With military action underway in Iraq, we understand that many Australians may be concerned about what impact military action may have on their safety and security. It is particularly important in this environment that Australians closely monitor the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade 's country-specific travel advisories for latest advice on a country's security environment. This advice is kept under constant review, and is updated as developments affecting Australians or Australian interests warrant. Country-specific travel advice and the general advice for Australian travellers can be found at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website We would also encourage all Australians to register their presence overseas through the online registration site.

The Big Echo
BROADCAST: 23/11/2002 Now to our Friday forum and tonight we're joined by the the expatriate journalist, John Pilger. Mr Pilger is here, partly to promote his latest book "The New Rulers of the World" and to lend his voice to the anti-war movement. "There is no war on terrorism", Mr Pilger writes, "it is the great game speeded up. The difference is the rampant nature of the superpower, ensuring infinite dangers for all of us". After the October 12 terrorist bombings in Bali, he wrote that Australia's close alliance with the US since September 11 and what he called, "the bellicose language of Bush, Blair and Howard" had placed the citizens of their own countries at risk. Evans admits to affair with Kernot
BROADCAST: 04/07/2002 The former foreign minister and deputy Labor leader Gareth Evans has admitted he had an affair with former Democrats leader Cheryl Kernot. The admission contradicts his denial in Parliament in 1998 of a relationship with the woman he helped recruit to the ALP. On a day of frenzied media attention, Cheryl Kernot was neither seen nor heard. The attention wasn't only focused on the two people involved, the media itself has been accused of salaciously delving into the private lives of public office holders. [ AUDIO, TRANSCRIPT

    Australia This Minute: Background
    What is Australia This Minute
A project by ACS members to help the community to document Australian culture on the World Wide Web, and as a supplement to the Government's "Australia on CD" project. In the 1995 Australia Day Message the Governor-General asked all Australians to consider the social equity issues of the InfoBahn (a copy of the speech was distributed on the Internet by the ACS, with the permission of Government House). These issues were detailed in the ACS's submission to the Government on the InfoBahn: " Vision for a Networked Nation While the people of other nations wait for their Government to lead, Australians get on and do it themselves. In this spirit fits well with the organised anarchy of the Internet. To harness this spirit Australia This Minute (ATM) is a project for a community based on-line Internet multimedia guide to Australian culture. Many people now have the ability to publish multimedia on the Interent, using the World Wide Web. Its not difficult and its fun (see http://www.tomw.net.au/

    Prime Minister on Federation pilgrimage
The Minister for Arts and the Centenary of Federation, the Hon. Peter McGauran MP, will join with more than 260 people in a major religious event involving leaders of a number of Christian denominations. The Centre was established in Canberra in June 1998 in collaboration with Charles Sturt University as a focal point for Christianity in the 21st Century. Mr Howard will receive a pilgrim staff from a young person who has recently returned from an overseas pilgrimage. The celebration will be conducted along the Pilgrim Walk in a three-stage ceremony: Birth of the Pilgrim Walk, Shared Pilgrimages and New Horizons. “The Pilgrim Walk is an expression of the belief that all experiences of life are embraced by faith,” Executive Director of the Centre, Reverend Dr David Millikan, said. “The Pilgrim Walk is a place where all Australians can reflect and meditate on the experiences of life, issues of health, struggle, gratitude, history and the state of Australian life.” Dr Millikan said the original vision of the Centre was laid down in November 1996 at a ceremonial gathering of the former Governor-General, The Hon. Sir William Deane, Professor Lowitja O’Donoghue and The Right Reverend Bishop George Browning as a place to celebrate and nourish the spiritual journey of all Australians.

European Higher Education Area Commission proposes five European benchmarks for education and training systems Responding to the challenges set by the Lisbon European Council in March 2000 of making Europe the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010, the European Commission and the Member States are working on the definition and implementation of joint objectives for education and training systems. The Commission has recently proposed five European benchmarks for education and training. Commissioner Viviane Reding said they will help to measure progress and support the exchange of best practices and peer reviews in order to reach the Lisbon target. The proposed benchmarks are that, by 2010: - All Member States should at least halve the rate of early school leavers compared with the year 2000, to achieve an EU average of 9% or less.
    - All Member States will have at least halved the level of gender imbalance among graduates in mathematics, science and technology, whilst securing an overall significant increase on the total number of graduates compared to 2000.
