The Topic:
Aztecs Easier - Aztecs were a wandering Native American tribe who came to Mexico during the 13th century. There they built a great civilization including cities, pyramids, and temples. In 1519 Spanish conquistadors arrived in Mexico and defeated the Aztecs.
Harder By the 1400's and into the early 1500's, the Aztecs had established one of the most advanced civilizations in the Americas. Some of their cities at that time were as large as any in Europe. Aztec peoples practiced a religion that affected every part of their lives. To honor their gods, they constructed towering temples, huge sculptures, and held ceremonies that included bloody human sacrifices. The Aztec empire was destroyed by the Spaniards, who conquered it in 1521. But the Aztecs have made a lasting mark on Mexican culture.

and The Ancient History of Basketball
The Aztecs of Mexico, although not very tall invented back in the 16th century what we know as basketball today. They named their game ollamalitzli. The game was played by trying to put a solid rubber ball through a stone ring placed high at one end of the court. Unlike today, they had no rules. It was brutal. You could kick, hit, gouge, pull hair, trip, and anything else you can think of to your opponents. A score of one point one the game. The winning team was rewarded by getting to take the clothes and jewlery right off the spectator's backs. (Duh? Why go to the game?)
The captain of the defeated team got it worse. His head was cut off. Recently archaeologists learnt about the Aztec games of ollamalitzli. Up until now, James Naismith had been considered the man who invented basketball. And at the time he did, he had never even heard of the Aztec's ollamalitzli version. So he is considered by many to be the inventor of Modern American Basketball as we know it today. And here is a kinder, gentler version of how it all began. James Naismith a PE (Physical Education) instructor at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Mass. Today that is Springfield College. He was also the newest and youngest teacher there. One very cold December day in 1891 he went to the school's gymnasium where he found two of his other PE teachers not too happy. It seems the school's president had TOLD them to come up with a game that students could play inside on cold days. The teachers were not doing too well with coming up with something that was inside and physical (not like chess or something).

Welcome to our Ancient History Projects on the Web
Graphic based on a lithograph "Side View of the Great Sphinx,
Pyramids of Geezeh" by David Roberts Introduction: Grade Five and Six students from The International School of Amsterdam have worked on several investigative projects in 1996-97 and 1997-98. In Spring 1997 grade six students spent a month studying Ancient Egypt . They worked in pairs or in threes studying different aspects: the geography, the history, religion, the social structure and daily life and technology. Following the Egyptian project, students chose another civilization they wanted to learn more about. The choices included the Romans Greeks Celts Vikings ... Incas , Aztecs, Chinese , Etruscans, Maoris , and North American Indians. The groups then made a presentation to their classmates using multi-media authoring tools and in August 1997 a number of their projects were added to our Grade 6 Social Studies Web Site with links to other Internet resources and related school projects.
