Purpose
As one of the well-known schools in the 14-million metropolis of Istanbul, the major purpose of St.George’s Austrian School is to make a contribution to the Turkish educational system. Since the foundation of the School, there has been a will to mingle with other religions, especially with Islam, which is reflected in mixed classes of students from Muslim, Jewish and Christian backgrounds. As an Austrian institution in a foreign country, a further objective of St.George’s School is Austria’s representation in Turkey. By providing a tuition in line with Austrian educational concepts, St.George’s School represents a meeting place of both cultures and thus establishes a link between the Turkish and Austrian peoples. The special stamp issued in Austria to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the foundation of St.George’s School shows a bridge over the Bosphorus, connecting both continents. This bridge symbolizes the very vision of St.George’s School of providing for a cultural background based on understanding and acceptance of different cultures and religions.
Location
St.George’s Austrian School is located in the heart of Istanbul, Karaköy, at the crossroads of business and tourist life. The school is several minutes away on foot from the ancient Galata Tower, the historic Golden Horn and the Galata Bridge, which unites old and new Istanbul.

by Gerhard Atschko and Christian Fridrich 1. Procedure during the analysis All school books for geography and economics available and approbated in Austria for the school year 1999/2000 for the schools of the ten to fourteen year olds (Hauptschule and lower grades of the allgemeinbildenden höheren Schule) were analysed with regard to the dealing with ethnic minorities. During this process the only thing which was observed were the chapters, in which issues of minorities were mentioned. On the following pages those chapters are mentioned, in which ethnic minorities are dealt with. Whenever one of the minorities dealt with in the minority-project is mentioned, the according paragraph is in bold type. Those chapters will be further analysed in the course of the minority-project. Furthermore the titles of the school book series, the publishing company and the authors as well as the date of approbation of the single volumes will be given. Within the following two years the school book analysis will also be added with further volumes of – still – incomplete school book series that are to be published in the future. 2. Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies, Austria's 1955 State Treaty declared the country "permanently neutral" as a condition of Soviet military withdrawal. Neutrality, once ingrained as part of the Austrian cultural identity, has been called into question since the Soviet collapse and Austria's increasingly prominent role in European affairs. A prosperous country, Austria joined the European Union in 1995 and the euro monetary system in 1999. Geography [Top of Page] Location: Central Europe, north of Italy and Slovenia

The stated primary mission of the California State Universities, as stated in the Master Plan created by the Donahoe Higher Education Act of 1960, is "undergraduate and graduate instruction through the master's degree in the liberal arts and sciences and professional education, including teacher education." Instruction, thus, is a central concern of faculty in the Department of Geography at California State University, Long Beach. Much of the research activity in the Department is targeted to maintaining faculty currency for the benefit of their students (and much of it provides direct financial support for our undergraduate and graduate students). The faculty of the Department endeavor to be effective teachers, and the purpose of this page is to showcase some innovative instruction by our faculty.

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS The Slovenes, a Slavic people, migrated southwestward across present-day Romania in about the sixth century A.D., and settled in the Julian Alps. They apparently enjoyed broad autonomy in the seventh century, after escaping Avar domination. The Franks overran the Slovenes in the late eighth century; during the rule of the Frankish king Charlemagne, German nobles began enserfing the Slovenes and German missionaries baptized them in the Latin rite. Emperor Otto I incorporated most of the Slovenian lands into the duchy of Carantania in 952; later rulers split the duchy into Carinthia, Carniola, and Styria (see fig. 2). In 1278 the Slovenian lands fell to the Austrian Habsburgs, who controlled them until 1918. Turkish marauders plagued Carinthia, Carniola, and Styria in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The Slovenes abandoned lands vulnerable to attack and raised bulwarks around churches to protect themselves. The Turkish conquest of the Balkans and Hungary also disrupted the Slovenian economy; to compensate, the nobles stiffened feudal obligations and crushed peasant revolts between 1478 and 1573. In the tumult of the sixteenth century, German nobles in the three Slovenian provinces clamored for greater autonomy, embraced the Protestant Reformation, and drew many Slovenes away from the Catholic Church. The Reformation sparked the Slovenes' first cultural awakening. In 1550 Primoz Trubar published the first Slovenian-language book, a catechism. He later produced a translation of the New Testament and printed other Slovenian religious books in the Latin and

How did the Österreich Lexikon, written in German (the national language of Austria) mainly for an Austrian readership, become the Encyclopedia of Austria on-line information retrieval system written in English for a global audience on the worldwide web? The Österreich Lexikon was originally a 2-volume book published to celebrate 1000 years of the existence of Austria. And this is what it is about: a detailed collection of knowledge about Austrian history, culture, politics, geography, society over the last 1000 years - and sometimes more! The book, as well as the on-line version in German, contains everything that Austrians collectively find interesting about their country - past, present - and sometimes future. It was put together as a reference work for Austrians (mainly) who want to find out more about various aspects of their country:
    • Things they learnt at school and have now forgotten, Places they went - or are going to - on holiday, When did the Austrian Empire really begin?

It has a total area of 83,859 square kilometers, about twice the size of Switzerland and slightly smaller than the state of Maine. The landlocked country shares national borders with Switzerland and the tiny principality of Liechtenstein to the west (200 kilometers together), Germany (784 kilometers) and the Czech Republic and Slovakia (568 kilometers together) to the north, Hungary to the east (346 kilometers), and Slovenia (311 kilometers) and Italy (430 kilometers) to the south. The westernmost third of the somewhat pear-shaped country consists of a narrow corridor between Germany and Italy that is between thirty-two and sixty kilometers wide. The rest of Austria lies to the east and has a maximum north-south width of 280 kilometers. The country measures almost 600 kilometers in length, extending from Lake Constance on the Austrian-Swiss border in the west to the Neusiedler See on the Austrian-Hungarian border in the east. The contrast between these two lakesone in the Alps and the other a typical steppe lake on the westernmost fringe of the Hungarian Plainillustrates the diversity of Austria's landscape. Seven of Austria's nine provinces have long historical traditions predating the establishment of the Republic of Austria in 1918: Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tirol, and Vorarlberg (see

GEOGRAPHY Geographically, Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the heart of South-Eastern Europe, bordering on Croatia in the North, South and West, and Montenegro and Serbia to the East. It covers an area of 51,197 sq. km, with a coastline of 24.5 kilometer extending along the Adriatic sea. Together with some other South Slavic lands, Bosnia was first represented on the geographical maps made by the ancient Greeks. This is the case with other ancient maps such as ‘Tabula Europe’ by Claudius Ptolemaus. In the first century of the new era there appeared the first maps of Roman provinces, including the above mentioned territories, prepared by Roman cartographers. They were incomplete and not very accurate. These geographical maps feature the Sava, Kupa, Una, Vrbas, Drina and Neretva rivers. In the mediaeval period, advances in map-making were achieved by some Arab cartographers, such as al-Idrisi for example, from the year 1154. The maps of this period contained new elements including some Balkan countries as well as Bosnia itself. During the periods of Byzantine and Hungarian supremacy in this part of South East Europe, the Bosnian borders were also shown, albeit within larger territorial units.
