But these were not the worst disasters of the century, either in the power of the events or in the loss of life and property that they caused. "The costs of natural disasters lives lost, homes destroyed, economies disrupted have skyrocketed in this century, as the world's population has grown and has moved onto areas that are vulnerable to earthquakes, hurricanes, landslides, and other natural hazards," said USGS Director Chip Groat. "But there is reason for hope. By understanding how and where these natural events occur, so that we can build and live safely on the Earth, and by providing real-time information about floods, earthquakes, and other hazards, so that we can respond effectively when disaster strikes, the USGS is helping build stronger, safer communities that are resilient to natural disaster." Landslides Landslides, lethal mixtures of water, rocks, and mud, generally are triggered by earthquakes, volcanoes, or weather events. The two largest landslides in the world this century occurred at Mount St. Helens, Washington, in 1980 and at Usoy, Tajikistan, in 1911. At Mount St. Helens, a moderate earthquake caused roughly 1.7 cubic miles of rocks and mud to break free and slide down the side of the volcano, releasing pent-up pressure to produce the major eruption of May 18. Although this was the largest landslide recorded in historic time, fewer than 60 people were killed because most residents and visitors had been evacuated. The Usoy landslide, also triggered by an earthquake, moved 1.5 cubic miles of material and built a dam 1880 feet high (half again as high as the Empire State Building) on the Murgob River; the dam still impounds a lake nearly 40 miles long. This landslide took place in a sparsely populated area and thus caused few deaths.

I was climbing with my friend Paddy McCarthy, an experienced and capable mountaineer. We climbed together frequently, and had made an unsuccessful attempt on Alexander's Chimney (one of the faces of Long's Peak) two weeks before. On this occasion, the day dawned gray and miserable. However, we were only an hour or so away from the climb, so we decided we should go up to the base of the chimney "to take a look." The chimney's steepness, and the absence (we thought) of any obvious collecting areas for snow at the top of the route suggested to us that, despite the poor weather, the avalanche hazard would be fairly low. We reached a point on the lower east face at which it was possible to climb up easy (fourth class) but somewhat loose terrain for about 80 feet to the base of the chimney. Another party had set up in the best spot, well to the left of the chimney. The only alternative spot that offered the chance of belay was very close to the start of the chimney and just off to the right. As we debated the wisdom of proceeding with the climb from our perch, a small but heavy avalanche of dry snow blasted down the chimney, covering me in white powder. I looked to Paddy and commented that if something like that came down while one of us was leading on the steep ice, it would be very easy to be knocked off balance and fall. I said, "Let's go home," and we began packing up to leave. During this time, at least one more similar avalanche came down on us, and, seeing our decision, the other party decided to leave, too. They yelled up to us, "You guys can have it!"

They induce feelings of amazement and fear, and provide examples of courage, folly, and tragedyin a sense, all the aspects of great drama. Disasters are media events and frequently inspire Hollywood as most recently evidenced by the movies Twister Dante's Peak , and Volcano . For any or all of these reasons, disasters are also popular topics at the reference desk. Yet good, comprehensive, timely tools to answer "disaster" questions are few to nonexistent. The Internet has become one of the best reference tools available for questions relating to disasters. We highlight here some of the premier Web sites on disasters that are useful in a reference setting. While there are many sites with information about specific events (e.g., the Mt. St. Helens eruption), our focus is on those that provide a broad view of disasters. By Tom Knudson Bee Staff Writer Truckee resident Kathy Kessler's love of the outdoors turned tragic Monday when she and six other skiers died in an avalanche during a backcountry skiing adventure on a remote mountain in eastern British Columbia. It was one of the worst avalanche disasters in Canadian history. The victims were three Canadians and four Americans, one of whom was legendary snowboarder Craig Kelly, 36, a four-time world champion from Washington state living in British Columbia. Another Californian, Dennis Yates, 50, of Los Angeles, also died. The drama spilled into Tuesday with more than a dozen avalanche survivors including five of Kessler's friends from Truckee pinned down by bad weather in a remote chalet with two Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigators near the site of the accident. Late Tuesday, a helicopter ferried the shaken skiers to nearby Revelstoke, west of Banff, Alberta.
