SEPTEMBER 2002 Better late than never, isn't that what they say? Back to school for the kids took more time and effort out of me than I'd planned and this was the first time I've been able to sit down and put any work into this. As we roll into September it will be impossible, regardless of what country you live in, to avoid the television coverage of the one year anniversary of September 11th. Many people I know are choosing o not turn on their television sets that day and will instead remember in their own way with their families. There is no right and wrong and as with the actual event, people will deal with the memories in their own way. This month brings two incredibly simple lunch box ideas for the back to school kids. Take a look and get some simple new ideas! This month we have an article on a great new product that is on the market today. This isn't a huge company but a man with a great idea. It's marketed for children but I think it would be a great idea for anyone in the family . Do check out the section on Medi-Kid Safety Insoles and see what I mean.
As usual, I'd like to take this moment to welcome all of our new subscribers and bid a 'welcome back' to our returning ones.

Poll your class for ideas on how they can Pay it Forward as a group, or as individuals, and build a project around one or more of their ideas. Check with local businesses for support. Many businesses will donate materials, expertise, and even employees to help with volunteer programs and projects. Remember to get permission / permits where required and focus on safety when implementing any project. Lower Grades: K-4 or 5 Cards:
Create cards to distribute to a retirement home, veterans center, children's hospital, geriatric wing at your local hospital, hospice, etc.
Use construction paper, glue, stickers, glitter, crayons, markers, scissors and/or any other suitable material. Cards do not need to be centered on a holiday. "Thinking of you" or "have a nice day" cards are a great alternative. Cards can be hand delivered by students when appropriate, mailed, or an educator or volunteer may deliver cards in bulk to the chosen institution. Help a Friend or Family Member:
Students look for a way they can help a friend or family member.

You got the jacket, the backpack, and the sneakers with the funky laces. Everything's in readiness for your child's return to the classroomexcept, perhaps, for one thing: his mind. Returning to school after a long summer vacation can be a major adjustment for young children, just like starting a new job or moving to another town is for adults. There are new routines and rhythms to get used to. There are new classmates and new teachers to size up. There's the not-so-simple matter of learning to sit still after months of climbing, biking, and swimming. Fortunately, parents can make the transition easier. A little preparation and a few simple exercises can help children get into shape, mentally and emotionally, for a new academic year. The good news for parents of young children is that most are already anxious for school to start by the time late August rolls around. The few who aren't so eager can learn to work through their back-to-school jitters, which are normal, especially for children who have moved to new cities or have undergone other disruptions.

Pepperidge Farm's Farmhouse Whole Wheat and Arnold's Bran'nola line come in a variety of textures for children (and adults) who don't like too much "stuff" in their bread. Lucio has always been a fan of baby carrots, and now I've sold him on the new bagged fresh sugar snaps as well.

BACK School Lunches
Pack the best of both worlds flavor and nutrition.
By Nancy Ross Ryan
School lunches may sometimes be a headache but they need never be boring. And your school-age kids will say thanks for the memories of terrific, exciting, surprising lunches both delicious and nutritious. With the Food Pyramid as a guide, creativity as a muse and wholesome convenience products as labor-saving devices, you'll be a hero (and we don't mean sandwich). Not your ordinary sandwich
Because sandwiches take center stage in the school lunchbox, all the more reason to make them more than S.O.S. (Same Old Sandwich). The sandwich offers the perfect opportunity to supply at least two servings from the bottom and biggest level of the Food Pyramid: the grains group. Think sandwich bread not just in white, but rye, whole wheat, multigrain, pumpernickel, sourdough, cinnamon-raisin and more. Beyond sliced bread there are Kaiser rolls, onion rolls, baguettes, whole-wheat hamburger and hot dog buns, rye buns and English muffins. Halved bagels and bialys make fine sandwiches. So does split focaccia. Pitas are perfect for stuffing, and flat breads such as lavash and flour tortillas make great wraps. The sandwich is also a wonderful way to add a serving from other levels of the pyramid: the fruit, vegetable and dairy groups, and the protein group that includes meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dry beans and nuts. A few sandwich ideas:
Stuff tuna or egg salad in a pita pocket with sliced seedless cucumber or lettuce.

Best in the Box - for Kid Appeal With school just around the corner, it's time to dream up creative ways to boost your child's lunch box interest. Here are some back-to-school ideas to prevent sandwich fatigue.
  • Roll up cold meat into cylinders with dipping sauce, veggies, crackers, soft bread sticks Baby Pitas, stuffed with cheese, popped into the microwave to melt before packing Pizza Quesadillas ; spread pizza sauce on a tortilla, top with cheese and another tortilla, brown on each side in a fry pan, cut in 4 and wrap in plastic wrap. Do this the night before. Wraps with fillings of their choice with shredded veggies tucked inside. Roll up tightly in plastic warp and refrigerate overnight. Leftovers are perfect - like chicken/rice dishes so is peanut butter spread on a whole wheat tortilla and wrapped around a whole banana If your children like Thai type food , try (hot or cold) rice or flour wrappers with leftover noodles, rice, meat and veggies with a peanut or sweet and sour sauce in a small separate container Hot food when heated in the morning will last until lunch in wide mouthed insulated thermos type containers or if a microwave is available at school, it makes variety that much easier - hearty soups, stews, chili, spaghetti and casseroles like mac and cheese, ravioli

Return to Crime Prevention Information For You MAKING SAFER SCHOOLS When crime, drugs, and violence spill over from the streets into the schools, providing a safe learning environment becomes increasingly difficult. More students carry weapons for protection. Gunfights replace fistfights. Many students must travel through gang turf or groups of drug dealers. Violence becomes an acceptable way to settle conflicts When this happens, children cannot learn and teachers cannot teach. Creating a safe place where children can learn and grow depends on a partnership among students, parents, teachers, and other community institutions to prevent school violence.
    • Find out how crime threatens schools in your community.
    • Take actions to protect children.
    • Promote nonviolent ways to manage conflict.
