No evidence killer virus linked to livestock - MAF
20 March 2003
UPDATED REPORT

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry says it has no plans to increase its checks on animals for a virus linked with a new killer disease sweeping the world.
"As far as I know, there is no evidence of a link to livestock as the origin of the virus," said Hugh Davies, MAF director of reference laboratories at Upper Hutt's National Centre for Disease Investigation. A leading New Zealand epidemiologist, Professor Roger Morris, of Massey University, said the killer virus which has so far killed 14 people in Asia could have started in fruit bats, and its spread could be due to deforestation. The Hong Kong claim has been backed up by a finding in Germany, where particles resembling a paramyxo virus have been found in some laboratory testing on a Sars patient.

GEOGRAPHY
STOCK EXCHANGE CLIMATE TIME ZONE ... RECREATION New Zealand is a unique country. Its scenery sets it apart from the rest of the world while its people have a reputation for friendliness, strength and independence. There is abundant beauty and diversity in scenery, lifestyle and culture. From rolling green farmlands to barren volcanic desert areas, from golden beaches with clear blue water to majestic snow covered mountains, New Zealand offers a sample of every possible landscape within a relatively small country.
GEOGRAPHY
New Zealand is situated in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. With two main islands - North and South Island - and other outlying islands, New Zealand encompasses an area comparable in size to Great Britain and Japan, but with a population of only 3.8 million it is one of the world's least crowded countries. The capital city, Wellington (population approximately 400,000) , and New Zealand's largest city, Auckland (population approximately 1,000,000) , are both situated in the North Island. Life in these two cities offers the convenient luxury of being both five minutes from beautiful beaches and just three hours from the mountain ski-fields. In fact, anywhere in New Zealand you are never more than two - three hours from the sandy beaches or rugged coastline. There are many lakes and rivers throughout the country and we make the most of these by enjoying leisure and action activities from fly fishing to jet boating. Other major cities and towns are Auckland, Hamilton (population 120,000), Palmerston North (population approximately 75,000), Christchurch (population approximately 400,000) and Dunedin (population approximately 110,000).

    Introduction
Environmental education is no longer simply about learning or raising awareness about how the natural systems work in isolation – it is about acquiring new perspectives, values knowledge and skills to equip us to change our behaviours to support an ecologically sustainable environment for now and the future. Today I will outline the changing focus of environmental education in Australia and how recent initiatives in environmental education within NSW schools will prepare our youth to not just know about or experience our environment but more importantly manage our environment sustainably for generations to come.
History - The last 40 Years
From the 1960’s through to the 1980’s environmental education in Australia was conducted in either specialist environmental centres such as zoos, field study centres or limited to individual subjects such as geography or natural science. In essence environmental education was being taught in isolation from other school activities.

Parks and Wildlife Service, Tasmania - Little penguin

Most of the information here may talk specifically of the Tasmanian population of Little penguins, but the folks at this island state's Parks and Wildlife Service have done a pretty good job of presenting some good general information on these unique Australasian birds. They've provided some interesting information about colonies and nest sites and even lets people in on the song of the little penguin, or fairy penguin, as it's also called. There's also good context for why the fairy penguin is having some problems in certain areas of its habitat. PUTTING ON A SWEATER FOR SURVIVAL
By: Steven Hunt - Along with some of the most unusual wildlife on the planet, Australia can also claim to be home to the world's smallest species of penguin, the fairy or little penguin. They generally live along the southeastern seaboard of the Australian continent, though there are also populations in Tasmania and New Zealand. In a story that's become all to familiar, fairy penguins are losing land to humans, and even in the part of Australia where their numbers are strongest - Phillip Island, southeast of Melbourne - they've lost over three-quarters of their breeding grounds because of human activity in the last 80 years. In January 2000, they were dealt an even greater blow.

    Year Round Destination
When is the best time to visit New Zealand?
You can visit New Zealand at any time of the year. Summer and winter temperatures vary by only about 10'C over most of the country, making New Zealand an ideal holiday destination all year round.
There are 4 quite distinct seasons - Spring (Sept-Nov), Summer (Dec-Feb), Autumn/Fall (Mar-May) and Winter (June-Aug). In summer there's plenty of sunshine, and activities in and around the water include rafting, snorkelling, diving and kayaking. You'll find snow on the mountains in winter and excellent skiing. Away from the mountains, New Zealand winters are mild and temperatures generally do not fall below freezing.
    Weather/Climate
What's the climate like? New Zealand's seasons are the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere. This means that the warmest months are December, January and February, while the coldest are in June, July and August. Don't let cold months put you off - winters tend to be short and generally fairly mild. What clothes should I take?

    Is Your Book Really Necessary?
The Penguin Book Of Contemporary New Zealand Short Stories
There were many fine local anthologies produced in the 1980s, notably Mac Jackson and Vincent O'Sullivan's New Zealand Writing Since 1945 and Marion McLeod and Bill Manhire's Some Other Country ; there was John Barnett's All the Dangerous Animals are in Zoos , Michael Morrissey's The New Fiction and a slew of women's fiction collections, including three from New Women's Press and, most recently, Lydia Wevers and Elizabeth Webby's trans-Tasman Goodbye to Romance . None, however, found the wide international circulation this will: under Penguin's reciprocal arrangements with its sister companies, copies will find their way to bookshops in Britain, Canada, the US and Australia. So how does it compare with its predecessors, and what sort of picture of our short fiction does it give to those coming to it for the first time? Going by Haley's record as a writer and Davis's as co-editor of Antic , one might have expected them to produce a more refined version of The New Fiction . Such a book would be an ideal complement to 1984's Some Other Country , whose uncompromising subtitle 'New Zealand's Best Short Stories' is undeniably accurate, allowing for the self-imposed limitation of one story for each of the 22 authors chosen, from Mansfield to Marshall. A similarly-sized selection of subsequent work, a genuinely contemporary anthology, would be more than welcome. Then again, the editors could have used

Reptile and Amphibian Taxon Advisory Groups
Many Australian and New Zealand zoos exhibit reptiles and an increasing number are exhibiting amphibians. Keeping tabs on captive breeding and the placement of specimens is difficult without some form of coordinated approach. The Joint Taxon Advisory Groups for Reptiles and Amphibians (TAGs) coordinate the management of herpetofauna, both native and exotic, within Australasian zoos. Specialised management is given to endangered species and other high value taxa, refered to as Priority Taxa with each having its own Coordinator. The TAGs are made up of professional zookeepers although some professional herpetologists are involved; current membership is around 30 representing some 26 major or private zoos. The principal objectives of the TAGs are:
    • To support and encourage the development of a regional collection, comprising individual collections. Co-operative and on-going maintenance and relevant breeding of rare, threatened or poorly known taxa. To maximise the conservation potential of Australasian zoos.
