The Academy Editions of Australian Literature based in Canberra, Australia, are a series of classic Australian texts made available in electronic form for the literary scholar. The Editions assume a conservative model of reading - that the texts were intended to be read sequentially, and are still most successfully read in that way. We do not believe that by encoding the texts electronically we are developing fundamentally new methods of cognition, erasing Gutenberg, or establishing world peace and democracy in the late capitalist era. However, electronic presentation offers the scholar powerful opportunities for circumventing the limitations of the unitary version, and the Academy Electronic Editions allow the juxtaposition of all lifetime states of the text in both searchable text and digitized image forms as well as a critically-edited version.

    What's On

Monday, November 5, 2001 AUSTRALIAN LITERATURE GATEWAY OPENED The launch of AustLit: Australian Literature Gateway marks a new era for research and discovery in Australian literature. Did you know that:
    • Patrick White has been the subject of over a thousand critical articles and reviews?
    • Judith Wright's 'Woman to Man' is the most anthologised poem in Australian literature?
    • John Clarke uses more pseudonyms than any other contemporary Australian writer?
The AustLit Gateway is a unique service offering answers to these and many more questions relating to Australian literature. It offers libraries and researchers a single entry point to authoritative, constantly updated information on more than 40 000 Australian authors and more than 360 000 works of Australian creative and critical literature. The University of Western Australia is a partner in AustLit with eight other Australian universities and the National Library of Australia. The University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy leads the project. The AustLit Gateway is one of the largest humanities projects ever funded in Australia. Funding has included $1 million from the Australian Research Council as well as $2 million from the partner institutions in cash, and in kind.
