integrated digital encoders, 150lb. payload)( picture Celestron C-14 Optical Tube and f7 focal reducer SBIG ST-8 Camera (temperature control, three resolutions - 9/18/27 microns, autoguider)
This list is just what I decided on. A very fine, somewhat smaller budget system, can be built around a Meade 8/10" LX-200 and an ST-7 camera.

Reinhard Ilk (minimum resolution: 800 x 600 - best resolution: 1024 x 768) Hello and welcome to my world of the night skies' splendors. On a dark evening at a holiday location at the sea some of us may have a look at the stars above, saying "Oh, what a sky, this is something we never have at home!" But indeed we do have a sky like this, but we do not care! We don't take the time for going out of the city just a few dozens of kilometers, for if we did, we'd see a universe, the scale of which we hadn't been aware of for much too long. Most of the pictures you can see here were taken at a location not far away from suburban city lights (30 to 80 km from the city of Vienna, Austria). The pictures shall illustrate both vanity and eternity in our universe. Dying stars and their remnants, from which the cradles of a new generation of stars form, on the one hand. Clusters of galaxies, which may have persisted in their structure since the ignition of first starlight, on the other. I tried to lay down some details to all of these objects in a few explanatory remarks which you can read after clicking at the images. In addition, you will be able to watch the objects at higher resolution. As you might wish to visit other websites designed more professionally, I have added a few crosslinks to pages of other astro- photography amateurs. Mine won't improve so swiftly for ... oh, I think I have to finish ... the clouds break up, and I have to hurry shuffling my scope into my car. Sorry, but I have to leave you alone with my pictures now. Enjoy. Maybe we'll meet each other out there on the hills?

Each image is identified as to where I took it. Many of my earliest images were taken from my driveway in north suburban Chicago. Hence, the theme of my Web site. Since then, I have also taken images from dark sites in New Mexico and, most recent, Australia I have organized the images according to type (galaxies, globular clusters, nebulae, etc.). The images are shown in the alphabetical order of their astronomical designation (e.g., , ...). Each image has a thumbnail image along with its name. Clicking on the thumbnail will take you to a page dedicated to the object. The object's page will contain a 1/4th size image, a brief description of the object, parameters of the image (how I actually took the picture), and a link to the full size image. I am using this organization to help improve the performance of these pages. My intent is to provide my

This page is intended to describe how I take my images from my driveway. Fifteen years ago the area was semi-rural, with reasonably dark skies that permitted casual observing of the Milky Way. Today, it is completely suburbanized, and the Milky Way is just a memory. The Telescope. The CCD Cameras. Preparation. Imaging. ... A pictorial view of these steps.
The Telescope
ST6 Log contains a NightTimes article from 1993 that describes how I first learned to use the Santa Barbara Instruments Group ST-6 Imaging Camera. As mentioned in the article, I completed my Messier list using a 4" Unitron refractor and a second-hand homemade 8" Newtonian. It was the release of the ST-6 by SBIG that convinced me I could create worthwhile astrophotographs from my home, even though I had given up on visual astronomy under my increasingly light-polluted skies. My first CCD images were taken through a used 10" Meade 2120 (f/6.3). In late 1994 I replaced the 2120 with a Meade 10" LX200 (f/6.3). Both scopes were purchased from Shutan Camera & Video in Chicago. With the 2120 I had to mount the telescope on the equatorial wedge & tripod every time I wanted to observe or photograph. The LX200, with its heavier and more stable fork mount, is simply too heavy for this, so I bought a tripod dolly from JMI. Now I keep the LX200 fully assembled at all times, and simply wheel it out from my garage. Not as good as being permanently mounted, but much better than before!

Astrophotography
The subject of astrophotography is rather large to cover in a short website article but there are several ways to take pictures of the night sky.
  • Camera on tripod with long exposure.
  • Camera on equatorial mount or piggybacked on a telescope.
  • Pointing the camera at the telescope eyepiece.
  • Camera attached to the focuser of a telescope.
The first method is the simplest. Using a camera, such as the Zenit 312m , locked on a standard photographic tripod, or even lain on it's back pointing at the sky, with a long exposure will reveal the night sky beautifully. The classic photograph that everyone has seen is the star trails produced as the Earth spins on it's axis. Use a standard 50mm lens on a 35mm SLR at the widest aperture and with the lens focused on infinity. Exposures as short as 10 seconds using a 400ASA film will freeze the stars' motion. Longer exposures will produce some blur but reveal more, particulary the different stellar colours. Try it and see. Mounting a camera piggyback on an equatorially mounted telescope means that you can now follow the stars as the move. Now longer exposures will have pin point stars and lots of them. Any subject in the foreground though will be blurred such as the trees. Use the telescope's slow motion drives to follow a star in the centre of the eyepiece, or if you have one, turn the electric drive on. (This method will not work with an alt-azimuth mount). Longer focal length lenses can be used to take in smaller areas of sky. Normally not more than a 150mm focal length is recommended.

Introduction
The night sky has been a source of wonderment for as long as there have been people to gaze up at it. The ancients believed that there was magic in the celestial bodies and even named them for their deities and heroes. It is not surprising that people love to photograph those objects and that viewers are invariably impressed with almost any decent astrophotograph.
While taking spectacular photos of deep space objects like nebula and galaxies requires special equipment and lots of practice, it is fairly straightforward to take good photographs of the relatively bright objects in our solar system. It is quite easy to take photographs of the moon, and while it is more challenging to take photographs of the planets it might be possible for anyone with access to a telescope.
The remainder of this article will focus on using a digital camera to take photographs of the moon. Because digital cameras provide instantaneous results and bad shots cost nothing, they are an excellent way to experiment with astrophotography.
