Attorney General Goes Back to School as Part of National Consumer Protection Week
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
February 16, 2000 Attorney General J. Joseph Curran, Jr., announced today that, in conjunction with National Consumer Protection Week (February 14-20), he will be issuing the "Tuff Customer" quiz to students across Maryland. The quiz was designed to educate high school students about issues such as how to shop for a used car, how to use a credit card wisely, and how to avoid job-related scams. In addition to visiting three schools in Maryland, General Curran's Consumer Protection Division has sent copies of the quiz and a teacher's discussion guide to every public school in the state in an attempt to further educate as many young consumers as possible. "It is imperative that we take a leading role in the education of young people about so many of the scams and pitfalls that they will face in the coming years," General Curran said. "This quiz is just one tool that effectively sends the message of consumer awareness that will hopefully get them started off on the right foot." General Curran will visit the following schools on THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2000:

Checklist for Parents Designed to Help
Ease Back to School Anxiety The short summer months will begin to wind down soon and school buses take the place of car rides to the beach. It’s time for children to head back to school. Just as the fall approaches so does back-to-school anxiety, which can affect the entire family. Between kids fearing they’ll miss the bus and won’t make new friends and parents feeling stressed about hectic mornings and carpooling chaos, how can anyone get excited about the first day back to school? "The beginning of the school year brings many worries for children that can lead to sleepless nights and stomachaches. Forgetting one’s lunch or not being able to find the bathroom in time can be quite traumatic for children," said SmarterKids.com’s Director of Education Susan Graham Parents can set the tone for a successful transition from summer to the new classroom by proactively addressing their children’s concerns. Below are nine tips to help ease your child’s back-to-school anxiety. A Week Before School Begins
