http://www.pastiche.org/wiki/AustralianGeography
FrontPage RecentChanges RandomPlaces RandomPage ... CharlesObservations I made this post to a mailing list a few years ago while trying to describe Australia to a group of Americans. Australia is a continent just a little smaller than the USA. It is divided into six states and two territories. Imagine a rectangle, longer than it is tall. Divide that rectangle pretty evenly into three vertical strips. The left-most strip is "Western Australia". That's where I grew up. We were the last state to be founded, so we just grabbed all of the country that hadn't already been taken by anyone else, except for the Northern Territory, which we just didn't bother with. We ended up with a lot of coastline, a lot of desert, and luckily we also managed to score a whole heap of gold, coal, iron-ore, and all those other lovely things you blow holes in the ground for. Western Australians tend to consider themselves as being completely separated from the rest of the country (known dismissively as "The Eastern States"), and has the strongest secessionist movement. Perth isn't quite the asshole of the world - that honour goes to Adelaide. This, however, still means Perth is on the world's left arse-cheek.
