Welcome to Modelaircraft.org, today is Thursday, April 03, 2003 AMA Announces New Liability Insurance Carrier (Added 3/25/03) The AMA Executive Council on Monday night, March 24, reviewed several liability quotes offered for consideration. They approved an offer from Westchester Surplus Lines Insurance Company, AM Best Rated as A IX. This coverage is identical to the expiring 2002 policy with another company. The annual premium as compared to last year went up by 70%. There will be no lapse in liability coverage for clubs that have re-chartered. Also coverage will continue for additional insureds (site owners). The AMA Headquarters operations is focusing on getting various documents printed and customized for both club and property owners. Documents will be mailed as soon as possible. While you might experience a delay in receipt of the documents, rest assured that coverage is in force!

Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum Named Affiliate of Smithsonian Institution The Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum has been accepted into the prestigious Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program. Since the Smithsonian Affiliations Program was established in 1997, more than 90 cultural institutions in 32 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Panama have joined. The Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum is only the second institution in the state of Michigan to be named as an official participant in the program. Affiliate organizations must have goals compatible with the Smithsonian’s mission, and they must maintain the high standards of excellence that are synonymous with the Smithsonian’s exhibit and museum education programs. As an affiliate, the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum will retain its own identity, staff and governance as a private, non-profit institution and will receive no financial support from the Smithsonian. What it will receive is access to the more than 142 million objects in the Smithsonian’s collections, from spacecraft to American cultural artifacts to fine art.

Major Events in Coast Guard Aviation History December 17-Life-Saving Service personnel from Kill Devil Hills Life-Saving Station helped carry materials to the launch site for the first successful heavier-than-air aircraft flight by the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk, NC. The life-savers were John T. Daniels, W.S. Dough and A.D. Etheridge.
April 1-Second Lieutenant Charles E. Sugden and Third Lieutenant Elmer F. Stone received orders to attend aviation training at Pensacola Naval Air Station. August 29-Naval Appropriation Act of 1916 provided the authorization, but not the funding, for ten Coast Guard Air Stations to be located along the coasts of the Atlantic, Pacific, Great Lakes, and the Gulf of Mexico. October 28-Second Lieutenant Norman B. Hall was ordered to the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company to study aircraft engineering and construction.
March 22-The first Coast Guard aviators graduated from Pensacola Naval Aviation Training School. Third Lieutenant Elmer Stone became Coast Guard Aviator #1 and Naval Aviator #38.
24 March-The first Coast Guard Air Station was opened at Morehead City, NC. Operating with six Curtiss HS-2L flying boats borrowed from the US Navy, the air station was closed after fifteen months due to lack of funds.
