Titan Wrap-up
Four battezones provide simultaneous competition, unbeatable excitement
By Kevin Neuendorf // USOC Media Services // Feb. 18, 2003 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. The 2003 Titan Games began with a stirring tribute to U.S. Olympic legends and ended with weightlifter Shane Hamman providing the defining Titan Games moment with a 500-pound clean and jerk. Packed in the middle were three days of non-stop action and enthusiasm as athletes in the sports of boxing, fencing, judo, karate, shot put, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling took their first steps on the Road to Athens. The San Jose Event Center received an Olympic makeover as four “battle zones” were placed on the floor, providing a forum for simultaneous competition and unbeatable excitement. The Titan Games helped showcase the journey of athletes as they prepare for the Olympic Games. Nineteen countries, 184 athletes and eight National Governing Bodies (NGBs) – USA Boxing, U.S. Fencing, USA Judo, U.S. Karate, U.S. Taekwondo, USA Track and Field, USA Weightlifting and USA Wrestling – received the type of exposure usually reserved for the Olympic Games. "The Titan Games was a celebration of the competitive spirit and athletic excellence that makes the Olympic movement special,” said USOC Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Ward. “We would like to thank the National Governing Bodies for their support and guidance in making this a first-class event. The USOC also extends its appreciation to the sponsors, the San Jose Sports Authority and the city of San Jose for their support. Most importantly, we salute the athletes, the Titans, who made this event a reality.”

"Superstar" Billy Graham
By Steve Slagle " I am the man of the hour, the one with the power, too sweet to be sour..." So went one of Billy Graham's favorite interview quotes. A revolutionary champion who was way ahead of his time, this hated villain was one of the most colorful personalities (and later, one its most tragic stories) in the history of wrestling. He was also one of the biggest box-office attractions ever, and a true legend who has been imitated and copied often through the years. Standing 6'4 and weighing 275 lbs., with long blonde hair, psychedelic tie-dyed trunks, a deep bronze tan, and a body absolutely rippling with power, the arrogant braggart from Paradise Valley, AZ. created a look and character that would go on to influence either directly or indirectly virtually everyone in pro wrestling that came after him. Wayne Coleman, after playing football and winning numerous bodybuilding titles as an amateur, entered the sport via Stu Hart's Calgary-based Stampede Wrestling promotion. Wrestling under his given name, the rookie Coleman learned and improved, to the point where he returned to America, where he was promoted as the youngest "brother" in the famous Graham wrestling "family." Almost instantly, "Superstar" Billy Graham made a huge impact on the sport, and after only a couple of years in the business, Graham was involved in main-event matches, giving Verne Gagne a serious run for the A.W.A. World title while drawing sold-out crowds all across the multi-state territory.

Ngeny runs second fastest 1000 meters
Young Kenyan middle distance running sensation Noah Ngeny once again came up with the second fastest time in history in a track race last Saturday evening in Nice, France. Running in a 1000-meter event, Ngeny clocked 2:12.66, a time only world record holder Sebastian Coe (2:12.18) has ever beaten.
In his first race since running a 3:43.40 mile behind Hicham el Guerrouj's 3:43.13 on July 7, the 20-year-old Ngeny started off fast as he was paced through 400 meters in 51.03 by David Kiptoo. Coe's hand-timed 400 in his record was 51.3. Ngeny lost some ground to the world record in his next lap, reaching 800 in 1:44.79 as opposed to Coe's 1:44.6. The final 400 took just under 27.9 for Ngeny and 27.6 for Coe.
There were more significant performances behind Ngeny. Kenyan Kennedy Kimwetich was second in 2:13.54, making him the fourth fastest man in history. Benjamin Kirui, an 18-year-old Kenyan, was fifth in 2:15.00, smashing the world junior record of 2:16.84 by Tunisian Ali Hakimi in 1995.
Seneca Lassiter also had a big night. Although finishing a close second to Ali Faidi Sief of Algeria in the 1500 meters, Lassiter clocked a personal best 3:33.72. That's the fastest non-Steve Holman 1500 by an American since 1990, and moved the recent University of Arkansas grad to seventh place on the

25 Books Every Marathoner Should Own
by Scott Hubbard A library that will enhance the marathoning experience while broadening its focus. Compiling this list was fun but frustrating. While not every book is directly related to marathoning, every marathoner would benefit from reading these selections. My list is a mixture of autobiography, history, instruction, fiction, and expository nonfiction. It pained me to trim many great titles from the list, and you may question some of my choices. That's fine. I used just one rule: one book per author.
My thanks to those who sent in nominations. I hope you'll be inspired, informed, and amused as you live events through the eyes of this diverse set of exciting authors. Enjoy!
1. Four-Minute Mile (Roger Bannister)
2. Running Tide (Joan Benoit)

I remember my angst when I heard Joan Benoit had just had knee surgery 17 days before the first Women's Olympic Trials Marathon in 1984. Fast forward to the finish chute in Olympia, Washington, where I stood 10 feet from Joan as she stooped to put her hands on her knees after completing what seemed the impossible just days beforeÑwinning the race. Her subsequent Olympic Marathon victory added to her legend. Tide describes how Joan turned to running in high school, her training, her rivals, and how much she treasures the simple things in her life. It's a story about her supportive family, pressures of the public and media, and mostly about her burning desire to excel. (Knopf, 1987) 3. The Death Valley 300 (Richard Benyo)

  • Generate a "relationship profile" delineating how both Asia and the West must adapt past practices to meet the coming challenges of developing Asia's huge demand for foreign direct investment (FDI)
Explore the key scenario variables and dynamics likely to emerge as Asia's FDI requirements balloon in the coming years, focusing on the need for viable rule sets underpinned by a stable regional security environment
Determine which political-military instability scenarios present the greatest potential to ruin Asia's FDI climate Construct realistic downstream scenarios (covering the next 10-15 years) capturing Asia's movement toward, or away from, a shared FDI rule set with the world's leading economies (i.e, the Triad "squared").

I just wanted to let you know that I have tried your Smith machine explosive presses before. I learned of them from Ironman (I was bored) a few issues ago. I am a little bit scared of them though. I got my friend to catch the weight when it was at its highest point. He missed. I came about two inches from serious injury. It was not pretty. One can also do these in a power rack with a spotter or two. I am also thinking of doing them with dumbbells. Of course, one would have to throw them out a little as well as up. That would add a little bit of variety to the movement though. I just started my first cycle of Tribex and I hope I get the same results as most of the other readers. Thanks a bunch, Craig
(Another Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu guy) My apologies to Ironman if they beat me to the punch. I just did my Katzenjammers today, but I did them at the end of the chest workout when I'd already gone fetal and my pecs were trashed. That way, I didn't have to use as much weight. I also made sure to eliminate the stretch-shortening cycle by taking a good one or two-second pause before exploding upwards. That also forces me to use less weight and lessens the chance of injury. Try both of those suggestions before you kill yourself. You're kidding about doing them with dumbbells, right? You're liable to cause debilitating injuries to yourself and any other poor schmuck that happens to wander by as you fling your weights upwards.

In the CD player: "Down With The Sickness" by Disturbed
I really like those Sprint PCS commercials. The Jimmy Shea one has been in my head for like a week..."I wonder who tried to call..." My favorite is the one where the woman's like "I ask her 'How are my kids' and she FLOURS my kids." Then they show her little kids all covered with flour. And the babysitter's like "But if I had been right, you would have come home and been like 'Why didn't you flour my kids'" Funny as hell.
I went down for a smoke with Afrodite and Mo and it's unanimous, we are all irritated by Alicia Keys. I've never been able to get on the Alicia bandwagon, I'm like "That's okay guys, I'll just walk."
One of the best parts of the Winter Olympics was the fact that the Miami Herald sent Dave Barry to cover it, my favorite columnist. He wrote like 15 columns about it, as opposed to the usual once a week bit. Incidentally, here are the two things people should know about my weblog since people keep e-mailing me and asking. The words that aren't black are links. To leave a comment, just click on the word "comments." I know, simple really but you'd be surprised.
So another thing I heard on Howard this morning was that the families of two people who died on the same plane as Aaliyah (who I'm still sad about by the way) are suing the company that owns the plane, Aaliyah's record company AND her estate for money. Nice huh? That's just fucking beautiful really. I fail to see how her estate and record company would be liable in any way. The fault lies with the airplane company for hiring a pilot without a license AND with the pilot, whose job it was to make sure the plane wasn't overloaded. It wasn't the job of Aaliyah or any of her crew to determine and uphold the appropriate load capacity of the plane. Those responsibilities lie with the plane company and the pilot respectively. Sometimes it's just amazing what people will capitalize on for money. Is it just me or has anyone else realized that tort law in this country has gone out of control? It started with the 12 ill-educated people who sat on the jury of
