GAVAN'S AUSTRALIAN MILITARY LINK'S
I did 20 years in the Australian Regular Army and a tour of Vietnam in 67-68 with "A" Squadron of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, so I have a interest in all things Military. That is why I have done this and the following pages.
They are not personal page's about me, but page's with links to all those URL's that are put together by Veterans that want to tell their story to the world.
Most of these links are from Australian sources with a few about the modern Australian Defence Forces and a couple sneaked in from American Veterans. Enjoy. Welcome to Diggerz.Org, the totally unofficial web site for diggers and ex-diggers of the Australian Army.

ACCESS TO THE OFFICIAL AUSTRALIAN UFO FILES
Prior to 1982 civilian UFO researchers only had a confused and vague picture of clandestine official involvement in Australia. In the face of the lethargy in the RAAFs replies to serious enquiries, I stepped up my efforts at diplomatically trying to get direct access to the RAAF UFO files. It probably surprised me more than anybody else when the RAAF finally agreed to permit me to examine their files. The extent of access was unprecedented in the history of the Australian UFO controversy. From the first of my visits to the Russell Offices of the Department of Defence, in Canberra, on January 11th, 1982 to my last in June, 1984, I was able to scrutinise the extent of official UFO investigations in Australia. For the first time a detailed "inside" picture was revealed of RAAF investigations.

Air Force, Army, Navy Expanding Use of NI LabVIEW to Determine Safe Aircraft Operation
NEWS RELEASE Oct. 15, 2002 National Instruments (Nasdaq: NATI) announced today that the Australian military is saving two-thirds on measurement component costs using an NI-based virtual instrumentation system to test its entire fleet of Black Hawk helicopters. The system, which also slashed testing time from months to weeks, has proven so successful the Royal Australian Army, Air Force, and Navy soon will expand their use of NI LabVIEW software and PXI hardware to determine safe operation of other types of helicopters.
The NI-based system, known as the Airborne Data Acquisition and Recording System (ADARS), identifies safe landing procedures for its Black Hawk helicopters by measuring vital information such as rotor speed, air speed, aircraft position, and engine torque as pilots land in various weather and sea conditions. During test landings onboard amphibious troop transport ships, the system analyzes and logs flight data from the helicopter's navigation and avionics systems. Military officials then use this data to determine proper landing techniques that all Black Hawk helicopter pilots should follow. The test program has been so successful, the military plans to build additional ADARS units to determine landing procedures for its fleet of Sea King and Sea Hawk helicopters.

Since 2000, the Royal Australian Air Force, Army, and Navy have used National Instruments LabVIEW software and PXI hardware to help determine procedures for landing the military's fleet of 40 Black Hawk helicopters on the decks of troop transport ships. The NI-based system has saved the military time and as much as 66 percent on test equipment costs, and based on this recent success, the Australian military plans to expand the use of NI LabVIEW and PXI on additional types of helicopters.
The NI-based system, known as the Airborne Data Acquisition and Recording System (ADARS), has identified safe landing procedures for its Black Hawk helicopters by acquiring and analyzing vital information such as rotor speed, air speed, aircraft position, and engine torque as pilots land in various weather and sea conditions.
During test landings onboard amphibious troop transport ships, LabVIEW provides a single, tightly integrated software development environment for both acquiring data and performing complex inline mathematical analysis. Specifically, LabVIEW performs some heavy number crunching, applying third-order calibration polynomials to each of ADARS 40 analog inputs and to the calculations of derived parameters by mathematically combining the inputs using control margin algorithms.

Australia's Military Involvement in the Vietnam War
By Brian Ross
This article is intended to provide an overview of Australian military operations in Vietnam, commencing from the deployment of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in 1962 until 1969, when Australian forces began withdrawing, consistent with the Nixon Doctrine of phased withdrawal from the mainland of Asia and the policy of Vietnamization.
Australian Army Training Team Vietnam
Australia's initial commitment to supporting the American stance in Vietnam consisted of the deployment of a team of military advisers. On 26th July, 1962, the Minister for Defence announced Australia's intention to send 30 instructors to the Republic of Vietnam, 4 going to the Military Aid Council Vietnam (MACV) Headquarters in Saigon, 22 to regional locations in the Hue area and 4 to Duc My.(1) This team would be headed by Colonel F.P. Serong, previously the Commanding Officer at the Jungle Training Centre, Canungra, Queensland and would fall under the command of the Australian Army Forces, Far Eastern Landing Forces Headquarters in Singapore.(2) The AATTV arrived in the Republic of Viet Nam in August, 1962. AATTV advisers served with ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) units, including infantry, artillery and armoured divisions, independent regiments in the I Corps area (the northern province of RVN),regional and provincial headquarters, the Viet Nam Police Field Force, US Special Forces, Montegnard Special Forces and CIA operations.(3) with the escalation of Australian forces in Vietnam in 1966, Australian advisers also served with 1 Australian Task Force (1ATF) at Nui Dat.

Top Australia and the Military From the outset, military history has been intermingled with the history of Australia and its European inhabitants. In fact, Australia owes its discovery to a lull in military activity in Europe. When British and European armies were not fighting each other, military leaders often found themselves on half pay, and in many instances, they were sent on exploration missions throughout the world. Just as on the battlefield, national pride dominated these ventures as the war spilled over into the competitive world of exploration. Historians are also quick to point out that new lands were not the only things at stake and that scientific conquest had also become a goal by the late 1700s. Australian's have only to recall that Captain Cook was initially sent to view an eclipse and that his discovery of New South Wales came as an added reward during his return voyage. Rivalry between France and Britain featured heavily in the British decision to occupy New South Wales in 1788. It featured again in the 1820s, when the western third of the continent was added to Britain's Empire. However, Australia's greatest involvement with the military establishment was still to come and was brought about by the American War of Independence. Until then, Britain had used America as a dumping ground for her convicts but soon after she lost that battle she had to turn her attention to the newly discovered New South Wales. A colony was established along military lines and a great proportion of its original settlers had convict or military backgrounds.

Howard confirms Australian military commitment to Iraq war
Prime Minister John Howard has confirmed Australian troops will join a US-led war against Iraq. Mr Howard announced the move after briefing Coalition MPs on Cabinet's decision. "The Government strongly believes that the decision it's taken is right, it is legal, it is directed towards the protection of the Australian national interest, and [I] ask the Australian community to support it," he said. Mr Howard says Australia's military chiefs have been informed.
Transcript of Prime Minister John Howard's news conference, March 18, 2003
The Government has authorised the chief of the Australian Defence Force, General [Peter] Cosgrove, to place the Australian forces already deployed in the Gulf region as part of any US-led coalition operation that may take place in the future directed in accordance with existing authority under United Nations resolutions to disarm Iraq. This decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting this morning following a further telephone discussion between myself and President Bush.

Labor continues to allege deceit over Australian military commitment
By Geoff Kitney, Political Editor February 13 2003 The Federal Opposition pressed on yesterday with its attempt to prove that John Howard has been dishonest over Australia's military commitment to the looming war with Iraq, despite a new row with the US ambassador to Australia. There were calls yesterday for Tom Schieffer to be recalled to Washington and for him to apologise after he stepped up his attack on Labor's stand against any US-led attack on Iraq not sanctioned by the United Nations. The ALP leader, Simon Crean, telephoned the ambassador in hospital, where he is being treated for complications after an appendicitis operation, to demand a face-to-face meeting to discuss highly critical remarks he made in an interview published in The Bulletin Mr Schieffer, a friend of George Bush, accused Labor of ending bipartisan support for the US alliance and attacked Mr Crean for failing to establish a closer personal relationship with members of the Bush Administration. Mr Crean said the ambassador's comments were an unprecedented interference in domestic politics by a foreign diplomat.

Suffering Violence Amid The Culture of Silence
By MICHAEL WARE As a result of the scandal the 50,000-strong Australian Defence Force was stood down (for the first time in its history) on Feb. 5 for a two-hour lecture on military justice; an internal ADF inquiry was launched; the military police were reorganized to make them more effective; fresh investigations into 3RAR's commanders began; the ADF legal office is being reviewed; and a new Inspector General's post is to be established. The inquiry found a "culture of silence"-imposed with violence-kept details of the bashings from leaking out, and a "culture of ignorance" had allowed the brutality to flourish. The ADF has been widely commended for taking action to address the larger structural problems. Still, the inquiry condemned the military for keeping the affair secret for two years, and criticized junior defense minister Bruce Scott, who had been "less than forthcoming" in parliament. The 3RAR affair has been damaging to the defense force at a time when officer recruitment is in decline -in spite of a costly advertising campaign. A former Federal Court judge, James Burchett, is due to complete the service-wide inquiry into the ADF by the middle of the year. One Air Force serviceman, who claims beatings plague his unit, told the Seven Network's Sunrise in an e-mail last week that "the military justice audit was a sham," set up to appease the media. "There is a lot more to this than the general public realise," he wrote. Military insiders, however, are confident that nothing as severe as the 3RAR incidents remains to be discovered.
