    1. INTRODUCTION This unit provides an introduction to the physical and cultural characteristics of humans living in Australia prior to the eighteenth century. Reconstruction of prehistoric life is based primarily upon archaeological investigations, with additional reference to palaeo-environmental and ethno-historical information. PREH2004 describes archaeological finds throughout Australia during the Pleistocene and Holocene. Much of the unit focuses on the way prehistoric humans exploited their environment, especially their economy and their impact on the landscape. Claims for demographic change and the development of social and economic complexity are also examined. Because the archaeological study of human remains provides important information about the physical and cultural evolution of Australian Aborigines, photographs of skeletons will be displayed and discussed. While the study of skeletal remains is an essential part of the evidence for Australian prehistory, some people feel uncomfortable viewing such material. Consequently, while students are encouraged to attend the lectures and tutorials dealing with skeletons, these classes are not considered compulsory.

    About AIPA
    The Australian Institute of Professional Archaeologists (AIPA) was founded in 1998 as a national organisation representing the interests of all professional archaeologists who work or are based in Australia. The Institute serves to provide a broad base for the promotion of professionalism in archaeology, irrespective of location, research discipline, employment basis or experience. AIPA aims to provide a general framework for the development of archaeology as a viable career option, without focusing on specific aspects or sectors of the profession, or detracting from the efforts of specialist groups representing those areas. AIPA seeks to provide a forum for debate on all topics concerning the practice of archaeology in Australia, and how it relates to political, social and technological developments at home and overseas. We are in the process of constructing this web site to communicate the aims, ethics, services and activities of AIPA to the archaeological profession, the broader heritage community and the general public. AIPA is important to all who:
    • have qualified or intend to qualify as archaeologists;

Much More than Stones and Bones Australian Archaeology in the Late Twentieth Century Hilary du Cros July 2002, $34.95, PB SUBJECT: Archaeology Australian History ISBN: STATUS: Available about this title There is much more to stones and bones than most people think. In this book, Hilary du Cros shows archaeologists at work in surprising and interesting ways, such as:
    * engaging in national politics to save ancient caves from being flooded by the proposed Franklin Dam in Tasmania;
    * consulting with indigenous groups over the reburial of human remains. The case studies raise important ethical issues such as conservation versus commercialism, science versus Indigenous self-determination, and popular access versus technical elitism. Much More Than Stones and Bones is a study of the context and development of Australian archaeology over the past 25 years. Drawing on a range of sourcesincluding mass media reports, film and radio documentaries, and the observations of participantsit provides insights into how we view our past, how information about the past is used, and how archaeology has contributed to an Australian cultural identity. about the author Hilary du Cros is a cultural heritage analyst and academic now living in Hong Kong. She is currently assisting UNESCO as one of its cultural heritage experts advising on projects in the Asia region. Her previous publications include Cultural Tourism: The Partnership between Tourism and Cultural Heritage Management with Bob McKercher, and Women in Archaeology: A Feminist Critique with Laurajane Smith.
