Australian financial institutions and markets have close relationships with their Asian counterparts, but they are also closely involved with the financial systems of the USA and Europe. The Australian financial system is very open, and many foreign financial institutions have operations there. Australia went through an extensive deregulation of its financial markets in the early 1980s, resulting in strong growth both in its size and in its sophistication over the last decade and a half. The results of this growth include:
  • A stable banking industry with widespread offshore interests liquid financial and foreign exchange markets, closely linked with offshore markets . a wide range of heavily traded derivative products well regulated and liquid exchanges, such as the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and the Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE)

Australian companies shed thousands of jobs as economy deteriorates
By Terry Cook 17 May 2001 Use this version to print Send this link by email Last week Federal Treasurer Peter Costello seized on sections of the Reserve Bank of Australia's Quarterly Statement on Monetary Policy These pronouncements are in line with assessments by international financial agencies, including the International Monetary Fund. At the end of April, the IMF slashed its growth rate forecast for the Australian economy from 3.25 percent to just 1.9 percent, well below Costello's prediction last November of 4 percent. In response to the RBA statement, the Australian Financial Review The unemployment rate is now 6.4 percent with number of officially registered unemployed increasing by 38,200 to 670,800 during the month. The jobless figures rose in every state except Western Australia, reaching highs of 9 percent in Queensland and 9.2 percent in Tasmania.

Thursday, February 13, 2003 CBA executive given $152m payout A bad year for equities leads Australia's second-biggest bank to report a 48 per cent decline in its first-half net profit REUTERS in Sydney Next Story Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), the country's second-biggest bank, revealed an executive at its fund-management arm received A$33 million (about HK$152.11 million) when he resigned from the bank. The golden handshake is one of the largest in Australian corporate history and has fuelled debate about the value of high-ranking fund managers. The payout to the unnamed executive came as the bank reported a A$426 million writedown on its Colonial First State funds management and life insurance unit, which it bought for A$9.5 billion in 2000. "It is beyond the realm of what is defensible," Rex Burgess, banking spokesman for the Australian Shareholders Association, said. The bank reported a near 50 per cent fall in first-half net profit yesterday, taking a big writedown as tumbling equity markets stalled ambitious plans to drive growth through funds management.

JANUARY 28, 2003 BIG Four banking giant Westpac is to spend $200 million building a company-wide customer relationship and analytics infrastructure to underpin its Ask Once marketing slogan.
Called Project Reach, the program involves commissioning a massive Teradata datawarehouse, the expanded use of multimillion-dollar data mining tools from software house SAS, and the upgrade and extended use of front-office customer relationship management software from Siebel. The project's goal is to improve Westpac's "wallet share", acting chief technology officer Harry Wendt said. The bank wanted to increase per-customer revenue from its 7.5 million customers in Australia and New Zealand by improving servicing of existing banking needs and anticipating future needs, he said. The system would put a "single view" of cross-department customer data in front of staff to improve immediate customer servicing, and to create a warehouse of data that the bank could analyse to originate new business, he said. ADVERTISEMENT
Since the project began in September about 70 of Westpac's 1000 in-house information technology staff have been deployed full-time developing and deploying the Project Reach infrastructure.

Australia's RBA Interest Rates Unchanged

05/02/2003 02:29 PM Miranda Maxwell
Australia's central bank left the official cash rate unchanged for the eighth consecutive month, a decision widely expected against the backdrop of an uncertain global economic and political climate. The Reserve Bank of Australia held rates at 4.75 percent where they have stood since last June. As usual, it made no comment when leaving rates steady. However, economists, who had given only a 10 percent risk of a February rate move, will get an update on the bank's current policy thinking when it releases its quarterly statement on Monday. The RBA, which had previously held a tightening bias, was more dovish statement in November, saying the domestic economy would slow in 2003 and lowered its inflation forecast.

DRIVING TOWARDS FINANCE HUB Australia is racing to be a global financial centre in a world where technological development will overcome the need for trading floors as transactions can be done electronically.
Axiss Australia was created in August 1999 to promote awareness of Australia as a global financial service centre with competitive advantages such as a highly skilled workforce, a strong economy, a secure business environment, time zone advantages and advanced information technology. Australia is transforming itself from an agricultural and mining economy to a service economy. Ser-vices now account for 79% of the total economy. The financial and insurance sector alone contributed 7.1% of GDP in 1999-2000. Joe Hockey, the minister for financial services and regulations, said technology was shrinking the world and removing the geographical disadvan-tage Australia had been perceived as facing. “Australia, which has changed some policies, should have a chance to be part of the Asian time zone, a significant global zone” in addition to the United States and Europe.

ECONOMY RECOVERS AS GDP GROWS
Australia’s economy rebounded from the brink of recession to record healthy growth of 1.1 percent for the March quarter this year. After contracting 0.6 percent in the December quarter from the previous three months, Bureau of Statistics data showed strong household and government spending had pushed the economy back into the black. Instead of recession, economic growth for the full year to March now stands at 2.1 percent. A second consecutive quarter of negative gross domestic product (GDP) growth would technically have given Australia its first recession for a decade and dealt the government a painful blow on the countdown to an election due by the this year. It has had the threat hanging over its head since December quarter GDP was dragged into reverse by a slump in the housing industry caused by the introduction of a new goods and services tax (GST) last July.

How money is created in Australia :
Simply explaining how the Australian monetary system could better serve Australia's people.
We have all heard it said that "money is the root of all evil" and probably thought that was a bit of an exaggeration. But when we understand how money is created in the modern world we can then understand the main cause of many major problems: ever increasing taxation; pensions disappearing; inequitable distribution of wealth; inflation; national debt; currency crises and devaluations; recessions; depressions; and even the failure of government in a democracy to govern in the interest of its electors.
Money was invented to be a tool for facilitating trade, but has now become a tool used by the rich to govern the world. If you have any doubt about that, please read on.
National Debt:
We've all heard of the Third World's debt crisis, of hopelessly poor nations unable to pay their debts, and of the human suffering and environmental consequences of their desperate predicament. But did you know that powerhouse of the world economy, the United States of America, is also in debt...
