ABOUT AUSTRIA
Geography Austria is located in Central Europe. It is an predominantly mountainous country with an area of 83,855 km2. Eight countries namely Italy, Switzerland, the Principality of Liechtenstein, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia form the Austrian border. Vienna is the capital of Austria that lies on the Danube River and is partly surrounded by the hills of the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald).
  • Vienna (Wien) Salzburg (Salzburg) Tyrol (Tirol) Vorarlberg (Vorarlberg) Styria (Steiermark) Burgenland (Burgenland)
Population Austria's population is growing toward eight million. Twenty percent of the total population (1,54 million people) is living in Vienna. Ninety-three percent of Austrians are German-speaking. However the country has a diverse ethnic mix that includes six officially recognized ethnic groups: Croats, Czechs, Hungarians, Roma/Sinti, Slovaks and Slovenes. Concerning the religion we can state that although about 78 percent of the population is Roman Catholic, there are eleven other officially recognized religions in Austria. Climate Austria's climate is generally moderate and mild but varies from the Alpine region to the eastern plain. Summer can be hot and long with average summer temperatures that range from 20°C to 30°C. The average winter temperatures are around 0°. Snow on the mountains in spring and autumn is not uncommon. In Vienna itself you can enjoy the very mild climate, a gentle breeze, fresh air produced by the surrounding Wienerwald.

HERODOT - Using the Web in teaching geography
Project action: MINERVA

ID number: Project start: Duration: 12 months Project end:
Theme(s):
Networks and projects supporting the ODL community
(theme explanations are available)
Description:
Summary:

HERODOT aims at the provision of a web-based distance learning service for geography teachers. The main objective is the delivery of new means for teaching geography at secondary schools. In this project the need for Information Technologies in the education field will be addressed by using virtual media as a supplemental tool for geography teachers. Major outcomes and benefits of the HERODOT project are the concept of a European GEO-School-Web-Server ( http://geo.eduhi.at ) and the development of on-line-resources for geography teachers and students in various languages. However, each partner will be able using materials developed by the other European project partners. Specific Target Groups and Expected Benefits: Specific target groups and expected benefits: Trainers, managers, teachers and students; Their skills in the techniques and methods for ODL in geography will be enhanced in a European context. It is not possible to estimate an exact number of people who will benefit by HERODOT at this time, however it will amount from some hundreds up to a thousand during the first year and even more during the second year. It is believed that the scope of HERODOT will reach international recognition. However, a first step will be the development of a European-wide network.

    The basis for this product has been an ongoing project to catalog rare and valuable maps - long libraries' step-children - that are held by German libraries. Beginning in 1985 with three major libraries (in Berlin, Munich and Göttingen), the project was to provide a union catalog to maps from 1500 to 1850, particularly single maps, facsimiles and atlases. The CD-ROM provides a searchable database of 300,000 entries, including approximately 170,000 single titles. It is a unique and invaluable resource for the map historian.

    INTRODUCTION
    Background: Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies, Austria's 1955 State Treaty declared the country "permanently neutral" as a condition of Soviet military withdrawal. Neutrality, once ingrained as part of the Austrian cultural identity, has been called into question since the Soviet collapse and Austria's increasingly prominent role in European affairs. A prosperous country, Austria joined the European Union in 1995 and the euro monetary system in 1999.

    [Research focus and targets / Aesthetics Political Grammar Images of Areas Picture Postcards ... Staff The project ‚Imagining Cultural Landscapes‘ was completed in December 1997 and the results were presented to the public.
    Research focus and targets The project focused on ways of perception of landscapes and their cultural and social conditions. Different ideas and forms of understanding of landscape, especially as expressed in images and texts, were investigated. This included aesthetic questions and theories of the perception of nature and landscape as well as the development of models and different, sometimes competing demands on landscape. The discussion of the theoretical conceptual approach was based on the theory of knowledge. The level of the social and cultural construction of different forms of perception of landscape was treated in two ways: The first approach focused on political interrelations in the construction and functionalisation of landscape, while the second sociological theoretical approach to spatial images investigated the appreciation of landscape as implied in image constructions. The dimension of social communication of landscape perception was treated by using picture postcards. Another dimension containing very concrete social and political actions with consequences for landscape development was addressed by models for regions. The dimension of the experienced changes of landscape based on individual case studies in the micro-region was directly related to social and individual habitats.

    This is a translation of excerpts from the article written by Bronislaw Gustawicz for the gazetteer Slownik geograficzny Królestwa Polskiego . Gustawicz, a teacher at St. Anne's Gimnazjum in Kraków, wrote this about 1880; so it should offer insights into the state of affairs in Galicia at roughly the time our ancestors were leaving it for America. Space limitations precluded printing the whole article much has been omitted. "Galicia, " the standard form in English, is used throughout; in the original the author used the form "Galicya, " and one also sees "Galicja " (common in Polish) and "Galizien " (the German version). The name comes from the Latinized form of Halicz , a town in Ukraine, in the I Ith-12th centuries capital of the Duchy of Halicz and a military center in the 14th-17th centuries.
