Margaret Seares article,
The Australian
, 7 May 2001 Globalisation of Trade and ... Arts Journal The following article by Margaret Seares, Chair of Council, appeared in The Australian on 7 May 2001, page 13.

Anyone who believes that local content on Australian television is a simple issue had only to read The Australian last Friday to see that it is a complex one warranting extended public debate.
The Managing Director of the ABC, Jonathan Shier, quite rightly highlighted the fact that much that passes for 'local content' is simply locally badged 'global' (read American) content. Sigrid Thornton complemented Shier's comments by highlighting the crucial role creative local content plays in reflecting to others and ourselves what it is to be Australian.
There is a further dimension to local content, and that is the contribution content regulations and the resulting Australian productions on our airwaves have made to the lifeblood of our artistic life. There is a high degree of crossover of activity within the cultural industries that is often unrecognized by policy makers. Actors work for stage and screen; musicians write for concert hall and screen/radio; writers publish for the book market and write for the screen; visual artists create works across the spectrum.
This is essential if we are to maintain a vigorous Australian culture in our small marketplace. The economic situation of creative artists and producers of cultural content is precarious, and very sensitive to changes in any part of the market. There is concern that loss of local content regulation will almost inevitably see a reduction of the creative and financial rewards for artists, with a resulting negative impact on while the vigour and viability of Australian culture. For Australia's artists the impact of a changing marketplace is even more significant than for those in similarly populated countries in Europe or Asia, where touring to other marketplaces is comparatively inexpensive and easily facilitated and hence artists are less dependant on income from multiple sources in their home country.

Australians are warming to unions: survey
By Paul Robinson, The Age, 23 July 2001. Australians are developing more positive attitudes to trade unions with more now committed to joining a union compared with two years ago. This follows years of sharply declining union membership, which fell from about 45 per cent of workers in the 1980s to about 24 per cent today. That trend was reversed earlier this year when more than 25,000 new members, almost all women, were logged by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Che Guevara lives on, if not in our hearts at least on our chests
By Rachel Roberts, Sydney Morning Herald, 15 March 2002. Che Guevara is displayed everywhere, printed over khaki, red and rainbow-coloured T-shirts. it invokes our deeply rooted romantic understandings of revolution: our concepts of intellectualism, political defiance, liberation and, ultimately, martyrdom. Why has this image captured the imagination of the urban professional middle classes?
