Hi,
I put together this website to try and encourage EI radio experimenters to become active on the VHF bands. Between May and August 50MHz (6m band) will be open to Europe almost everyday. A lot of the time the signals are worked easily with a small dipole and a few watts. You do not need a beam unless you want to work outside Europe but saying that I know amateurs in Ireland who have worked the USA and South Africa using verticals !!
To give you an idea of type of signals you can expect to hear I made some recordings of Sporadic E, Aurora, Tropo, F2, TEP and Meteor Scatter DX and saved them as Real Audio files.. Its amazing the DX that can be worked with a single beam. Hungary on 2m or Argentina on 6m - Interested ? Secrets of the Polar Aurora
by David P. Stern From talk presented in Anchorage, Alaska, 11 August 2002
Alaska is known as a good place for seeing the polar aurora, also known as "Northern Lights." Originally the phenomenon was named "Aurora Borealis," Latin for "northern dawn," since in the lower 48 states or in mid-Europe it may appear (on the rare occasions when it does) as a glow on the northern horizon, as if the sun was rising from the wrong direction. But the southern hemisphere has the same phenomenon, with the glow coming from the south , so scientists prefer to call it simply the "Polar Aurora." Most visitors to Alaska never get to see an aurora, because they come in the summer, when skies are rarely dark enough. Alaskans claim that only around August 16 does the sky get dark enough to see stars, which is when aurora stands out. After that date, your best bet is to go to Fairbanksand since the brightest auroras occur around midnight (or later, due to Alaska's time zone), you might have to stay up a long time. Perhaps it is better then to ask the night clerk at your hotel to ring you up if a good display becomes visible.

Space Plasma Physics Group SSL Marshall NASA Welcome to the Current UVI Image page WHAT IS THE AURORA DOING TODAY? What would it be like to sit out in space and look down on the Earth with special UV glasses? Well, if you can't do that, what if you could send up a camera that could take UV pictures and send them back to us? NASA's Ultraviolet Imager is just the camera that can do that. It was launched in February 1996. This is the most recent picture made with the Ultraviolet Imager. It is updated about every 7 minutes when the Polar spacecraft is in contact with the Earth. Its main job is to make pictures in the UV of the aurora, or sometimes called the northern and southern lights. Because of special filters , the glare of the bright Sun is not a problem and the aurora can be seen both on the night and day side of the Earth. The filters used in the UVI block the visible reflection of the sun off the Earth's surface so that only the ultraviolet wavelengths are imaged. When the activity of the aurora is low, we don't see much and the images tend to be blue/red. When the activity is high, the auroral oval is bright gold or white and usually dynamic. The bright features result from energy being deposited in the Earth's atmosphere about 100-150 km up in the form of energetic electrons. These electrons collide with the Earth's atmosphere, which excite its constituents (primarily molecular nitrogen and atomic oxygen). The excited molecules or atoms release the energy in the form of light. The UVI detects the ultraviolet emitted light. The time is the Universal Time. Subtract 6 hours to get Central Standard Time.

Welcome Folks to My Home Page
I sincerely appreciate the visit!! I thought it was time to transfer some Aurora photos to your computer screen in the exact same manner in which they form - via waves of electromagnetic energy: Your power cord is the solar wind, the electrons are vibrating through it, they enter your computer and are amazingly directed by magnetic forces into strange and bizarre shapes that hit your screen, and BLAMMO, a zillion photons of colored light are released into the following images. I hope you can catch the energy!! Each of the following photographs represent both an experience and a preserved peak moment in Mother Nature. I feel she is the artist, and I am the photographer...and I love it! I'm including my top 15 photos. If you're interested in a photo not displayed here please feel free to contact me and we can work it out from there. Photos Note Cards Showtimes Ordering ... About Todd

spaceweb@oulu.fi - last update: 18 December 1998, 1205 UT (RR)
Introduction
Geomagnetic field lines can guide energetic electrons and protons from magnetosphere or magnetosheath down to Earth's atmosphere . Precipitating particles loose their energy via collisions with the neutral particles and ionize them at approximately the same altitude range than solar UV radiation when creating the ionosphere . In addition, some of the atmospheric constituents are excited to higher energy levels: this can lead to emission of auroral light. Most of this activity occur within auroral oval (the major exceptions being the sun-aligned arcs and low-latitude aurorae An often used classification divides the auroras into discrete and diffuse precipitation. In addition, while the nightside auroras reflect the dynamics of the magnetotail, dayside precipitation relates more directly to solar wind parameters. Auroras during magnetospheric substorms and, especially, the great auroras during magnetospheric storms can create extremely impressive spectacles, and it is no wonder that auroras have entered into the folklore of peoples living at high latitudes.
