Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said it was inappropriate to play cricket in Zimbabwe and welcomed England's decision to ask the International Cricket Council to move its February 13 game from Harare to South Africa due to security concerns. "We don't want to see our great cricketers used as pawns by President (Robert) Mugabe in a propaganda campaign," Downer told parliament. "It is quite undesirable for World Cup cricket matches to proceed in Zimbabwe." Australia's foreign office has warned of likely violent protests at the matches and urged Australians to steer clear. The Australian team decided at a meeting with Australian cricket authorities in South Africa on Tuesday that it would go ahead with its February 24 match in Bulawayo as the political situation was not bad enough to jeopardize its safety. Australian captain Ricky Ponting said he and his team, the defending world champion, trusted the cricket authorities to make the correct decisions.

Substantial oil and natural gas deposits lie under the Timor Sea between Australia and East Timor. The fate of tens of billions of dollars of revenue - and the quality of life for East Timor¹s present and future generations - depend on a fair boundary agreement. If the currently disputed boundary were drawn according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea - the prevailing law on such matters - most, if not all, of the natural resources under debate would fall within East Timorese waters. But Australia has chosen not to play fair. Instead of resolving the issue through neutral international mediation, the Australian government has resorted to strong-arm and delaying tactics. In March 2002, it unilaterally withdrew from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ICTLOS), the mechanisms normally employed to resolve such territorial disputes.
