News April 4, 2003 AIG survey bolsters industry optimism
Predictions of strong growth in heavy industrial and non-residential construction in 2002/03 and 2003/04 have been strengthened by the Australian Industry Group ’s (AIG) October 2002 construction outlook survey results.
In collaboration with the Australian Constructors Association, the AIG surveyed 100 leading construction companies, which collectively employ almost 30,000 people. Combined these companies have a turnover of $11.5 billion, representing a quarter of total industry activity.
The survey results reveal a projected 11.8 per cent growth in non-residential construction in 2002/03 and 11 per cent in 2003/04, stemming from projects already getting underway or in the advanced planning stages.
The results have also highlighted the shift from public to private sector initiated infrastructure projects with the private sector leading the industry’s market share over the past three years.

News April 4, 2003 Research shows bullish future for non-residential property
Forecasts of strong performance in the non-residential construction sectors through to 2005 are encouraging news for the property industry generally and and the Australian economy, according to management consultancy CMR.
Peter Galvin, the firm’s managing director, says research from Westpac, the Australian Industry Group and Chesterton International give reason to be optimistic about non-residential property in the next few years. “In addition to these forecasts, our own observations of the various property sectors around Australia support the view that there are good times ahead,” Galvin notes. “We have observed significant optimism in non-residential construction and CMR is confident the industry will continue to strengthen.”
A recent Ashe Morgan Winthrop survey (cited by Chesterton International) suggests that now is an astute time to acquire property assets with some 75 percent of the 600 professional investors surveyed indicating an intention to do this.

The Challenge For Australian Industry
06 August 2001
Australia needs a plan for the nation says ACTU President Sharan Burrow. At the heart of this, an industry plan must drive the generation of jobs, demand the skill base necessary for the 21st century, and create the productive wealth on which a cohesive, inclusive and just society can depend. Thank you for the invitation to speak here today. Renewing the nation's agenda is a critical discussion for Australia.
Australia needs a plan for the nation. At the heart of this, an industry plan must drive the generation of jobs, demand the skill base necessary for the 21st century, and create the productive wealth on which a cohesive, inclusive and just society can depend.
The Coalition Government has no such plan.
Our key competitors including the United States and Japan, and smart countries like Finland, are now investing more than three times as much as Australia, as a proportion of GDP, on future industry growth. Since the Howard Government came to office, Australia has spent between $40 billion and $60 billion less than the OECD average on education and innovation (Chifley Institute 2001). The human consequences are already being felt. In the eight months to May this year, 58,000 full-time jobs disappeared from our economy. The Government's own leading indicator of employment has shown five consecutive months of decline.
Contrast this picture with the position of the ACTU and unions. We are also vitally interested in jobs and investment, for this guarantees a dignified life for working Australians and their families.

We need to be a whole lot more than a smart buyer of technology. We have to invest in our ideas and export our innovative products."

    CRCs save Australian industry millions
    - Call to increase Government investment in CRCs
The research done by Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) across Australia is saving our industries millions of dollars and making them more competitive. CRCs operating in all industries - from aeronautics to food packaging through to the racing industry - are producing new technologies and innovations to save money. Savings are gained through innovations that result in faster more efficient production techniques, reduced damage to transported products, and decreased problems like disease affecting agricultural production or breakdown of manufacturing equipment. "Australia is more likely to reach its innovation targets and move forward into a "new knowledge-based economy" if it increases its funding for the CRC Program, as recommended recently by the Government's Chief Scientist," he said. The Federal Government has invested $1.5 billion in the CRC Program in the 15 years from 1991. Another $4 billion has been invested from industry, other government agencies, and research and educational organisations.

Australian Industry to Reap Savings from eProcurement Duncorp will offer total Purchasing Solutions through agreement with PurchasingNet Adelaide, Australia (February 27, 2001) Duncorp Pty Ltd., a leading procurement consultancy in Australia, has signed an agreement with PurchasingNet, an award-winning e-procurement software provider, to offer end-to-end operations and technology purchasing solutions to its clients. Duncorp selected the PurchasingNet e-Procurement platform because of its ease of use and rapid ROI. The installation was completed in a record time of five days and Duncorp expects its clients to reap large savings from e-procurement. “We were searching for an eProcurement package that was not only reasonably priced for those wanting to install it in-house, but one that could be accessed on-line from an Application Service Provider. As many of our clients are in the mining and exploration industry, easy remote access was an important consideration. PurchasingNet-SQL fulfils all these needs and will bring considerable cost and time savings to our clients," states Graham Duncan, Director/Principal Consultant of Duncorp. "Moreover, PurchasingNet-SQL is user friendly and is a comprehensive suite of software developed by purchasing practitioners. It resolves the marketplace dilemma by including a module that can easily convert client and supplier catalogues from just about any format to usable web-based catalogues. Using this software, clients would not have to join a specific marketplace, but can cost-effectively put their existing trading relationships onto the web."
