http://www.ahs.unimelb.edu.au/
Australian Historical Studies is a refereed journal dealing with Australian, New Zealand and Pacific regional issues. First published in 1940, it is now one of Australia's oldest and best known academic journals, receiving contributions from leading academics in the field. The journal welcomes contributions bearing upon any aspect of the Australian past, including the recent past. We value reflective comment on the recreation of that past in the present, in all its forms - heritage and conservation, archaeology, visual display in museums and galleries, oral history, family history and histories of place as well more academic studies. Contributions on significant historical subjects of general interest to the readers and practitioners of Australian history are also welcome. Australian Historical Studies is published biannually by the University of Melbourne in April and October each year and is supported by the Faculty of Arts. It is also supported by the Faculties of Arts of Monash University, La Trobe University, Victoria University of Technology and the Faculty of Art, Design and Communication, RMIT. Articles, reviews, books for review and related correspondence should be sent to the Editor at the address below. The Editorial Board gratefully acknowledges the generosity of its sponsors, Dr Anthea Hyslop and Mr Justice Mullaly.

The administration language will be English, contributions will be accepted in any language that can be conveniently reproduced. The design of the site will be kept simple to facilitate loading over slow Internet connections and will avoid the use of frames.

Power, Gender and Ethnicity in Archaeology.
What is Gender Archaeology? Gender Archaeology is one of the newest fields of archaeology. It deals with two topics.
1. Gender archaeology deals with the way women perform archaeology, their experiences, attitudes and ideas.
2. Gender archaeology deals with the inclusion of women in the archaeological record. Although from just reading this, gender archaeology seems incredibly sexist. Not only is it based on women, but it is done by women. However, gender archaeology is the response to the archaeology that was performed in the past. Past archaeology was performed almost exclusively by while middle class men. During the birth of archaeology, in the 19th century, it was seen that the roles of women in society, and therefore the roles of women in past societies, were unimportant in relation to that of the male. Thus the archaeological work revolved around the male in prehistory. Gender archaeology attempts to correct this. I go into more detail in my essay later on. Why Gender Archaeology?

General Research Interests: Areas of special interest include New World archaeology and ethnology, Old World Paleolithic, hunter/gatherer ethnology, Australian and Southeast Asian prehistory, ethnoarchaeology, lithic technology and cultural ecology. Recent studies have been concerned with the factors behind the origins and development of residential corporate groups.
Research Programs: Major research programs in the past ten years include the Coxoh ethnoarchaeology project in Chiapas, Mexico, and Guatemala, a study of famine responses in traditional societies, research into the conditions favoring competition and cooperation in traditional contexts, and a multi-year research project (1982-present) on residential corporate groups in B. C. as revealed through large scale excavations at the Keatley Creek site. Other work has been concerned with Paleolithic deity concepts and religion, and the status of women in hunter/gatherer societies. Both the Coxoh and Corporate group field projects involved field crews of SFU undergraduate and graduate students. SFU field schools were integrated into the Keatley Creek project in 1988 and 1989.
