A BOX OF DELIGHTS
Do the shelves of the toy department leave you uninspired? Are you tired of having your toy purchases dictated by the advertising on Saturday morning T.V.? Are you spending more for toys but finding your kids are enjoying them less? Then the time is ripe for you to create your own "box of delights". The possibilities for a unique and special gift are endless, bounded only by your imagination. In this article we will outline ideas for grouping toys, books and other items together to make delightful gifts that will fit any budget, big or small. Most of us begin our shopping for the right gift at the nearest toy store or book shop, but your search doesn't have to end there. Don't forget to visit specialty shops, gift stores, stationers, kitchen centres, hobby shops, hardware stores, museum gift shops, sewing centres, Scout and Guide shops, costumers, record stores, sports stores and art shops. Be on the look-out for gifts and neat stuff all year round, and keep a cache of interesting items on hand for little gifts to brighten a dreary day or to form part of a major birthday or Christmas present. Combine a number of small items in an inexpensive tote bag, basket or cardboard box. Remember that children love all kinds of boxes and containers, and look for one that suits the character of the gift: a tackle box for a fishing set, a plastic food saver for a set of baking items, a multi-drawer plastic case for a craft set or back-to-school present, a plastic attache case for any kind of collection.

NSW government schools dominate Darwin Practice Firms trade fair
Lucky students from 10 NSW school practice firms recently had a brilliant time taking part in the Darwin Practice FirmsTrade Fair. Students threw themselves energetically into the competitive trading, not to mention the added social activities in our hospitable tropical northern city. The Australian Network of Practice Firms (ANPF) is a group of student companies which trade in virtual (imaginary) goods and services. Trading takes place within the group and with similar groups overseas. This allows students taking VET courses such as Business Services and IT to work in surroundings very like a real workplace. At trade fairs, the challenge for the students is to sell their company's goods and services as vigorously as possible to the public - in order to win awards. Motivational talk. Students and teachers appreciated the "pep talk" at the beginning of the second day, from David Southwick, the Board Chairperson of the Australian Network of Practice Firms. David is a young person who has been highly successful in a number of enterprises.. He strongly believes that businesses should give a share of their profits back to the community - and he practises what he preaches.

MAKING SAFER SCHOOLS When crime, drugs, and violence spill over from the streets into the schools, providing a safe learning environment becomes increasingly difficult. More students carry weapons for protection. Gunfights replace fistfights. Many students must travel through gang turf or groups of drug dealers. Violence becomes an acceptable way to settle conflicts When this happens, children cannot learn and teachers cannot teach. Creating a safe place where children can learn and grow depends on a partnership among students, parents, teachers, and other community institutions to prevent school violence.
  • Find out how crime threatens schools in your community.
  • Take actions to protect children.
  • Promote nonviolent ways to manage conflict.

Open House Draws Large Crowd It was great to see so many people at Open House. We had moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, aunts and uncles, and a whole cast of individuals interested in the welfare of students. We saw lots of new faces (we have nearly 50 new students this year as well as all of our kindergarten children.) But perhaps the most rewarding visits were with families who have been sending children to Southwood Elementary for years. No matter how many years you have been associated with the school or how many children you have put through the school, you came back one more time. The temptation to stay home on a Wednesday evening was probably pretty great, but you came anyway because you know that your involvement with your child is the number one key to the child's success. Bless you, and please keep coming! One mother came up with a creative fund raising idea: sell parking places for Open House!
