Autoimmune disorders
Definition
Autoimmune disorders are conditions in which a person's immune system attacks the body's own cells, causing tissue destruction.
Description
Autoimmunity is accepted as the cause of a wide range of disorders, and it is suspected to be responsible for many more. Autoimmune diseases are classified as either general, in which the autoimmune reaction takes place simultaneously in a number of tissues, or organ specific, in which the autoimmune reaction targets a single organ. Autoimmune disorders include the following:
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus . A general autoimmune disease in which antibodies attack a number of different tissues. The disease recurs periodically and is seen mainly in young and middle-aged women. Rheumatoid arthritis . Occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the tissues that line bone joints and cartilage. The disease occurs throughout the body, although some joints may be more affected than others. Goodpasture's syndrome . Occurs when antibodies are deposited in the membranes of both the lung and kidneys, causing both inflammation of kidney glomerulus (

PRESENTATION OF DEPARTMENT OF DERMATOLOGY POSTDOCTORAL TRAINING PROGRAM TO THE JOINT COMMITTEE ON HOUSE STAFF AND POSTDOCTORAL PROGRAMS
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DERMATOLOGY RESIDENCY PROGRAM
  • OVERALL GOAL Provide residents with the appropriate environment where they can acquire a comprehensive knowledge of Dermatology for the purpose of fulfilling the requirements of the American Board of Dermatology for certification. GENERAL GOALS
  • The main thrust of the training will be devoted to acquiring expert clinical skills, during the delivery of dermatological care in the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center facility, to our patient population which ranges between newborns and geriatrics.
  • The resident physician should provide care for patients whose conditions range from outpatient treatable diseases to those requiring inpatient dermatological care.
  • The residents will have primary responsibility to the patients they hospitalize, and they will participate with their attending on consultations on patients admitted in other services who have dermatologic manifestations.
  • Residents will be encouraged to utilize basic science resources in the development of an understanding of the mechanisms of diseases and their management.

Onset of the disease in adults is usually between the ages of 40 to 60 years, although it can occur at any age. The etiology of RA remains unknown. Metabolic and nutritional factors, the endocrine system, geographic, psychologic, and occupational data have been extensively studied with no conclusive findings. It now appears that an unknown antigen initiates the autoimmune response resulting in RA. Autoimmune Disorders and Hepatitis C
By Liz Highleyman Print this page Many of the conditions associated with chronic hepatitis C are autoimmune disorders, in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues. There are more than 80 different conditions related to autoimmunity, and they affect almost every organ and system in the body. Some extrahepatic (outside the liver) autoimmune conditions seen in people with HCV include antiphospholipid syndrome, cryoglobulinemia, lichen planus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, Sjögren’s syndrome, and thyroiditis. Other autoimmune conditions — for example multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, and Crohn’s disease — do not appear to be more common in people with HCV than in the general population. Most serious HCV-associated autoimmune conditions occur during late-stage hepatitis after the liver has sustained extensive damage. A majority of people with chronic hepatitis C never experience serious HCV-associated autoimmune conditions. What Happens?

    - An Interview with Leonard H. Calabrese , D.O. -
    Leonard H. Calabrese
Services such as CNSV-net are clearly the shining light of providing information. December 2001 CNSV-net recently had an opportunity to talk with Dr. Leonard H. Calabrese of The Cleveland Clinic about Central Nervous System Vasculitis. We are grateful that Dr. Calabrese took time from his busy schedule to answer our questions. CNSV-net: Thank you, Dr. Calabrese. We appreciate that you're sharing your expertise and insights with us. Dr. Calabrese: Thank you. CNSV-net: CNS vasculitis affects people in different ways depending in part on what part of the brain is affected. But, there are some commonalities: confusion, difficulty in word finding, susceptibility to over-stimulation, visual problems and fatigue to name a few. Can you describe for us the essence of CNS vasculitis? What is it that's happening to the brain, and how does that show up for a patient? Dr. Calabrese: The essence of CNS vasculitis is simply a damaged brain by lack of blood flow. The fundamental process is no different than the common stroke. However, it is often much more diffuse than a stroke which is isolated to a single part of the brain. As in people who have strokes, much of the symptomatology the complicated package of symptoms that people with CNS vasculitis carry with them for months to years, or even for the rest of their lives, is due to residual damage, which must be differentiated from ongoing disease activity.

    Scleroderma
    Definition
Scleroderma is a serious, progressive disease that affects the skin and connective tissue (including cartilage, bone, fat, and the tissue that supports the nerves and blood vessels throughout the body). Scleroderma is also frequently called systemic sclerosis. Description
Connective tissue is found throughout the body. It is a fibrous tissue produced by special cells called fibroblasts. Many cells of the immune system exist within the connective tissue. Connective tissue supports all of the structures of the body, including the skin, the organs, and all of the body's blood vessels and nerves. Collagen is a type of protein fiber present in connective tissue. In scleroderma, collagen is over produced and is defective. Collagen then accumulates throughout the body, causing the hardening (sclerosis), scarring (fibrosis), and the damage characteristic of scleroderma. Because collagen is found so widely throughout the body, the effects of scleroderma are almost always widespread. Scleroderma occurs in all races of people all over the world. Patients are most often diagnosed between the ages of 30-50 years old. Women are three to four times more likely to suffer from the disorder. Young Afro-American women and Choctaw Native Americans have particularly high rates of the disease. Although some cases of scleroderma clearly run in families, most cases of scleroderma occur without any known family tendency for the disease.
