Language An obvious reason to show this film to students of German is the frequent use of German dialogue in The Third Man. Unlike the overwhelming torrent of German that cascades over students in an all-German film, the German in Der dritte Mann comes in measured doses dispersed throughout the film. I am also a firm believer in exposing students to real German and its dialects, including Austrian German. The authentic German spoken by the Austrian actors in The Third Man German dialogue from the film.) With a little advance preparation, students can learn some German from

Geography
Here I will talk about the city I live, hoping that some of you come and pay me a visit. Trieste is a beautiful city (~250 thousand inhabitants) in the north-east of Italy, near the border with Slovenia and easily reachable from Venice by train or car. There is an airport too, in a small village nearby called Ronchi dei Legionari. Its most flourishing period was during last century, when Trieste was the most important harbour of Austrian empire. Many buildings remind that happy age, and in particular Miramar Castle, which was the residence of Franz Joseph's brother, the unfortunate Archduke Maximillian. A kind of melancholy for this Austrian period is still present in the inhabitants: a sort of remembering of a past golden age. The cause of it partly due to trade and wealth decrease after World War I, when Italy annexed the city. Nowadays the most important activities of Trieste are connected with science: a part from the university and the astronomical observatory , there are an important centre of theoretical physics , the international school of superior advanced studies . The synchrotron machine and an area of important research in advanced materials and space optics.

Austria is located in a temperate climatic zone with a Central European climate influenced by the Atlantic climate. The four seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) each have typical temperature and climatic characters. Due to the topographical diversity and the relatively large West-East expanse, there are three differentiating climatic regions: East: Pannonian climate with a continental influence – low precipitation, hot summers but only moderately cold winters. Of Chinese and Malays or the Versatile Scholar T he versatility of Blumentritt is revealed at first sight in his works which are still preserved. As a twenty-five-year old teacher of German, geography, and history at the classical secondary school, he publishes in 1879 the Tratado Anlonimo , about an uprising against Charles V of Spain. The work of an unknown contemporary, translated from Spanish by Blumentritt, gives an account of the uprising of the Junta Santa, the holy alliance in Segovia, on July 29, 1520. This association, the "comunidad" (with its members, the "comuneros") plots one of the first movements of the middle class against the nobility of Spain. Don Carlos, regent of Castille and Aragon, and born in Flanders, had incurred the enmity of the Spaniards when he apportioned the highest offices to his Flemish favorites, who, in addition, unexpectedly received defense aid for the comuneros in the person of the Walloon Archbishop of Toledo and Primas of Spain. Everything comes to a confrontation, when, after the death of Emperor Maximilian I on June 28, 1520, the twenty-year-old prince is crowned emperor (Charles V). The

Introduction SOM 1 SOM 2 SOM 3 SOM 4 Shooting on Location in Salzburg
    - Robert Wise, director of SOM
The Mirabell Gardens were one of the
locations used for shooting in Salzburg.

Making Your Own Geography A William Wyler had previously selected, he soon realized that his vision of the film was very different from Wyler's and for the most part he would have to find his own locations. The movie was shot at numerous locales in and around Salzburg, but Wise was often forced to create his own Austrian and local geography. For instance, Villa Trapp in nearby Aigen, the actual von Trapp home, was deemed unsuitable for the movie. After efforts failed to obtain the rights to film at first-choice Leopoldskron castle (just outside of Salzburg), an alternate site known as the Bertelsmann property was chosen to stand in for the grounds of the von Trapp villa. Yet another site at Schloss Frohnburg was chosen for the villa's exteriors. In the final version of the film, the scenes shot at the two locations were edited to make it appear as if everything was happening in one place. Learn more about the making of this film in The Sound of Music: The Making of America's Favorite Movie by Julia Antopol Hirsch.
