Up to 15,000 kangaroos in a military base in Victoria will be killed, Australia n defense department announced Tuesday.
The Australian Associated Press reported Tuesday that the Defense Department has gotten the permission to cull the animal.
Experts believe an acceptable number of kangaroo per square kilometer is 100. But about 80,000 kangaroos are estimated to be living in the 42,000-hectare (420 square kilometers) military training area for artillery practice and tank training.
Culling kangaroos will be carried out by professional shooters and in a humane way, the report said.
The kangaroo is deeply loved by Australians. The animal is Australia's national symbol and the country's national emblem shows its image. Because of heavy drought, too many kangaroos constitute threats to nearby farms, and they even stare on persons passed by.
Animal activists said they are prepared to stand between shooters and kangaroos if they deem the animals are being unnecessarily killed.

China backs Australian military intervention into East Timor
By James Conachy 24 September 1999 Use this version to print In the midst of frenzied diplomatic efforts by the Australian government to deploy its military into East Timor, President Jiang Zemin landed at Melbourne airport on September 6 to begin the first visit by a Chinese head-of-state. Though the United Nations East Timor ballot on autonomy could be raised in the future as a precedent for a similar intervention in Taiwan or Tibet, China proved to be extremely supportive of the dispatch of thousands of Australian troops to the former Portuguese colony. When the UN Security Council did vote on September 13 after Indonesia's acceptance of a UN force, China not only endorsed Australia's position, but also, after initial hesitation, agreed to its request for aggressive rules of engagement. China did not lend any support to Indonesian and Malaysian demands that Australia, still perceived in Asia as having links to the European colonial past, not lead the force. China Daily China's stance on East Timor is all the more note-worthy considering the September 2 speech delivered by Jiang Zemin in Bangkok, only days before arriving in Australia. In the keynote address of his state tour to Thailand, Jiang made a vitriolic attack on the NATO war against Yugoslavia and US foreign policy in general, saying:

Australian military readied to intervene in Indonesia
By Mike Head 8 September 1998 The Australian government, in the midst of an election campaign, is taking steps to prepare the armed forces to act quickly if the Habibie regime in neighbouring Indonesia calls for help with unrest generated by its food crisis. A spokesman for the Australian Defence Department confirmed to the World Socialist Web Site that personnel are being readied to assist the Jakarta government if requested. He refused to provide further details beyond the remarks attributed to a "senior official" by the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday. Later, in response to a written list of questions, the spokesman reversed himself and refused to confirm anything. According to the newspaper report, the hours of duty and crew leave arrangements for naval ships and Hercules aircraft are being monitored in the expectation that a request may come soon from Indonesia. "We are thinking about it [a possible request] and we are providing for it by keeping a sharp eye on our defence priorities," the senior official was quoted as saying.

    Introduction
In the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf War, the US and its coalition partners developed a containment strategy designed to curtail Iraq's military adventurism and to force Saddam Hussein to comply with United Nations Security Council Resolutions regarding Iraq's development of Weapons of Mass Destruction. As was evidenced by his recent speech to the UN General Assembly, President Bush has set in motion diplomatic and military preparations for an end to Saddam Hussein's regime. Detailed background to the UN-US-Iraq situation is contained in the e-brief ' Iraqi Precipice Nevertheless, the almost overwhelming momentum for war against Iraq suggests that a non-military solution will be hard to find. In this overheated environment, decisions about what sort of contribution Australia may eventually make to the war could be influenced by factors other than the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) strictly logical assessments. Furthermore, in the absence of a broad coalition, such as was forged for the 1991 Gulf War, the US may seek visible and substantial contributions from willing countries such as Australia. This could translate into much more generous logistic and other support than would otherwise have been the case and thus open a wider range of military options to the Government.

PROMOTION Gay activists in Australia have accused the military of ignoring the partners of gays and lesbians in the forces by denying them services available to the spouses of heterosexual soldiers.
Rodney Croome, the chairperson of the Tasmanian Lesbian and Gay Group said spouses of same-sex couples in the Australian military do not receive counselling or compensation when their partner is killed or wounded. He said the issue is very significant at the moment as Australia sends troops to the Middle East in the war against terrorism.
"The Government has remained indifferent to that issue and we think that's not good enough, particularly when the Government says we must support families and loved ones of all Australian personnel,"

ADI Limited has welcomed the decision by the Department of Defence to proceed with the purchase of ADI's Bendigo produced Bushmaster infantry mobility vehicle. "The decision will ensure Australia continues to benefit from domestic production of world leading military and specialist vehicles and that is a very good outcome for our Bendigo employees and the Bendigo economy," ADI managing director, Mr Jean-Georges Malcor said. "We are very pleased that we have the go-ahead to supply Bushmaster to the Army. ADI and the Defence Department, in particular the project office, the Defence Materiel Organisation and Army have worked closely to secure this successful outcome. "We are confident of producing a vehicle that will meet the Australian Army's reliability testing requirements and will prove to be an export winner for Australia. "There has already been some initial overseas interest in Bushmaster, particularly since it demonstrated its capabilities with the Australian Defence Force in East Timor.

SABRETACHE Vol. XXXVII - Jan/Mar 1996 - No.1 - page 44. This book is portrayed as a "landmark [which] explores the richness and diversity of Australian Military History", and it certainly goes a long way to achieving that lofty claim. With an impressive directory of contributors, the more than 800 individual entries cover a widely diverse range of subjects related to Australian military history. The alphabetically arranged entries vary in length and detail, from a few lines to several pages. While the majority of these are concerned with specific people, places or items of equipment, there are also 36 lengthy thematic entries, such as "Aboriginal Armed Resistance to White Invasion" and "Military History and Historians". All contain a wealth of information, and are supported by 100 photographs, most of which were sourced from the Australian War Memorial. The alphabetical entries and photograph captions are generally well researched, though occasionally suffer from minor errors. The captured A6M5 Zero fighter pictured on page 27, for example, has New Zealand Air Force markings, not Australian as stated, and the tank pictured on page 51 is actually a Vickers Medium Mark 2 (Special), not a Mark 2 as stated in the caption. The RAAC will doubtless be interested to learn that the Leopard tank replaced the Centurion from 1974 (the Leopard was ordered in 1974, but the Leopard AS1 actually started replacing the Centurion from early 1977 following the arrival of the first batch in late 1976). Likewise, that the M113 APC (sic) (presumably the M113A1 LRV or APC) is obsolete, despite the fact that the RAAC will be using them into the next century.
