Starting school and children's health By Dr. Trisha Macnair Infections Vaccinations Headlice and scabies ... Behaviour and development In the past couple of weeks across the country there's been a buzz of anticipation among parents of small children, either about to start school for the first time or moving up into a new class. At last someone else is going to help out with the endless job of entertaining and stimulating them (I speak as a mother worn thin through the Summer holidays by two extremely active children!) But of course there are plenty of worries too about packing your precious offspring off to school. You want them to be happy and confident in their new environment, and you want them to be safe. So along with the military planning of uniforms, pens, bags etc, a little thought to their health is important. Infections Preventing the spread of infection Keep children away from school while they are unwell - it's probably the last place they want to be anyway.

FAX:561- 355-3038 PALM BEACH COUNTY—As the “kindergarten roundups” begin in county schools the Palm Beach County Health Department is reminding parents to get the immunizations needed for enrollment early.
This year, students entering Pre-K or kindergarten will need to have completed their shots for mumps, measles, rubella, tetanus, chicken pox, pertussis, diphtheria, polio, and hepatitis B. Health officials, aware that parents like to wait until the last minute, are looking for registered nurses willing to be trained and available to give shots during July and August, until school starts.
According to Immunization Nurse Supervisor, Barbara O’Malley, “We give thousands of shots during the back to school crunch. Having additional nurses available to assist is very important as we can accommodate more students and make sure they have their needed immunizations for enrollment.” Each year in Palm Beach County, over 95% of the school-aged children are current with their vaccinations at the time of enrollment.

Survival Tips for Parents Travelling to School Safely Hints for a Healthy Lunch After the long summer break, the first week of September can bring mixed emotions for parents and children alike, especially when children are entering the school environment for the first time or joining a new school. A pleasant start to school can help children feel good about themselves and create a positive association with the school setting. It will also make worried parents feel more at ease.
Survival tips for parents Allow time to shop for new clothes or uniforms and all the extra "bits and pieces" that your child needs for school such as a suitable school bag (preferably one that sits comfortably on their back) books, pens and, of course, a lunch box. Be enthusiastic about the upcoming change. If you are excited and confident, your child will be too.

Blue Ridge Family

Back to School Safety by David W. Fairbanks, M.D. Are playgrounds SAFEgrounds? Every year 200,000 kids suffer playground injuries serious enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room. Moms, dads and caregivers treat many more injuries, and even more go unattended. While scrapes and bruises are part of growing up, be assaults, head injuries and fractures should not be. How can I protect my child from injury? Starfleet's android, Lt. Commander Data, asked a child in Star Trek Insurrection , "I've wondered what it is like to be a child, how can you keep from falling down when the length of your legs is constantly changing?" The young man's answer was "Sometimes I do." We should expect some discoordination in our kids to lead to minor injuries. But most serious injuries are usually the result of poor judgement from stunts, which test the limits of common sense and gravity. While we can't often prevent these lapses in judgement, some simple precautions can prevent more serious injuries.
Encourage kids to wear helmets and protective gear for biking, skating, boarding, and climbing.

CHILDREN'S HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM
NATIONAL BACK-TO-SCHOOL KICK OFF
HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala, along with Attorney General Janet Reno, Education Secretary Richard Riley, and representatives of several national non-profit organizations, announced a national Back-to-School campaign today to enroll children in free or low-cost health insurance through the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). With the support of the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Justice, and Education, and national non-profit organizations including the United Way, today's announcement launched a campaign to raise awareness and enroll children in health insurance through CHIP and Medicaid in local communities this fall. Secretary Shalala also announced a $1 million radio campaign, funded by HHS, to promote these upcoming enrollment activities, scheduled from now until October 2. The Back-to-School campaign will include 45 outreach events in more than 25 local areas in partnership with local United Ways, schools, hospitals, community health centers, community-based organizations, and media outlets. "Access to health insurance is what families need to help ensure that their children grow up healthy and strong," said Secretary Shalala. "This campaign is one way that we are pulling together to help hard-working, low-income parents give their children quality health care through CHIP."

Back to School A little preparation gives you and your kids peace of mind as the big day nears by Robin Hoogshagen, R.Ph. Summer is winding down, the days are getting shorter, and back-to-school sales are hitting stores across the country. It's a time of year that many children approach with excitement and trepidation the new school year. But there are many things parents can do to help ease the stress. Remember, kids may be facing new classmates, new teachers, and maybe even a new school. A little planning can go a long way toward helping children feel prepared to face new situations. Make sure all immunization and checkup requirements are met Many schools require that children have an annual physical and proof of current immunizations before allowing them to join classes. Pediatricians' and physicians' offices are inundated with last-minute calls from harried parents trying to squeeze their children in. Make it easier on you and your children by scheduling appointments early.

Healthy food may be the last subject on students' minds by the time lunch arrives. With the demands of school, lunch can sometimes be a matter of grabbing anything edible. But students require much more, said Sandy Procter, a Kansas State University Research and Extension nutrition educator and registered dietitian. School Breakfast is a Smart Start Eating breakfast remains the best way to start a day, said Sandy Procter, a registered dietitian and nutrition educator with K-State Research and Extension. "Bar none, breakfast has everything to do with daily success," Procter said. "It hits nutritional groups early in the day that otherwise may not get eaten any other time through the day." A range of foods can fulfill those nutritional requirements. "Breakfast gives a full shot of nutrients through enriched cereals and fruit juices," she said. "These simple foods are packaged right to give a full burst." "Lunch is an important part of the day and makes a difference," Procter said.

by Lucas Shivers
School-aged children need at least nine hours of sleep each night to ensure good health, said Mike Bradshaw, Kansas State University Research and Extension safety specialist. "Lack of sleep causes many problems within the school environment," Bradshaw said. "Students can be too sleepy to learn. This contributes to a negative overall performance." According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, many signs point to sleep problems:
  • frequent awakening during the night;
  • talking during sleep;
  • difficulty falling asleep;
  • daytime sleepiness;
  • nightmares or bed wetting;
  • teeth grinding or clenching; and/or
  • early waking.
Although children carry much of the responsibility for their evening schedules, Bradshaw said parents must establish clear guidelines and enforce them to help children reach nine hours of sleep. "Parents can help children prioritize to keep them from starving themselves from sleep and help them find a balance," he said. "Setting a routine with consistent times of going to bed and getting up can be a first step." About a month before school starts, Bradshaw recommends a transition into a school-like sleep pattern. To help minimize common sleep problems, he said parents should develop consistent bedtime and sleep routines for children.

population Schools across Ontario are now open again. Back-to-school is also a busy time for the Muskoka-Parry Sound Health Unit. When the schools open, a wide variety of programs kick into gear to maintain the health of this large segment of the population. Students who have reached sexual maturity are a particular focus. It is an emotionally charged topic. Issues of morality, parental protectiveness, community standards, and the need of adolescents to assert their independence all complicate the simple, age-old search for love and partnership. It is also a public health tinderbox. A wrong decision can spell a lifetime of suffering for an individual; it can also lead to other wrong decisions that will spread suffering to others. The health unit keeps in close contact with the student population to provide information that will help these young adults make healthy sexual choices. When it comes to sexually transmitted diseases, the work of public health units seems to be paying off in Ontario. On the other hand, sexual activity among younger adults is climbing, and the highest rates of increase are among the youngest groups.

E-Mail This Story Print This Story Easing Those Back-To-School Jitters BALTIMORE, 4:35 p.m. EDT August 28, 2001 The days of summer are quickly coming to an end. Children will soon be trading sun and swimming for school and studying. With the change in routine, it is also a time when children may experience stomach aches and sleepless nights thinking about the first day of school. "The vast majority of children have some anxieties about going back to school," says Linda Grossman, M.D., the director of behavioral and developmental pediatrics at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children. "Some children act cool, but when they are settled and comfortable in a new classroom, they will then admit they were anxious at the beginning of the year," adds Dr. Grossman, who is also an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Grossman says not knowing what to expect can make children fearful. The less information or knowledge that they have, the more likely they are to let their imaginations run wild. Dr. Grossman suggests easing a child's back-to-school jitters by taking them to the school for a tour before school starts. "If you can get inside, check out the classroom and try to meet the new teacher," adds Dr. Grossman.
