F ACTS FOR F AMILIES N ot all children grow from infancy through their adolescent years without experiencing some bumps along the way. While every child is unique and special, sometimes they encounter emotions, feelings or behavior that cause problems in their lives and the lives of those around them. Families often worry when their child or teenager has difficulty coping with things, feels sad, can't sleep, gets involved with drug, or can't get along with family or friends. The AACAP developed Facts for Families to provide concise and up-to-date information on issues that affect children, teenagers, and their families. The AACAP provides this important information as a public service and the Facts for Families may be duplicated and distributed free of charge as long as the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is properly credited and no profit is gained from their use. The AACAP has produced the Facts for Families in English and Spanish. Other translations available on the WWW, while perhaps based on the original, were created independently and without benefit of AACAP review. They are available in English

SERVICES
Families with special needs children need a continuum
of services from which they can choose. Different families
have different needs. Much of this depends on factors such
as the child’s behavior, developmental stages, and/or
emotional needs. Support services can play a significant
role in helping a child and the family deal more effectively
with the issues common with special needs children.

The following support services
are available through AASK-AZ: Respite Prog ram Traditional Respite Services Respite care services provide short term, temporary relief to parents of special needs children. Trained providers are matched with families requesting this service for a few hours or a few days. Respite care is generally provided in the home of the family to maintain consistency, familiarity and to avoid change and fear for the child. Parent’s Night Out Established in 1996, these quarterly activities are provided to

    http://psychology.rutgers.edu/socialcourses.html
The Courses in Social and Communication Systems This component of the graduate program includes topics in social psychology, social cognition, and communications systems. Course work and research training emphasize Attachment Theory and parent-child interaction. These areas have been shaped by evolutionary, developmental, psychoanalytic, psychobiological, cognitive, and cultural influences, and students gain an understanding of these multidisciplinary perspectives. The measurement of secure and insecure attachment and the integration of various intrapersonal and interpersonal issues (locus of control, college student functioning, attitudes toward mother, maternal-fetal attachment, friendships, and romantic relationships) within an attachment framework represent major research interests. Quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis are incorporated into both course work and research activities Attachment Theory Siegel This course examines the evolutionary, psychoanalytic, developmental, and cognitive foundations of Attachment Theory. The work of Bowlby and Ainsworth is the basis from which current issues in Attachment Theory are explored. These issues include measurement of attachment patterns, continuity and generational transmission of these patterns, family ecology, temperament, child development, cross cultural differences, adult interpersonal relationships, death and bereavement, and psychopathology. Human Parent-Child Interaction Siegel This course examines the parent-child interrelationship from evolutionary, historical, psychobiological, and cross cultural perspectives. Topics include those specific to mother, father, and other family members; single, adolescent, and gay and lesbian parenthood; and parenting influences on the cognitive, emotional, and moral development of the child.

    Foster Parents to Adopt
Adapted from Foster Parent Adoption: What Professionals Should Know (1991) by Debra Smith, posted by the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse at www.calib.com/naic To increase the number of foster parents who adopt children, agencies should consider the following placement programs and policies:
    • Financial matters Do adoption subsidies sustain families, or will they be worse off financially if they adopt rather than continue as long-term foster parents? A family that relies on foster care payments and Medicaid coverage to meet a child's needs is not likely to give that up simply to finalize an adoption.
Post-adoption services Are post-adoption services available? Perhaps a family worries that all the support the foster care worker provides will disappear if they choose to adopt. Reassurancein the form of a contract for servicescan put these fears to rest. Are other foster parent adopters, adoptive parent support groups, or therapists with expertise in adoption available? Provide their addresses and telephone numbersconcrete support is indispensable.
