Australian Rivers and Lakes Australian Population On the 2 nd July 2002 the Australian population is projected to be 19,701,170. With the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimating the following growth record:
    • one birth every 2 minutes and 10 seconds, one death every 3 minutes and 55 seconds, a net gain of one international migrant every 5 minutes and 50 seconds leading to an overall total population increase of one person every 2 minutes and 38 seconds.

    Indigenous Population
The actual the size of the indigenous population before European settlement was unknown, however educated indicators state it declined dramatically under the impact of new diseases, repressive treatment, dispossession, and social and cultural disruption and disintegration.
In recent times however changing social attitudes, political developments, and a broader definition of Indigenous origin have all contributed to the increased likelihood of people identifying as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin. The Australian Bureau of Statistics believes these changes have reflected in the large increases in the number of people who are identified as Indigenous in each Census, increases in excess of those which can be attributed to natural increase in the Indigenous population. The current indigenous population is placed at approximately 427,000.

Civilians or military personnel with appropriate qualifications are eligible to apply for postgraduate research degrees in Geography and Oceanography at University College, ADFA. Indeed, within the School there are excellent facilities and support for research, not least in the credentials of our academic staff. Three research degrees are offered: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Science (MSc), Master of Arts, Honours (MA Hons). Research activities in the School cover a diverse range of topics and methodologies with projects carried out both within and beyond the Australian continent. Three main fields of study can be identified - human geography, physical geography, and physical oceanography , though there is a common emphasis on empirically based research either with a fundamental theoretical objective or an applied objective. Remote sensing techniques and geographic information systems are also used in a number of the School's research projects.
Human geography is the study of people-environment interactions at a range of scales. Students wishing to undertake a human geography research degree at ADFA enjoy a wide range of research opportunities, similar to that provided at other Australian geography departments. Masters or Doctoral students do higher degrees by thesis only, and topics chosen are by no means restricted to defence related issues. Current staff have expertise in the following aspects of human geography: Cultural Geography, Social Geography, Historical Geography, Transport Geography, Development Studies, Economic Geography.

Disciplinary Mergers within Australian Academic Geography A ProgressReport. This trend is unique to australian geography departments.
    http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/geography/conference/special_session2.html
Disciplinary Mergers within Australian Academic Geography:
    A Progress Report
Within the disciplinary flux currently being experienced in Australian universities, Geography has experienced a persistent restructuring towards incorporation into a bi-disciplinary or multidisciplinary departmental structures. Of the 17 single-disciplines undergraduate based departments in the pre-Dawkins universities, only seven now remain labelled as single-discipline geography departments: Adelaide, ANU (Faculties), Macquarie Human, Macquarie Physical, NSW, Sydney and WA. Almost all of these seven have initiated "non-geography" programs or are likely to be restructured. This distinctive Australian trend merits close scrutiny. Some obvious questions are:
    • What circumstances led to this significant restructuring? To what extend did it occur through disciplinary initiatives versus external pressures, and at what level of acceptance? Why uniquely in Australia? Is this revelatory of the status and character of Australian academic geography, or some wider disciplinary flux peculiar to Australian universities, or, perhaps both? What have been the immediate outcomes?
