Kiwanis International - NZSP Division Two (Waikato) and Australia Division Six (Melbourne) Lisa's Trip Report A report on Lisa Woolerton's trip to Australia as part of the 1998 Kiwanis Australia - New Zealand Youth Exchange. Text and photograph by Lisa Woolerton Going to Australia has been one of the highlights of my life. I met many different people from all different backgrounds but mainly those people came from the big city that I was overawed by. To me, Melbourne is so far the biggest city I have ever seen, and is also the most exciting. I was given the opportunity to participate in activities such as visiting zoos, where I saw Australian Native Animals like the eagles, wombats, flying foxes, snakes and at the other zoo I saw bicens, buffalos, and rhinoceros. There was only one hiccup with my trip, I went when there was no gas available for showers, heaters or cooking. Never mind though, I still had a fantastic time. I arrived at the Melbourne Airport and was given a big warm welcome to Australia by Alan and Ivy Wren. I ate lunch with them and they took me to the place where I was to spend my first few nights in Australia. When I was staying with the McLennan family I was taken to the Queen Victoria Market, up the Rialto (which is a really tall building) from which we could see a lot of Melbourne, and the Healesville Sanctuary. This is where we saw the native animals such as the wombats and snakes (both of which I touched), and the eagles, platypus and flying foxes. We also visited the IMAX cinema (here there was a really big screen) and saw a documentary on The Elephant Kingdom. For dinner, my host family presented me with kangaroo meat and chicken sausages. I had never eaten these before so I was surprised that I liked them.

New Zealand so far has been very hassle-free. This hostel is packed with lots of great features (bars, café, movie rooms, TV rooms etc., although the rooms are a bit sterile and the lift appears to be very close to death trap classification. I left the Pink House hostel in Sydney at 4am to get the bus to the airport. Tonight will hopefully be the first decent night's sleep I've gotten since Melbourne. My room was pretty dodgy last night. Beer cans everywhere, as well as two poms who smoked joints back-to-back while they exchanged stories about taking various illegal substances they'd taken around King's Cross. Generally, the mood of the room was caught permanently in that moment in the early morning when the pot has run out, and everyone's coming down. Paranoia, antisocial and eerily quiet between the odd trivial remarks. Understandably I didn't spend a lot of time in there. The movie room was a very good alternative - warm, friendly and of course entertaining. The Dutch couple whose dorm I stayed in previously were in there, as well as some girls from Newcastle who thoughtfully let me inside the hostel very red-eyed at 7am. They'd been in Sydney a few weeks, previously through China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Asked them a lot of questions about Vietnam and Cambodia and got some good information off them. They had apparently no hassles at all up there which is encouraging to hear, as I'd like to go up there at some point.

PRESS RELEASE: Memphis to be a dad!
January 26, 2002 After much anticipation and several months of observation by Zoo staff, Perth Zoo today announced that one of its Southern White Rhinoceroses is pregnant.
Sabie, the younger of two female rhinoceroses brought to Perth Zoo in 1999, has returned promising hormone test results for the past 5 months confirming the hopes of Zoo staff. International expert, Dr Franz Schwarzenberger, from Vienna recently confirmed the opinion of Zoo veterinary staff based on the distinctive pattern of five year old Sabie's progesterone levels.
Two-tonne Memphis was the subject of intense community and media interest in 1996 when the Zoo conducted the very successful and long-running ÔMate for Memphis' campaign which raised funds to bring a female rhinoceros to Perth. In 1999, two young female rhinoceroses were brought to Perth from South Africa and introduced to their new mate.
Perth Zoo's Chief Executive, Brian Easton said Memphis quickly developed an attachment to the older female, Katala, but was not immediately taken with Sabie.

cryonics life-extension room parties. Weeks earlier I had made many e-mail arrangements with cryonicists for meeting including a gathering of Australian cryonicists at my room parties. Dealing with the organizers of AussieCon was difficult. Charles Taylor, who was in programming, was the only person who ever responded to any of my e-mail messages of all the people I tried to contact from e-mail addresses on the AussieCon website. After several exchanges I got Charles to put me on the Nanotechnology panel and to create a Y2K panel, of which I would be moderator. The Y2K panel took some arguing, but I convinced him that speculating about events in 100 days is similar to speculating about events in 100 years. (For my essays on the Y2K computer bug see the Computer section of my website.) It was Charlie who finally informed me that room parties were not allowed in the hotel where the events were being held and this was only after the hotel allowing parties was fully booked. It was not possible to contact the hotel directly since a booking agency was being used. Most of those at the booking agency were not very helpful either, but I finally found one helpful woman who put me on a waiting list. When she let me know of an available room from a cancellation, I took the room and sent her a personal money order for Aus$50 as a token of my appreciation. September 1st, 1999 disappeared from my life when I flew across the International Date Line (although I had a 40-hour September 12th on my return which could have been 43-hours had I not flown from Los Angeles to Toronto). In Melbourne, I shared the hotel room with Keith Lynch, who had also been my WorldCon roommate at Winnipeg, Glasgow & Los Angeles. Despite archiving CryoNet, receiving a Transport Training from Mike Darwin and more recently being President of the Life Extension Society in the Washington, DC area, Keith has still not signed-up with any cryonics organization and remains a "fellow traveler".

Healesville Sanctuary, Australia
This "zoo" is exclusively of Australian fauna only, set in a large area of native bushland . There are many displays throughout the day telling visitors more of the finer points of the inhabitants. The enclosures are very roomy, with several walk through enclosures. There is a main pathway with smaller paths running off this which leads to the animals. There is a cafeteria on site. Healesville is located about 120 kilometres from Melbourne. Last visited: 1998 Submitted by Nigel Foster nigelwfoster@hotmail.com Just browsing through your review pages, I was surprised by Nigel Foster's under-appreciation of Healesville Sanctuary, Victoria, Australia. To say that Melbourne has pretty much everything that Healesville would have is very misleading. To be sure, nearly every Australian collection these days has a large section on Australian animals, and Melbourne has upped this in recent years (I've been three times since 1992, most recently late last year) but Healesville not only specialises in Australian animals but in endangered Victorian animals such as Leadbetter's Possum, Helmeted Honey-eater, Superb Lyrebird and, of course, the Platypus where they were the first to breed it (and had twins in 1999!). Yes, Melbourne is excellent and getting better. When its master plan is complete it will compete with the best in the world. Already, I think the gorilla exhibit is the best I have seen, and that includes San Diego. But Healesville Sanctuary to me is the complete zoo, the only one I have ever visited where the visitor can actually see the three aims of zoos in practice; conservation with their breeding of endangered species, research - for example into the causes of bush die back and education with their excellent educational centre.

Other sea lions and fur seals
Southern sea lion
Otaria byronia (Blainville, 1820)
Nomenclature
There is some confusion about the correct scientific name of this species. Although Otaria byronia is now widely accepted, still Otaria flavescens (Shaw, 1800) is used as an alternative (Vaz-Ferreira, 1982). Rice (1998) argues, that O. flavescens is the correct name. Common names that are used instead of Southern Sea Lion include South American Sea Lion and Patagonian Sea Lion.
Appearance
Males measure on average 260 cm and weigh around 300 kg. Females are usually about 200 cm and weigh 150 kg. Pups measure around 80 cm and weigh from 10 to 15 kg. Male pups are usually bigger. The Southern sea lion has a dark brown dorsal side and a yellowish brown ventral. Males have lighter coloured manes. Females have no manes, but have a lighter coloured fur in the head and neck area. Pups are born with a black coat. After a few months they have a grey coat which at the age of one year is reddish brown.
Distribution
The Southern sea lion can be found on both the Atlantic and Pacific shores of South America. On the Atlantic side the range stretches from Rio de Janeiro at 23S down to the southern tip of the continent at 55S. At the Pacific side it ranges as far north as Zorritos in Peru (4S). There is no obvious migration.

19th October 1999 Two horny travellers that arrive at Perth International Airport tonight for Perth Zoo’s Southern White Rhinoceros breeding program will undergo at least 30 days Quarantine before going on public view. The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) and Perth Zoo have combined forces to ensure Australia’s Quarantine integrity was upheld during the rhinos’ exciting arrival. The animals, from South African National Parks, were part of a group of 12 rhinos destined for Australian and New Zealand zoos. AQIS Western Australian senior veterinarian John Johnston said the large size of the import project saw an extensive AQIS operation launched to monitor the task. "South Africa is considered a high risk country by AQIS. It is the exact opposite of Australia - a wide host of exotic pests and diseases are found there that we just haven’t seen here," Dr Johnston said. "Perth Zoo’s project is vitally important to ensure the continuation of the species but we worked together to ensure the health of Australian animals and other zoo animals were not put at risk in the process."
