Australia business conditions fall again in Jan
12 February 2003
SYDNEY: Australian business conditions fell sharply in January to their lowest level in a year, suggesting the non-farm economy is slowing at a greater pace than originally thought, a survey found yesterday.
But business confidence rebounded unexpectedly, albeit from a low base, due to seasonal influences and better profitability outcomes in the retail/wholesale sectors. According to the National Australia Bank monthly business survey, its business conditions index fell six points to a reading of three points. The business confidence index rose seven points to a reading of 12, erasing most of the 10 tick fall made in the previous three months. NAB's index gauges key business indicators such as forward orders, wage costs, capital expenses, capacity use and export sales.

Economy - overview: Australia has a prosperous Western-style capitalist economy, with a per capita GDP on par with the four dominant West European economies. The Australian economy has been resilient in the face of the global economic downturn in 2001 chalking up 2.3% GDP growth, as the domestic economy is offsetting the external slump and business and consumer confidence remains robust. Canberra's emphasis on reforms is a key factor behind the economy's strength, and Australia is expected to outperform its trading partners in 2002, with GDP growth projected to be 3% or better. Australia probably will experience some weakness in mid-2002 as its business cycle tends to lag the US by about six months, and larger problems could emerge if Australia's trade position worsens. GDP: purchasing power parity - $465.9 billion (2001 est.)

New Zealand I. A Brief Description of the Higher Education System in New Zealand . According to the Ministry of Education, as of 2000, there were 38 public tertiary institutions including eight universities. Private tertiary education providers are composed of private institutions registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and other institutions receiving Ministry of Education grants. There are thousands of private tertiary education providers, of which 452 offer formal tertiary education programs (Ministry of Education, 2001a). There were 264,353 formally enrolled tertiary students as of July 31, 2000 according to the Ministry of Education (2001a). Of these, 225,180 (85 percent) attended public tertiary education providers. More than 46 percent of tertiary students were enrolled at a university, 33 percent at a polytechnic, nearly 5 percent at a college of education, and 1 percent at a Wananga. Of the 264,353 students enrolled, 58 percent were full-time students. The tuition fees of tertiary education providers have increased significantly in recent years. According to the Ministry of Education (1999), tuition fees for full-time and full-year students have increased by an estimated average of 12 percent per year since 1994. The government has recently offered an increase of 2.6 percent in government funding to those tertiary education institutions that agree to freeze tuition fees at 2001 levels. The following table (Table 1) shows samples of annual tuition fees in 2001 charged by different types of tertiary education providers.

New Zealand was the first country to successfully defend the America's Cup outside of the USA. Yet the technology and design solutions required to do that were achieved at a fraction of the cost of European and US competitors." A Nation and Location of Innovation ' Investment New Zealand document Ingenuity, entrepreneurial flair and a 'can do' attitude; these are some of the characteristics that make New Zealand businesses increasingly successful internationally, particularly in areas like information and communications technology, niche manufacturing, aqua culture and creative industries such as design, fashion, film and television. But it is not simply about individual attributes - New Zealand itself is geared to business.
