A Brief Look at the History of Austrian Culture
Although Austrian literature and drama date back to the 12 th century it is best known since the classical period and the golden age of the Viennese popular comedy in the 19 th century. Around 1890 major changes took place in Austrian literature and since then Austria became a leading center of literature in German language and the world of Austrian literature since 1945 has been extremely varied. In 1905 he founded the celebrated Workers Symphony Concerts and in 1919 he was appointed Director of the 'Sozialdemokratische Kunststelle', which enabled him to develop a dynamic programme of artistic events. In a situation of increasing polarization between Right and Left, he promoted inclusive forms of a cultural activity. The esteem in which he was held by contemporaries is reflected in the collection of eighty-eight literary, artistic and musical dedications which was presented to him in 1924 on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday. This collection, which Bach brought with him to Britain, forms a unique time capsule of Viennese cultural life." e-mail

Prof. Receives Award for Book on Austrian Culture
By LINDSAY LIPPMAN

The Victor Adler Staatspreis, an Austrian prize for the best historical work, was recently awarded to Prof. Michael Steinberg, history, for his book Austria as Theater and Ideology: The Meaning of the Salzburg Festival.
Published in 1990 in the United States, Steinberg's book was published in German for the first time earlier this year.
Steinberg stated that he was "both pleased and surprised" to be the recipient of the award. In his book, Steinberg discusses the history and significance of the Salzburg Music Festival, the world's most famous music festival.
The Festival was founded in 1920 after the fall of the Austrian Hapsburg Empire. "The festival [was started] to show that Austria was still important and to show what Austrian culture was about," Steinberg said. In writing this book, Steinberg said that he sought to find out whether analysis of this one event, the Festival, could provide understanding about the relationship between Austria's culture and its politics. Though Steinberg's book was first published ten years ago, it has become more relevant to Austrian politics in recent years.

Description: The turn of the twentieth century in Germany and Austria was a highly troubled time and a highly creative one. People faced upheaval, change, confusion, and ambiguity in almost all areas of their lives – geography, politics, economics, technology, medicine, identity, and sexuality. Anti-Semitism and misogyny, for example, were simply a part of life and coexisted with Zionism and an active Women's Movement. Everyday concerns with such issues, as well as with the worker’s movement, increasing industrialization, and nationalism, are reflected in the artistic products of the time in ambivalent and complicated ways that we will describe and discuss. Art, literature, philosophy, music, architecture, and film not only reflected the thrills and trials of social, political, and cultural change but they themselves were also undergoing radical changes from within in genre and form.

What hobbies do many Austrians take interest in?
Austrians have many of the same interests as Americans. They love music, sports, shopping and other popular activities. Austrians often listen to popular American and European music, as there are few modern Austrian groups. Many Austrians take interest in German cultural activities, as they are similar people. Folk dancing is a large part of Austrian culture, and is a popular hobby for all ages. There are many types of traditional dance, in cluding the well-known waltz and polka. Many special ceremonial dances are practiced in groups, such as the "Schuhplattler", the "Perchtentanz", and the "Tracht." Participating in a band is also a popular hobby. Most towns have local brass bands which hold seasonal concerts (Vienna Online, 2001).

FOR AUSTRIAN LITERATURE

The Austrian contribution to modern German-language literature has been both rich and varied, embracing major novelists (Kafka, Musil), dramatists (Schnitzler, Bernhard), and poets (Rilke, Celan) of international repute. The outcome of an innovative form of cross-institutional co-operation, this exciting academic initiative will concentrate on Austrian literature of the twentieth century, focusing above all on developments from 1945 onwards and taking as its figurehead Ingeborg Bachmann, whose poem 'Abschied von England' encapsulates the challenge presented by other cultures and the difficulty of comprehending them.
