Number 29 September Equinox 1998 ESSAY NEWS NOTES PUBLICATIONS AND WEB SITES The Study of Ethnoastronomy in Australia
by Dr. Philip A Clarke, South Australian Museum, Dep. of Anthropology, North Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia The study of ethnoastronomy offers greater insights into important ceremonial cycles and mythological beliefs of the Aboriginal people in Australia. Aboriginal seasonal patterns can only be understood when considered in relation to the movement of the cosmic entities observed in the skies. Aboriginal people were intensely interested in the Heavens and had considerable knowledge of it. Ethnoastronomical studies are able to contribute to the wider investigation of how notions of space are formed by culture.

RELIGION IN ABORIGINAL AUSTRALIA Charlesworth, M. 1992, "Introduction" in Religion in Aboriginal Australia - An Anthology, 2nd Edition. eds. M. Charlesworth, D. Bell, H. Morphy & K. Maddock, University of Queensland Press, St Lucia, pp. 1 - 20 All of these factors contributed to the atmosphere of general neglect, distortion, misunderstanding and trivialization that largely characterized the study of Australian Aboriginal religion until the 1950s. As Stanner (1965: 209) has put it, the Aborigines were viewed "as either too archaic in the social sense or too debased in the moral sense to have veritable religion". No doubt early-twentieth-century observers such as Spencer and Gillen and Howitt described accurately enough various aspects of Aboriginal religious life, though they were still under the influence of Frazer’s view, that what they were observing were magical rites and not religious ceremonies in the true sense. "Among the aborigines of Australia", the author of The Golden Bough (Frazer 1960: 72) had written, "the rudest savages as to whom we possess accurate information, magic is universally practised, whereas religion, in the sense of a propitiation or reconciliation of the higher powers, seems to be unknown." Later on, A. P. Elkin. one of the great figures in Australian anthropology, was to say that in the l920s he had been convinced, "looking at the material written by Strehlow’s father and by Spencer and Gillen, that they were dealing with religious ceremonies: but Sir James Frazer’s view that they were only magical rites was difficult to counteract" (see Shiels 1963: 252).

Although it was the first American literature to be created, Native American literature has been the last to be recognized and, to some extent, is still waiting for full recognition. Beginning with its first thousand years of oral literature and continuing to the present time with writers in all the genre of literature, Native American is an important element in the literature of this country.

    Exploring the Region
Historical Background Europeans and Aborigines - European colonization of the region began in Australia when the British needed a new penal colony where convicts could be exiled. The southeastern coast of Australia was chosen, and the first ships began arriving in 1788 in Botany Bay near modern Sydney . It should be noted, however, that it was not long before free settlers outnumbered the convicts. As Europeans began moving inland, they encountered native Aborigines , who were systematically expelled from their lands. In some places, most notably Tasmania , they were hunted down and killed.
New Zealand - British settlers were also drawn to the lush and fertile lands of New Zealand . Whalers and sealers also came in large numbers shortly before 1800, and by 1840 the British formally declared sovereignty over the region. As in Australia, the settlers ran into the native population, the Maori. The Maori were formidable fighters, with one group offering stiff resistance to the British. It wasn't until 1870 that the British forces prevailed, resulting in the loss of most of the Maori's land and their self-rule. Places The "Outback" - Most residents of Australia (and New Zealand) live in urban settlements near the coast. Australia's huge and dry interior, often termed the
